41 To-Mera

Interesting and unique blend of prog and jazz, with amazing female jazz-style vocals, "Inside the Hourglass" really got me into them! - petrucci75hammet

42 Kamelot Kamelot Kamelot is an American power metal band from Tampa, Florida, formed by Thomas Youngblood and Richard Warner in 1991. The Norwegian vocalist Roy Khan joined for the album Siége Perilous, and shared songwriting credit with Youngblood until his departure in April 2011. On June 22, 2012, Youngblood announced more.

Roy is simply one of the best vocalists out there today. Dude used to be a legitimate opera singer, and I'd say that adds serious dimension to Kamelot as a metal band. Their songs are also nicely layered, often in an orchestral way. Highly underrated

Roy Khan was an awesome singer in his day, but I have to say when they replaced him with Tommy Karevik (Of Seventh Wonder), they made the perfect choice. He's even better than Roy ever was and the band seems to be doing their thing better than ever.

It saddened my heart to see Kamelot as #36 on the list. This band was easily in my top 3 back in the Roy Khan days, and still in my top 5 with Tommy Karevik.

The discovery is an incredible album

44 Iron Maiden Iron Maiden Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. The most critically acclaimed period for the band was from 1983-1989. With vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris, lead guitarist Dave Murray, rhythm guitarist Adrian more.

First of all you not separate between heavy metal and hard rock genre! There is no Rush, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and many more great progressive rock giant in this list because they were not a metal contender in progressive metal. But some silly person put some band from prog rock in this list like Transatlantic etc. Iron Maiden is a heavy metal band, yes they have some influenced in progressive progression but the whole musical direction was not a progressive metal at all! Influenced by progressive music doesn't mean you are apart of it's!

They are not progressive Metal? "Book of Souls" with three songs longer than 10 minutes, "A Matter Of Life And Death" and "The Final Frontier" with their many epics. I think it is prog metal. - DarkSideOfDragons

Best metal band but they are a heavy metal band, not progressive metal. - zxm

45 Coheed and Cambria Coheed and Cambria Coheed and Cambria is an American progressive rock band from Nyack, New York, formed in 1995. The band consists of Claudio Sanchez, Travis Stever, Josh Eppard, and Zach Cooper.

Brilliant song writing skills. Catchy, maybe not as heavy but, definitely one of the best acts in existence.

They should be at least top ten. Come on. Just take a listen.

One of my greatest guitar influences is coheed

46 Lost Horizon
47 Pagan's Mind

These guys are right near the top of the list for me. They're like a heavier version of Queensryche with better songs. Nils is hands down my favorite vocalist in this genre.

"Enigmatic Call and Celestial Entrance are two of the best most impressive prig-metal albums ever recorded.

Top ten in my opinion. Sounds a bit like DT but I like the sound of PG better!

48 Transatlantic

I don't think they were playing metal music or prog metal sound. Yes they are among of the best but they should listed in the best prog rock band ever!

Masterful, technical, powerful, beautiful, inspiring - Persefone is one of my favorite bands. I can't believe they're not more well known.

Not popular, but definitely worth a try! - Flav

53 Angra

A very technical power metal band with progressive

56 Shadow Gallery

They are my favourite band! Greatest prog band ever!

Shadow Gallery is a completely underrated band.

They made a clichéd story about the New World Order cool - and somehow stretched it into two great albums, without having a single moment that felt overlong until the very end.

57 Neurosis Neurosis Neurosis is a post-metal band, based in Oakland, California. They formed in 1985 as a hardcore punk band, and their sound progressed towards a doom metal style that also included influences from dark ambient and industrial music as well as incorporating elements of folk music.

They are more Post Metal, but everything from

58 Protest the Hero

Why has nobody heard of these guys? They're so damn good, and yet nobody listens to them?! They have some of the most talented metal guitarists around, and all of their stuff is mental. The vocals are just incredible, and wow, the bassist is so cool. And to lock all that in, the drummer has some serious skill.

Would easily be top 10 if people even knew about them, don't know if they're really big anywhere outside of Canada. Great band, don't dislike one song. I put them up there with Periphery even higher. Should NOT be at 58 by any means. If you haven't heard of these guys, do your self a favour and look them up!

Deserves a higher spot, a highly underrated and looked over band. Really great stuff and amazing musicianship. Should be up there with Tool, Dillinger Escape Plan, Dream Theater, Etc..

Tragically underrated. PTH is like the swan song of the world's appreciation of actual talent. Fortress remains one of the best albums I've ever heard, and the others are damn close.

60 King's X

Probably one of the most unique and cohesive sounding rock bands of the past 30 years. These guys are so tight, heavy, but melodic at the same time.
