41 Kamelot Kamelot Kamelot is an American power metal band from Tampa, Florida, formed by Thomas Youngblood and Richard Warner in 1991. The Norwegian vocalist Roy Khan joined for the album Siége Perilous, and shared songwriting credit with Youngblood until his departure in April 2011. On June 22, 2012, Youngblood announced more.

Roy is simply one of the best vocalists out there today. Dude used to be a legitimate opera singer, and I'd say that adds serious dimension to Kamelot as a metal band. Their songs are also nicely layered, often in an orchestral way. Highly underrated

Roy Khan was an awesome singer in his day, but I have to say when they replaced him with Tommy Karevik (Of Seventh Wonder), they made the perfect choice. He's even better than Roy ever was and the band seems to be doing their thing better than ever.

It saddened my heart to see Kamelot as #36 on the list. This band was easily in my top 3 back in the Roy Khan days, and still in my top 5 with Tommy Karevik.

The discovery is an incredible album

43 Iron Maiden Iron Maiden Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. They were known for some big hits such as The Trooper, and The Number of the Beast, and have released 16 studio albums . The New Wave of British Heavy Metal Pioneers would more.

First of all you not separate between heavy metal and hard rock genre! There is no Rush, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and many more great progressive rock giant in this list because they were not a metal contender in progressive metal. But some silly person put some band from prog rock in this list like Transatlantic etc. Iron Maiden is a heavy metal band, yes they have some influenced in progressive progression but the whole musical direction was not a progressive metal at all! Influenced by progressive music doesn't mean you are apart of it's!

They are not progressive Metal? "Book of Souls" with three songs longer than 10 minutes, "A Matter Of Life And Death" and "The Final Frontier" with their many epics. I think it is prog metal. - DarkSideOfDragons

Best metal band but they are a heavy metal band, not progressive metal. - zxm

44 Savatage Savatage Savatage is an American heavy metal band founded by the brothers Jon and Criss Oliva in 1978 at Astro Skate in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

Albums like "Gutter Ballet" and "Edge of Thorns" are progressive metal at its finest. -

This is the best band ever. So much better than the crap of dream theater!

Absolutely classic! I can't believe a band that has left such a legacy is so underrated and unrecognized.

Best Band ever, they were the gods of Heavy metal.your list lacks in inspirational enlistment.go and listen to savatage and then make another list.

45 Coheed and Cambria Coheed and Cambria Coheed and Cambria is an American progressive rock band from Nyack, New York, formed in 1995. The band consists of Claudio Sanchez, Travis Stever, Josh Eppard, and Zach Cooper.

Brilliant song writing skills. Catchy, maybe not as heavy but, definitely one of the best acts in existence.

They should be at least top ten. Come on. Just take a listen.

One of my greatest guitar influences is coheed

46 Lost Horizon
47 Pagan's Mind

These guys are right near the top of the list for me. They're like a heavier version of Queensryche with better songs. Nils is hands down my favorite vocalist in this genre.

"Enigmatic Call and Celestial Entrance are two of the best most impressive prig-metal albums ever recorded.

Top ten in my opinion. Sounds a bit like DT but I like the sound of PG better!

48 Transatlantic

I don't think they were playing metal music or prog metal sound. Yes they are among of the best but they should listed in the best prog rock band ever!

49 Persefone Persefone Persefone is an Andorran progressive death metal band formed in October 2001. The band's name is derived from Persephone, a figure in Greek Mythology.

Masterful, technical, powerful, beautiful, inspiring - Persefone is one of my favorite bands. I can't believe they're not more well known.

A very technical power metal band with progressive
... They has one of the best dual guitarists in metal, their skills and technique are just the same level as Dream Theater, Symphony x etc... Maybe better

Love this band. Rafa is cute.

53 Shadow Gallery

They are my favourite band! Greatest prog band ever!

Shadow Gallery is a completely underrated band.

They made a clichéd story about the New World Order cool - and somehow stretched it into two great albums, without having a single moment that felt overlong until the very end.

54 Neurosis Neurosis Neurosis is a post-metal band, based in Oakland, California. They formed in 1985 as a hardcore punk band, and their sound progressed towards a doom metal style that also included influences from dark ambient and industrial music as well as incorporating elements of folk music.

They are more Post Metal, but everything from

55 Crimson Glory Crimson Glory Crimson Glory is an American progressive metal band that formed in 1979 under the name Pierced Arrow.

Crimson Glory's first two albums are the two albums ALL Progressive Metal bands claim to have been inspired by. Period.

Midnight is The greatest vocalist period.

The originator with one of the most amazing haunting voices ever.

Most underrated band in metal history. - Caleb9000

56 Protest the Hero

Why has nobody heard of these guys? They're so damn good, and yet nobody listens to them?! They have some of the most talented metal guitarists around, and all of their stuff is mental. The vocals are just incredible, and wow, the bassist is so cool. And to lock all that in, the drummer has some serious skill.

Would easily be top 10 if people even knew about them, don't know if they're really big anywhere outside of Canada. Great band, don't dislike one song. I put them up there with Periphery even higher. Should NOT be at 58 by any means. If you haven't heard of these guys, do your self a favour and look them up!

Deserves a higher spot, a highly underrated and looked over band. Really great stuff and amazing musicianship. Should be up there with Tool, Dillinger Escape Plan, Dream Theater, Etc..

Tragically underrated. PTH is like the swan song of the world's appreciation of actual talent. Fortress remains one of the best albums I've ever heard, and the others are damn close.

57 King's X

Probably one of the most unique and cohesive sounding rock bands of the past 30 years. These guys are so tight, heavy, but melodic at the same time.

59 Vanden Plas

Vanden Plas is the best prog metal band in the West

Vanden plas is number one listen to their last album chronicles of the immortals à master peas

60 Katatonia Katatonia Katatonia is a Swedish metal band formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band has released nine studio albums spanning the course of three decades, and their tenth studio album, The Fall of Hearts was released on May 20, 2016.

Katatonia is not the death/doom metal band they were in the 90's. I can't describe them currently as progressive metal OR progressive rock, they seem to exist in a genre all their own. Still, Night is the New Day, Great Cold Distance and Dead End Kings are some of my all-time favorite albums, they are beautifully dark, and have a clean, refined sound. I love the harmonized vocals, haunting guitar riffs and technical drumming.

From Sweden and successfully sharing headliners with Opeth and sharing members on the fantastic side project Bloodbath. Another death metal band worth to try.

Katatonia might be recently exploring the progressive side of metal, but is a serious contender thou.

Not so much in their earlier offerings but everything from viva emptiness on makes these guys one of the top contenders for the prog metal hall of fame. I'm always anxiously awaiting their next release

One of the best post-metal bands of all times!
