41 Tesseract Tesseract

Tesseract at 46? You gotta be kidding me. These guys are awesome. Should be in the top 20 at least

Listen to Concealing Fate and you will see why TesseracT deserve to be top 10

A fantastic band with some beautifully haunting tracks and fantastic vocals

Every single sound they produce,be it on instruments or vocal chord,is dark chocolate for ears.

42 Redemption X

If you listen "Snowfall on Judgement Day" and "Redemption - The Origins Of Ruin 2007 Progressive" albums, you will place they top 10...

Not: vocal is fates warnings' vocal

It has the singer from fates Warning but in my opinion this band is way better; just listen to the album the Fullness of Time - germshep24

Redemption deserves much more

43 Persefone Persefone Persefone is an Andorran progressive death metal band formed in October 2001. The band's name is derived from Persephone, a figure in Greek Mythology.

Masterful, technical, powerful, beautiful, inspiring - Persefone is one of my favorite bands. I can't believe they're not more well known.

Not popular, but definitely worth a try! - Flav

Great sound and power!

Check out their album Spritual Migration

44 Shadow Gallery

They are my favourite band! Greatest prog band ever!

Shadow Gallery is a completely underrated band.

They made a clichéd story about the New World Order cool - and somehow stretched it into two great albums, without having a single moment that felt overlong until the very end.

45 Beyond Twilight Beyond Twilight
46 Obscura Obscura Obscura is a German technical death metal band from Landshut, Germany, founded in 2002. The band became prominent when members of Necrophagist and Pestilence joined Steffen Kummerer to release the critically acclaimed second full-length album, Cosmogenesis. The band was named after the Gorguts album more.
47 Metallica Metallica Metallica is an American Thrash Metal band formed in 1981 . The original lineup was James Hetfield (Vocalist and Rhythm guitarist), Dave Mustaine (Lead Guitar), Lars Ulrich (Drums), Ron McGovney (Bassist). The group came into mainstream from their Self-Titled album and the hit single "Enter Sandman". more.

Metallica is not a progressive metal band. And Justice For All may have had a bit of prog going on but they're primarily thrash.

Because their first 5 thrash albums are not only the best 5 thrash albums in metal history, but they're also the most progressive thrash metal albums in history.

Metallica is thrash metal/ heavy metal/hard rock, not progressive metal - zxm

48 To-Mera

Interesting and unique blend of prog and jazz, with amazing female jazz-style vocals, "Inside the Hourglass" really got me into them! - petrucci75hammet

49 Kamelot Kamelot Kamelot is an American power metal band from Tampa, Florida, formed by Thomas Youngblood and Richard Warner in 1991. The Norwegian vocalist Roy Khan joined for the album Siége Perilous, and shared songwriting credit with Youngblood until his departure in April 2011. On June 22, 2012, Youngblood announced more.

Roy is simply one of the best vocalists out there today. Dude used to be a legitimate opera singer, and I'd say that adds serious dimension to Kamelot as a metal band. Their songs are also nicely layered, often in an orchestral way. Highly underrated

Roy Khan was an awesome singer in his day, but I have to say when they replaced him with Tommy Karevik (Of Seventh Wonder), they made the perfect choice. He's even better than Roy ever was and the band seems to be doing their thing better than ever.

It saddened my heart to see Kamelot as #36 on the list. This band was easily in my top 3 back in the Roy Khan days, and still in my top 5 with Tommy Karevik.

Tommy Karevik in both Seventh Wonder and Kamelot has a unique voice in both, the bands are like the best ever!

The discovery is an incredible album

51 Iron Maiden Iron Maiden Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. The most critically acclaimed period for the band was from 1983-1989. With vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris, lead guitarist Dave Murray, rhythm guitarist Adrian more.

First of all you not separate between heavy metal and hard rock genre! There is no Rush, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and many more great progressive rock giant in this list because they were not a metal contender in progressive metal. But some silly person put some band from prog rock in this list like Transatlantic etc. Iron Maiden is a heavy metal band, yes they have some influenced in progressive progression but the whole musical direction was not a progressive metal at all! Influenced by progressive music doesn't mean you are apart of it's!

They are not progressive Metal? "Book of Souls" with three songs longer than 10 minutes, "A Matter Of Life And Death" and "The Final Frontier" with their many epics. I think it is prog metal. - DarkSideOfDragons

Best metal band but they are a heavy metal band, not progressive metal. - zxm

52 Coheed and Cambria Coheed and Cambria Coheed and Cambria is an American progressive rock band from Nyack, New York, formed in 1995. The band consists of Claudio Sanchez, Travis Stever, Josh Eppard, and Zach Cooper.

Brilliant song writing skills. Catchy, maybe not as heavy but, definitely one of the best acts in existence.

They should be at least top ten. Come on. Just take a listen.

One of my greatest guitar influences is coheed

I don't think they were playing metal music or prog metal sound. Yes they are among of the best but they should listed in the best prog rock band ever!

55 Voivod Voivod Voivod is a Canadian heavy metal band from Jonquière, Québec. Their musical style has changed several times since the band's origin in the early 1980s.

Wow. Not even in the top 10? Disgrace. Any fan of Progressive Metal that has never heard Voivod needs to rethink Progressive Metal entirely. Porcupine Tree is number 8 and they're NOT EVEN METAL.

Voivod is Yes meets Exodus meets Pink Floyd meets Rush meets Motorhead meets Genesis meets Kreator on bath salts; and I'm not talking about the kind your Mom uses.

Voivod has more balls than any of these guys, with the exception of Rush. Too many lame-ass boo bands being labeled as progressive.

There's no speck of doubt this band belongs in the top 5.

56 Baroness Baroness Baroness is an American heavy metal band from Savannah, Georgia whose original members grew up together in Lexington, Virginia.

Very underrated band, not sure why... Nowadays, even Masto-eff-don tries to be like them. Listen to Yellow & Green, I'm ABSOLUTELY SURE you won't regret it.

58 Agalloch Agalloch
59 Angra

A very technical power metal band with progressive
... They has one of the best dual guitarists in metal, their skills and technique are just the same level as Dream Theater, Symphony x etc... Maybe better

Love this band. Rafa is cute.

60 Katatonia Katatonia Katatonia is a Swedish metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band has released nine studio albums spanning the course of three decades, and their tenth studio album, The Fall of Hearts was released on May 20, 2016.

Katatonia is not the death/doom metal band they were in the 90's. I can't describe them currently as progressive metal OR progressive rock, they seem to exist in a genre all their own. Still, Night is the New Day, Great Cold Distance and Dead End Kings are some of my all-time favorite albums, they are beautifully dark, and have a clean, refined sound. I love the harmonized vocals, haunting guitar riffs and technical drumming.

From Sweden and successfully sharing headliners with Opeth and sharing members on the fantastic side project Bloodbath. Another death metal band worth to try.

Katatonia might be recently exploring the progressive side of metal, but is a serious contender thou.

Not so much in their earlier offerings but everything from viva emptiness on makes these guys one of the top contenders for the prog metal hall of fame. I'm always anxiously awaiting their next release

One of the best post-metal bands of all times!
