Top Ten Reasons Why a Band Is Deemed Overrated

The Top Ten
1 The artist makes a song that becomes an instant hit.

Example Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

2 The artist's fans don't stop talking about them.

I think this applies to beliebers, not to Linkin Park fans.

Most often the case with Linkin Park fans.

Yep. This is true Linkin Park fans.

3 They have multiple hit songs on radio airplay

Maroon 5 in a nutshell!

4 A member of the band dies.

For both this and the one where the band breaks up, the fans will deeply miss them and more fans will start liking them.

But it's not Cliff Burton's death that made Metallica overrated.

Cough Nirvana cough

Like with Green Day being the revolutionaries of mainstream punk rock.

Are you saying that Nirvana is overrated?

10 Everyone keeps talking about them
The Contenders
11 They have a large following even though most people don't like them.
12 They only have one good song

Not sure if this is a good reason. If only one good song, that probably means it's their only popular song and that no one has any clue who they might be if they like other music that's similar but more popular.

13 A game has songs by them in the game's OST

Between the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater/Underground/American Wasteland games I've played like 8 years ago, there are a few bands out there that some would say are overrated, such as Iron Maiden and AC/DC. But the majority of the time, I've found songs by bands I've never heard of, most of them in the punk genre which I guess Neversoft was a big fan of. I don't really know of most of those bands, unless by chance they made music exclusively for those.

Grand Theft Auto and Guitar Hero/Rock Band are potentially more like it, with more tunes to find by more popular artists, most notably in the latter games, which OBVIOUSLY have music, while Grand Theft Auto just has radio stations which are of course the ones to just play only popular stuff. Not like I play these games, but I have seen and heard about them.

I personally find songs in-game to be okay. Music videos, with clips of the game themselves are basically like AMVs, fan-made stuff, so that doesn't really count in that case.

14 They keep appearing in media
15 They have music that sounds too similar to other bands.
16 They make radio friendly songs
