Dead Kennedys are an American hardcore punk band formed in San Francisco, California in 1978. The band was one of the first American hardcore bands to make a significant impact in the United Kingdom.
The Dead Kennedys at 19? Sum 41 at six? Punk is Dead. Go to Hot Topic and buy another studded belt you people are a bunch of tools. If you twits showed up at a Black Flagg show in the late 1980s you would have been sent home beaten black and blue crying for your mommies. While the Ramones a great American band punk is generally considered to have developed in London in the early to mid-1970s which was well before the fools in Sum 41 were born. Sure, Green Day is a good band but anyone who records for a major record label cannot truly be considered punk. PUNK ROCK IS ABOUT DOING IT YOURSELF. THAT INCLUDES THINKING FOR YOUR SELF. Idiots!
The Dead Kennedys are Punk Rock. This generation knows nothing about punk. This list is a joke. When the Dk's are number 14 something is dreadfully wrong. Jello Biafra is an Icon... Behind Chemical Romance give me a break. I was there for the beginning of Punk in New York with the Ramones and CBGBs. The emergence of Punk in Britain with the Pistols... Where the hell are the Exploited, UK Subs, Buzzcocks, Angelic Upstarts... The West Coast Skate Scene? Misfits, Bad Brains what! Avril Lavigne!
Of course they're the best, and despite what happened, Biafra is the philosopher behind Punk. He witnessed the Sex Pistols personally, looked at what was great and not great about them, and built a band that owns every band on this thread. There's no need to apologise for the DK's of today, because this was Biafra's baby, and is the most theatrical, intelligent, idealist, and politically passionate Punk protagonist to have ever graced the planet. He is an inspiring human being, which can't be said of too many on here. He wouldn't care if he was at #7 or #100. The Gold Standard of Punk, straight up.
I could not agree more. No-one on the planet, apart from Maynard James Keenan and handful of deceased others, can compare with Biafra. Dead Kennedys mopped the floor with any anything that lacked ideals and morality and intelligence and integrity, and Biafra is the mastermind behind it all. Whatever happened afterwards had nothing to do with him, but it has allowed me access to a lot more of DK material than I would have been permitted. This guy is integrity personified and just may become Jesus in 1,000-years. How ironic. I'll worship him till I die. Punk personified.
Amazing original hardcore punk at its finest. And what is Green Day, Sum 41, blink182 and Good Charlotte doing in the top 10. I don't even consider that pop punk. It is no better than the stuff you hear on radio Disney. I guess all the goofy fan girls punt them up there. Real pop punk is The Queers, Descendents and The Adicts. Not this pop rock sugar nipples junk.
I'm convinced that some of the bands on this list are not Punk. Not to obsess about labeling. On another note, I'm also not convinced that one can figure out who the best punk band is by way of a vote, given the fundamentally offensive core of Punk. If it doesn't disturb, offend, frighten or agitate you its probably not Punk. I will say this. Dead Kennedys were offensive.
These fellows are pretty much one of the largest and most well known amongst the quality punk bands. Nowadays punk, the majority of it anyways, is pretty much total garbage. I mean, Green Day? Really, why are they on the top? They're pop punk, not hardcore or classic punk. Now bands like the DKs and Crass, along with others are of the quality punk kind, instead of the poser pop punk. The false stuff should be on a different list. Best Pop Punk bands or something like that.
I love Green Day, I really do, it got me into punk and punk rock, but it should NOT be #1, they aren't punks anymore, they sold out :(. Dead Kennedys are amazing, fast-paced, hardcore punk, they changed punk and I'm proud to be a punk. Sum-41, Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, and Good Charlotte ARE NOT punk, Dead Kennedys and The Clash should be sided-by-side #1 and or 2 either way.
