Pokemon consists of many creatures that are not only based on real animals, but are also have been inspired by multiple mythologies, especially Japanese, Greek, and Roman, and other cultures of mythology. Here, we will be covering the top ten pokemon that are based by Greek Mythology on this list.

1 Empoleon Empoleon, known in Japan as Emperte, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Empoleon is obviously water-type, has a trident-shaped beak that points above the top of his head, and its name has... similar relations. You've guessed it. The three of these mentioned share similar traits to the Greek God "Poseidon".

2 Dusclops

Dusclops has one eye, and additionally, its name shares similar traits to the word "cyclops" (one-eyed creatures based on Greek and Roman Mythology). So it obviously has been inspired by that mythological creature.

3 Dialga Dialga, known in Japan as the same name, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Shares similar traits based on the Greek God "Chronos" hence its ability to control time.

4 Aegislash Aegislash is a fictional creature in the Pokemon Franchise. Introduced in Gen 6, it is a Steel/Ghost Pokemon. It is the evolved form of Doublade, and the final evolve form of Honedge. Classified as the Royal Sword Pokemon, it is said to detect innate qualities of leadership. According to legend, anyone who is recognizes as a royal leader by Aegislash is destinied to become king. Its signature moves, King's Shield, protects it from attacks, as well as halving the attack stat of a Pokemon that comes into physical contact when the move was used.

The name "aegis" refers to the shield carried by Zeus (mostly) and Athena. So "Aegis" representing shield, and "Slash" representing sword hence its design.

5 Celebi Celebi, known in Japan as the same name, is a Mythical Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.
6 Tauros Tauros, known in Japan as Kentauros, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

The pokemon name "Tauros" is obviously derived from "bull", both from the Latin and Greek language, while its Japanese name "Kentauros" may also be derived from the word "centaur" (mythological creature) and or "centaurus" (the constellation taking shape of the form centaur).

7 Houndoom

While Houndoom shares similar "satanic" traits, it may have possibly been inspired by the Greek mythological creature "Cerberus" and hellhounds, although Houndoom doesn't have three heads at all.

8 Victini Victini, known in Japan as the same name, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Because the Pokedex says Victini would always win, it may have been based on the Greek God "Nike", who is the goddess of victory. The wings on its back may also share a reference to Nike's wings.

9 Heracross Heracross, known in Japan as Heracros, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

While it's obviously based on the Hercules beetle, its name is also a reference to the Greek hero "Heracles", who was the son of Zeus. Not to mention, Heracles can also lift up things hundred(s) heavier than his weight, just like Heracross.

10 Tangela

Apparently, Tangela had a previous name called "Meduza" back on the beta stage. Judging by its parasitic-like design, it is definitely inspired by the one of the three Gorgons, and that being "Medusa".

Its name is obviously based on the Greek God of sleep "Hypnos". Like Hypnos, Hypno is also able to hypnotize people to sleep.
