Best Pokemon Competitively

The Top Ten
1 Mega Rayquaza

This Pokémon has a base stat total of 780, which is tied for the highest. Along with this, it’s the only mega Pokémon that can hold an item, giving it additional power. Its ability Delta Stream removes effects of the weather, while also lessening its weakness to Ice, and removing its weakness to Rock. It is also now resistant to Electric. Its 180 base attacking stats also make it the best competitive Pokémon. It’s so broken, a whole tier (Anything Goes) was created to ban it from Ubers.

2 Gengar

When it mega evolves, it gets the amazing ability Shadow Tag. Combine this with Hypnosis, the opponent is asleep and cannot escape, allowing you to set up or knock out the Pokemon with Hex, which now has a base power of 130, since the opponent is asleep. Having an amazing 170 base Special Attack and 130 speed also helps.

3 Zygarde Zygarde, known in Japan as the same name, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Zygarde is definitely the best physical wall in the game. Having a monstrous base 216 HP and 121 Defense (after it has 50% HP remaining), this Pokemon can wall any physical attack. Its 100 base Attack also lets it dish out attacks, with Thousand Arrows, a ground type move that hits Flying types. This Pokemon has many sets, with a Rest/Talk set, with Coil and Glare also as viable options.

4 Groudon Groudon, known in Japan as the same name, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

This Pokemon’s primal form gives it a base stat total of 770. This is tied for the 3rd highest in the game. Combine that with 180 base attack, this monster can crush anything. What really makes this Pokemon powerful is its unpredictability. 160 base defense allows it to set up, and with its Desolate Land ability, water type attacks do nothing. It can also sweep, with Rock Polish to boost its speed. It’s an amazing Pokemon.

5 Necrozma

You start it off with its Dusk Mane form. What happens from there? Your opponent has no clue. Will it use a Rock Polish and Swords Dance to sweep with 157 base attack? Will it Ultra Burst into Ultra Necrozma, a beast with a base stat total of 754, attacking stats of 167, a Speed stat of 129, with moves like Photon Geyser, Dragon Pulse, and Heat Wave, to demolish your team? It even changes types through this. What type attack should I use? A fire type? He starts steel, which is super effective, but if he changes into a dragon upon Ultra Bursting, he resists it. It’s unpredictable.

6 Arceus Arceus is a legendary Pokémon from the Pokémon series. It first appeared in the 18th Pokémon movie alongside other Legendary Pokémon. In the Pokémon universe, Arceus is widely known as "The Original One", as it's believed to be the creator of the entire pokemon universe. According to mythology, Arceus is said to emerge from an egg that existed before the universe.

Ah, Arceus, the God of Pokemon. Its ability to have any different type makes it unbelieveable. You don’t even have to switch its type. As a normal type, you can set up a Swords Dance then Extreme Speed everything. It helps that its stats are all 120, for a total of 720. You could have it be a fairy type, and set up. Or you could use its dark type Calm Mind set. Its water type is a good defensive Pokemon. It’s very versatile and can be used in any role. It has a great move in Judgement, which changes types based on the type of Arceus you use. It also gets a boost from the plate it uses, which boosts moves of its type by 20%. It truly is the God of Pokemon.

7 Ho-Oh Ho-Oh, known in Japan as Houou, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Ho-Oh can be used as a wall or an attacker, both are very effective. If you use it to wall, its 154 base Special Defense will definitely help. It also has a decent 90 Defense. Pair this with the ability Regenerator and Roost or Recover, this thing is hard to take out. It also is a great attacker, with Sacred Fire, having 100 base power and a 50% burn rate. Brave Bird is also great, and with its recovery moves, it can sweep.

8 Marshadow Marshadow is a Fighting/Ghost-type Mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation VII. It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Ghost and Fighting. These types paired together, no Pokemon resists it. It also has 125 base Attack and Speed, so it will almost always get a big hit off. Give it a Sash, it always gets 2 hits off, which almost always KOs its opponents. If a Pokemon outspeeds, there’s always Shadow Sneak. Want to set up? Too bad. With Spectral Thief, this Pokemon steals your stat boosts. And after recieving those boosts, it attacks, with 90 base power. Its Sash makes sure it always steals that boost. Once it gets the boosts, the game is pretty much over.

Classified as the Life Pokemon, Xerneas has the ability to give eternal life, which occurs when the horns on its head shine in seven lights. When its life comes to an end, it releases all of its life energy to every living thing nearby before transforming into a tree to sleep for 1,000 years. Its signature move, Geomancy, takes a turn to charge, but raises its Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. A popular moveset is a Geomancy set with Power Herb as the holding item.

Three words. Geomancy Power Herb. Why does this matter? Geomancy doubles your Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed, but it takes 2 turns. Power Herb? It makes it one turn. And once that’s set up, Moonblast, Psychic/Psyshock, Focus Blast. It’s nearly unstoppable with 131 base Special Attack.

This thing does huge damage while healing. How? Oblivion Wing. This heals half of the damage it does. Pair it with Dark Pulse, its ability Dark Aura, and moves like Psychic, Focus Blast, Shadow Ball, and give it Choice Specs, this thing is hard to stop. If you want, make it defensive. Give it Taunt. You can stops setups like Xerneas which would normally crush you. Its dark type lets it come in on Necrozma and force a switch.