They were the political band of the 80's, covering everything from corrupt politicians, police brutality, the worst places on Earth, and how hard MTV sucks. Jello was one of the most intelligent singers ever, and they just kick you in your mouth with words, no comparison. - derek84
Dead Kenney's are one of the staples of punk. Their music was solid, true punk, and Jello Biafra really captured the punk rock lifestyle. That being said, plenty of these bands are fantastic, Bad Religion, NOFX, Black Flag, any of the true punk bands could certainly place number one. The truly disturbing thing about this list is that pop punk bands like Green Day and Bowling for soup are considered, with the former being #1. I'm sure any punk would look at that and say "What the hell?! "
DK changed my life in more ways than one when I first heard them as a teenager and definitely helped shape me into the 30something year old adult I am now. Musically, they stood out from their peers with the great guitar textures, awesome drumming and great bass lines but what really set them apart was their excellent lyrics. Too bad they became a cover version of themselves now without Jello, but at least he's still rocking with his other projects.
When I read the top 10 I think I threw up in my mouth a little.
This is a really tough choice. The Ramones or The Clash could have easily been my number one, depends what day of the week it is.
Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables swings it, my favourite punk album of all time. If you haven't got it, buy it now.
The fact that Green Day is #1 is a joke, not a bad band for what they are but what they are is NOT punk. So many great Punk Bands, DK, Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones, The Slits, The Cramps, Circle Jerks, X, The Germs, Fear, The Meatmen, The Damned, Minor Threat, Misfits Black Flag, White Flag, The Buzzcocks, The Dickies, The Smarties, Agent Orange, X Ray Specs the list goes on a mile. Notice a lot of the crap listed so high up on this list, I didn't list?
Green Day being the best punk rock band? Well in that case punk really is dead... Dead Kennedys, Misfits, The Clash, Ramones and Minor Threat are the definition of punk and hardcore. Today's pop"punk" bands can't even compete with them.
This list is not correct. Half of the bands on here are not even punk, and shouldn't be before the Dead Kennedys. Anyway, Jello changes things not through unnecessary drama at iHeartRadio shows, but by consistently working towards his goals and leaving the band for what he believes in. The Dead Kennedys are more important to punk than Blink 182 and Green Day will ever be.
Really... Why number 13? Paramore, sum41, my chemical romance they are not "TRUE" punk sex pistols, black flag, dead kennedys that is true punk fast paced, catchy, memorable, that is what punk is and DK left a huge imprint on the world of music, first off Jello Biafra crafted lyrics that got a message across (Holiday In Cambodia for example) now DK modern day is not true DK without jello they might as well be the same as paramore but the true Dead Kennedys is when jello was the front man they had some of the most amazing sounding punk music (California uber alles&holiday in Cambodia for example) they push the limits of music and showed the world one punk could be.
If anything Dead Kennedys should be at the top, Jello Biafra fought for censorship and sang about individuality and freedom. His music represents the realness of our society, especially in the 80s.
Original hardcore punk music, I'm sorry to say but though I like some of the other bands on here many aren't actual punk bands. The Dead Kennedy's influenced many and deserve to be higher then Twenty.
Dead Kennedys was one of the leading bands in the California hardcore punk scene. They're one of the most influential punk bands of all time, and most talented.
While the majority of the band is a glorified cover band without their ideals, it doesn't diminish Jello or the music, since he wrote 90% of it. Don't go see them live, but enjoy the work they did with the real singer.
Why are so called "punk" bands such as Green Day, Sum 41 and Blink 182 at the very top of the list, but real punk bands such as The Misfits and the Dead Kennedys are just sitting here in the dust...
Guys, Green Day, blink-182, My Chemical Romance and Sum 41 AREN'T true punk rock. They are just pop-punk. Dead Kennedys, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Black Flag are the true bands.
The top few bands aren't even real punk, most of them fit into the alternative category better... The Dead Kennedys is my favorite punk band of all time! "Police Truck", "Holiday in Cambodia", "I Kill Children", "Buzzbomb", and their cover of "I Fought the Law" are their best songs in my opinion, give them a listen! - Mousike
At least top five, without this hardcore punk band many that came after would not have a career! The constant use of political ideology and satire made them an icon in the 1980's.
One of the absolute best. Green Day sucks and isn't punk. Listen to meaningful stuff like the Dead Kennedys and the Ramones and Sex Pistols. Not this Green Day and My Chemical Romance crap.
