Pacifism: the belief that any violence, including war, is unjustifiable under any circumstances, and that all disputes should be settled by peaceful means.

In a perfect world, there are always alternatives to violence. But sometimes those are cut off. Reasoning and compromise didn't help the people of Poland or millions of European Jews (not to mention blacks, homosexuals, and other non-Aryan minorities). Had Great Britain and her allies not declared war on Nazi Germany, the world would be a very different place.
