Greatest Pittsburgh Panthers Players of All Time
The greatest NON Heisman Trophy Winner from the Panthers, and easily THE greatest quarterback that the Panthers ever had. Marino had a great fortune of playing in the GREATEST Pittsburgh Panther team of all time. 1979 was a super year for the Panthers, even better than the 1976 National Championship team. Reasons. An 11-1 year, featured a perfect 3-0 mark against ranked teams and for Marino, all he did was set a freshman record for passing 1,680 yards, and the best years we're ahead of him, not just for the Panthers, but the road ahead to the NFL and then to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In the late 1970s, quarterbacks had to say their prayers because facing against the Panthers defense was Linebacker Hugh Green. In his 4-year stay, he was a part of many great teams including the 1979 campaign which some college football experts call it the best Panthers team of all time, even better than their 1976 championship. For Hugh, all he did was sacked 53 quarterbacks, made 277 tackles, and produced lots of hits. In 1980, he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated for the College football Preview issue. He won the Walter Camp Award, The Maxwell Award, The Lombardi Award and The Sporting News College football player of the year. All great for Hugh.

Before he helped the Redskins reached Super Bowl Championship heaven, he played a key role in what some college football writers called the 1980 Pittsburgh Panthers a better team than the 1976 National Championship team and May played a big part of that success. That year he did NOT allow a quarterback sack and was nicknamed "may day" for wreaking havoc on opposing defensive ends and at the end of the season he won the Outland Trophy. May then played in the Hula Bowl and the Japan Bowl, his number 73 jersey was retired by the Panthers.

Before his championship years with the now Former Redskins and his Pro Football Hall of Fame career, Grimm was a talented offensive line man for the Panthers. He was on those Great Panthers teams including that great 1979 team I already told you that before. But for Grimm, it's business as usual. It was him that helped Dan Marino find the time to hit wide receivers and paving his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame too. He later joined Jimbo Covert and Mark May to form a great offensive line for the Panthers that went 22-2 when Grimm was on that team.
