Top Ten Reasons Why 2016 Was a Terrible Year for Music

The Top Ten

1 Many great singers like David Bowie and Prince died

We lost too many icons this year, but particularly in music. Besides Bowie & Prince passing away, we also lost Maurice White, Glenn Frey, Paul Kantner, Keith Emerson, Billy Paul, Nick Menza among many, many others. So not only is 2016 a year with terrible music by terrible musicians, it's taking all the good musicians away from us. - Mrveteran

I can at least say that David Bowie went out with probably the biggest bang you'll hear...ever. - WonkeyDude98

First we lost Elvis Presley then John Lennon, then Kurt Cobain, then George Harrison, then Aaliyah, then Michael Jackson, then Amy Winehouse, then Whitney Houston, then David Bowie, then Prince, then George Michael. We're losing all of our legends.

May they both rest in piece. - 906389

2 Most of the songs sound the same

Some songs legitimately sound the same, trust me I listen to both car radio and Pandora, but MOST absolutely do not - Mcgillacuddy

No, they really don't - Kaboom

Every pop song this year

Autotuned singing
Autotuned chorus
Really long electronic 'dance' 'music'
a bit more singing
more electronic 'music' - AnonymousChick

3 The songs this year sound boring and bland

We need a new genre to be good.

That's only because you listen to songs that are boring and bland. - SwagFlicks

You kidding me? I turn up to most of the songs that came out this year - Mcgillacuddy

Don't Let Me Down, Ride, Too Good, Irresistible, Colors, Pity Party, Wild Things, anything Pan! c, Cut It, all boring and bland - ProPanda

To be fair, Wild Things and Too Good are a bit colorless, but far from boring. - WonkeyDude98

4 No upbeat songs

No upbeat songs? Even on the radio, flipping ADELE is making upbeat songs. - WonkeyDude98

Excuse me? No upbeat songs? Are you serious?
Here's another bland and ludicrous statement which goes by the assumption that all music is poppy chart drivel.
So, some of the most beautiful tracks like Sansa, Lupulus and Beneath With Me, giving you a fully upbeat vibe and the sheer joy from the melody, making many people who have heard them reflect on what's positive in their lives, don't count at all? - PositronWildhawk

It is just that most of the songs this year I listened to do not really sound upbeat, maybe I should listen to more music from this year? But I do count the songs you mentioned upbeat. It is nice to see you PositronWildhawk, one of the greatest users of this website. I would really like to improve, can I have some advice from you?

5 Terrible singers like Justin Bieber, Meghan Trainor, and Drake top the charts

Probably one of the worst years for music simply because most of the chart music wasn't very good or very bad but because it was boring and dull. Music has been on a 4/10 level throughout the year. At least previous years had something I could get angry at or something I loved. However, in the pop charts nothing like that happened. Even worse, a Drake song topped the charts for 15 weeks in the UK based on streaming alone. Really. It overtook Bohemian Rhapsody's record at number one because people couldn't stop streaming it. A utter joke. - Mrveteran

And there we go again, Let us be happy Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift did not top the charts. - ArigatoKawaii

Yeah, I hate Taylor Swift, her songs are not even that good and they get too overplayed. Also, she blamed Katy for so called stealing her dancers, when she really was contracting them back. Nicki Minaj is worse, most of her songs are annoying, like Anaconda.

Twenty one pilots are awesome so be grateful

Justin Bieber has been churning out objectively great music over the past year, but I'm so thoroughly sick of him that other than Love Yourself, I can't enjoy any of it anymore.

I'll give you Meghan and Drake though, but SERIOUSLY LOOK PAST THE CHARTS PEOPLE - WonkeyDude98

6 The song "Sweatshirt" by Jacob Sartorious is awful

Not liking one song is not a reason to call the entire year bad. - Kaboom

Don't think this should be called music. - DapperPickle

Maybe this year will get better. One can only dream. - Martinglez

7 Too much house, trap, and rap music

"Too much"? It's only too much if you choose to listen to too much of it - Britgirl

I go on YouTube to try out what new music came and most of it is just trap, rap, and house. But not all songs sound like this, some of them are ballads.

