They came along at a time when rock music was in a major down cycle, and so easily beat out their contemporary competition, mostly crappy hair bands. Had they started up in the late 1960's, they would have been considered no better than mid-level, definitely a step down from the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, etc.

An album as original and amazing as Nevermind probably won't ever happen again, Nirvana is one of the best and most original bands to ever live

Ok then how come Come As You Are has a Riff that sounds like The Eighties - Killing Joke yeah they are totally original

Uh not really

Famous doesn't mean they are good

It's not there are so many better songs heck its not the best song on nevermind

Just because a band has mutliple hit songs doesn't mean they are good in fact their hits aren't their best songs

Yeah but so did Pearl Jam Alice in Chains and Soundgarden