The Contenders
11 Mimikyu Mimikyu is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. It is a Ghost and Fairy type whose ability, disguise, allows it to take one hit without taking damage
12 Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn is one of the best defensive Pokemon in the game. With its Steel/Grass typing, it’s immune to Toxic, Leech Seed, and the spore moves. It has 131 base Defense and 116 base Sp. Defense, with 74 base HP. With 9 resistances and an immunity, along with only 2 weaknesses, this Pokemon is hard to defeat. Give it a Rocky Helmet with its ability Iron Barbs and every move that makes contact returns huge damage. Leech Seed and Protect will work on it, and giving it Gyro Ball with its base speed of 20 can do massive damage. It’s also a very reliable setup Pokemon.

13 Kyogre Kyogre, known in Japan as the same name, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

This Pokémon is the counterpart to Groudon, so it also has a huge base stat total of 770. Primordial Sea, its ability, makes Thunder never miss, and it can take out Groudon’s Desolate Land, allowing it to demolish Groudon with a 4x effective 180 base Special Attack water move, like Origin Pulse or Water Spout.

14 Dialga Dialga, known in Japan as the same name, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Steel and Dragon are both great types. Couple it with 150 base Sp. Attack, this thing is amazing. Its typing also helps it play a great defensive role. Both are great on it.

15 Celesteela Celesteela is a dual-type Steel/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation VII. It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon. It is one of the Ultra Beasts and is known by the code name UB-04 Blaster.

This Pokémon is mostly used as a Leech Seeder, and it does that extremely well. It has monstrous defenses and access to moves like Flamethrower to take out Grass threats and Heavy Slam to speed up the opponent’s slow death. This mon is also immune to Toxic.

16 Gothitelle

Who would have guessed that Gothitelle nearly was banned to Anything Goes with Rayquaza? Well, this thing can completely demolish the other team, by PP stalling, a slow yet effective way to win. Shadow Tag is what makes this possible. With Shadow Tag, the opponent can’t switch out, which allows this Pokémon to freely Confide and Charm the opponent, both of which have high PP to effectively stall. Taunt assures that it won’t be Whirlwinded and Rest rids Toxic and stops Gothitelle from wasting more PP. Once the opponent starts to struggle, you can switch out to a boosting Pokémon and have a free turn to setup and sweep.

17 Sableye

With only one weakness to Fairy and 2 immunities, Magic Bounce which prevents moves like Toxic or Taunt, and huge defenses, this Pokémon is a very annoying wall to face. Once it gets up a few Calm Minds, it’s too hard to take it down with the one weakness to Fairy and it can also now demolish you. A very threatening Pokémon.

18 Skarmory Skarmory, known in Japan as Airmd, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.
19 Smeargle

While it has horrible stats, access to any move can really make up for it. Just give it a Sash and the move Spore and it’s free to set up moves like Minimize and Baton Pass to make other threatening mons even more scary.

20 Chansey Chansey, known in Japan as Lucky, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Yes, it has an evolved form. No, this doesn’t make it worse than its evolved form.
With unbelievable 250 base HP, this thing is very tanky. Give it an Eviolite to help its huge 105 base Sp. Defense. You can not and will not take it down with a special attack. If you even got close, it will just Soft-Boiled right back up to full HP. It also has Toxic and Seismic Toss to slowly destroy other Pokémon. Some sets even run Minimize. How annoying would that be?

21 Deoxys Deoxys, known in Japan as the same name, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.

Deoxys has different forms- Speed, with the highest speed in the game, Attack, with two 180 attacking stats and great 150 speed, Defense, with 160 Defenses, and its normal form.
Speed is a great setup mon. With access to rocks, huge speed, and solid defensive stats, it’s nearly guarunteed to get off rocks.
Attack has huge offensive stats and speed but abysmal defenses. It nearly always gets at least one huge hit off, and give it a sash, it should take out any Pokémon 1 on 1, unless it has priority. Even then, Doexys gets Extreme Speed.
Defense is a very bulky Pokémon that can set up or act as a wall. Both are somewhat outclassed but still effective.

22 Giratina Giratina is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. Created by Ken Sugimori, Giratina first appeared in the video games Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, but gained prominence in the sister game, Pokémon Platinum, which it was made the mascot of.

It has 2 forms- Origin, the attacker, and Altered, the bulky mon. Both are good.
Both have 150 base HP which is great. They have 120s in their better stats (ATK/SPA or DEF/SPD) and 100 in the other. Ghost/Dragon type is also amazing. Its Altered form is very bulky and its Origin form is a great attacker yet still bulky. Both are great in competitive.

23 Lugia Lugia, known in Japan as ルギア (Rugia), is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. First introduced in Generation II, it's the mascot of the game Pokémon Silver. It serves as the master of the legendary birds trio, and is part of the tower tuo along with Ho-Oh.

Lugia is undoubtedly the best all-around wall in the game thanks to the ability Multiscale. This halves any damage taken while Lugia is at full health. It already had great defensive stats, with a 154 base Sp. Defense and 130 Defense with 106 base HP. Roost lets it stay at full HP. This thing is near impossible to take in 1 hit. It also has Toxic to whittle down the opponent’s HP, Ice Beam to help, and Whirlwind to get rid of boosting Pokémon. It’s very annoying to face.

24 Lunala Lunala, known in Japan as the same name, is a Legendary Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.
25 Magearna

Steel/Fairy is arguably the best type in the game. It also has the ability Soul-Heart, which is a special counterpart to Moxie. Fleur Cannon also is a great move. This Pokémon also has moves that can stop boosting Pokémon by stealing those boosts, allowing it to stop a sweep and then make one of its own.