I use Pandora and this music isn't as bad as you think it is, but there are quite a few rap and trap songs this year that just made me go what the hell - Mcgillacuddy

Not all house music is bad though. But I'm a sucker for melodic house so...

"Too much house and rap"

and this is why this site is horrible - WonkeyDude98

8 Many comebacks of artists this year were disappointing

Adele's music offerings this year have been below her best, Alicia Keyes sold out to do generic dance music, AIM by MIA was disappointing and contained a guest verse from a former One Direction member & Radiohead have become everything their critics always claimed they were with their lacklustre LP A Moon Shaped Pool. The only established artists not to embarrass themselves were Green Day, Metallica & The Stone Roses of all bands, and even then they have done far better work previously. - Mrveteran

I agree with you, I actually liked the Green Day comeback. Their new song Bang Bang managed to be good, the sad part is that this is the only song I like from this year.

Lady Gaga's comeback was okay, but I found it a little underwhelming for some reason.

Yes, because David Bowie (and departure) and Lady Gaga comebacks are disappointing. - WonkeyDude98

David Bowie
Bon Jovi
Green Day
Lady Gaga
Mike Posner (sorta)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Goo Goo Dolls
and blinnk-182 were disappointing - ProPanda

I actually did not mean all comebacks, and I should of put pop on this list instead. I like Green Day and Blink182.

9 DJ Snake made worse songs

When has this guy ever made good songs? - Mrveteran

DJ Snake's getting insanely downhill. SHEET. First Lil Wayne, then Kanye West, and then Maroon 5 and NOW HIM?!?!?! - AlphaQ

OK, Encore was kinda disappointing I'll give it that. But IT WAS GOOD! - ProPanda

I've hated DJ Snake since the beginning, honestly. - WonkeyDude98

10 Most of 2016 is Annoying

The Contenders

11 The Chainsmokers The Chainsmokers The Chainsmokers are an American DJ and production duo consisting of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. The EDM-pop duo achieved a breakthrough with their 2014 song "#Selfie", which was a top twenty single in several countries.

12 Barely any hit singles

Honestly...I kind of agree. Other than Into You and I Took A Pill In Ibiza, what have people really talked about? - WonkeyDude98

Aren't there hit singles every year though?

More songs hit the top ten, the number spot this year than 2015 and even 2014 - ProPanda

Then what about the songs that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100? - SwagFlicks

13 There are barely any new good singers

Melanie Martinez the one I stand for but there was barely no good singers. Jacob, please stop! - ArigatoKawaii

Alessia was last year. THis is the only good point from the list, except that Kent Jones might have talent. - ProPanda

Music is way to broad to say that there aren't any "new good singers".

So what? - Kaboom

14 Not much good pop

The only ones I do enjoy from this year are Cheap Thrills, Into You, This is what you came for, Send my Love, Side to Side, Sit Still look Pretty, Perfect Illusion, Just Like Fire and Timmy Turner. - 906389

Into You, Kill Em With Kindness, Emotion Side B, Owl City's music scores, all great pop songs from the year - ProPanda

Not even mentioning albums from Beyoncé, Rihanna, Foxes, and a single from CHVRCHES, all of which range from good to AMAZING.

Though while rap is doing just fine outside the mainstream, the fact that Doomtree decided to release the mediocre at best Spill Me Up as a single makes me quiver. - WonkeyDude98

15 Too many forgettable songs
16 My Chemical Romance didn't get back together

Face the reality people. My Chemical Romance are not getting back together. Deal with it.

17 The only people left that could sing are Adele and Beyoncé.

Or maybe you're just not doing a very good job looking? Because there are still tons of artists that can sing.

Well, you are half right. Adele can sing.

18 Too upbeat
19 Twenty One Pilots is overrated
20 Stressed Out was overplayed

This song grates my ears and hearing this pseudo-inspiration crap hurts my ears. - Swellow

Even if it was, I would rather have that than other overplayed efforts like 7 Years & I Took A Pill In Ibiza. Twenty One Pilots were one of the few mainstream bands I could stomach this year. - Mrveteran

It wasn't too overplayed compared to some songs. It was overplayed in '15, not '16 - AnonymousChick

Thank god I barely listen to radio. because I still really like this song - ryansliao
