Top 10 Proofs that Cave Story is a Ridiculously Overrated Game Even by Indie Standards

The Top Ten
1 Due to blind nostalgic fanboyism, it's pretty much officially become the Ocarina Of Time of the indie-game movement; good game, but people often forget how incredibly far the movement has come since its 2004 release
2 It's considered to have one of the best storylines in gaming, despite one of the most embarrassingly cliched good-versus-evil scenarios you could possibly think of for a non-NES game
3 It's cloyingly pretentious and ham-fisted with its moral themes, to a much greater degree than Undertale ever was even in the Genocide Run
4 Its soundtrack is pretty fantastic indeed but not even on the level of Shovel Knight's, let alone Super Meat Boy's or especially Undertale's
5 Axiom Verge is a vastly-superior-in-almost-every-single-way experience in the exact same genre and no one ever even thinks to talk about that game
6 It's still credited to this day as being the most important game in the modern "indie masterpiece" movement, despite being probably the least innovative of them
7 Other indie games like Shovel Knight and Undertale get picked on for paying genuine tribute to classic gaming franchises, while Cave Story shamelessly rips not one but TWO of them off at the exact same time and gets away scot-free with it
8 It's a really good game for a free download, but even $10 on WiiWare was honestly quite a bit of a stretch for what it was really worth, let alone a whopping $40 on 3DS
9 People complain about other indie games having the overused faux-retro look, but never Cave Story, which was actually the game that popularized the massively overrated trend in the first place

I'm only voting this to say how stupid this is, the game had began development in 1999, when pixelated games were starting to close

10 The fanbase for it wasn't a good one at all, it was just a lot smaller than the ones that most indie games have nowadays
The Contenders
11 Seriously, it's NOT the cutest game ever made; Undertale, Klonoa, the Kirby series and several of the Yoshi games already took that title a long time ago
12 It's often considered to be as sad and depressing (not to mention emotionally deep and impactful) of a game as the likes of Mother 3 and Undertale

I am again voting on this to say that cave story IS actually as saddening as undertale, and far more then super metroid, the sad part in super metroid is a floating thing that sucks your brains out (the baby metroid) dies to save you, I didn't feel too sad because he had NO character devolepment in the slightest, and don't even get me STARTED on undertale

13 There is literally no way to skip the cutscenes, despite this game being released all the way into the mid-2000s

In it's defense, it was being developed in 1999

14 Seriously, it's a very big part of the reason why Five Nights At Freddy's exists

And this is bad why?

15 Let's be honest; most of its successors (yes, including Undertale) were just overall way better games in general

Undertale, better, and cave story, in that order should not be in the same sentence

16 It actually has an entire subreddit (and a pretty darned big one at that) dedicated solely to it on Reddit

EVERYTHING has a Sub Reddit nowadays.

Yeah, and so this undertale and durrplant but we don't complain about that, now do we?

17 Honestly, a lot of the other famous games from the indie movement probably would have still existed just fine without this game ever interfering

With the exception for undertale, Radiation has said that Cave Story was a major inspiration for Undertale

18 It's been ported onto almost every single system in existence; in fact, there was even an attempt to port it onto calculators at one point
19 Video games have had far cuter characters than the Mimigas; Undertale alone has quite a few examples in its cast
20 People often claim that it's as good as (if not better) than the real Metroid games, even including AM2R and all of the Super Metroid fanhacks
21 It had a fanhack (Jenka's Nightmare) that was both a way better game and also a vastly bigger one than the original...and was also independently developed, obviously
22 The controls are as floaty as can be, and your character jumps as if he's literally on the moon
23 The absolutely ridiculous process that you have to go through in order to successfully save Curly from drowning and get the best ending
24 It was an otherwise ridiculously easy game with atrociously massive difficulty spikes more than a decade before Undertale's Genocide Run made the trend cool
25 The characters are every bit as one-dimensional as can be
