Retro games were notorious for being very difficult, while modern games can be difficult most of them weren't as neary as difficult as a lot of those retro games, this list is for those really difficult retro games kids today will are likely to give up on.

The Top Ten

1 Silver Surfer

I doubt the 80s kids could beat this either. - Zach808

This game is darn near impossible everything in this game kills with one hit most gamers give up without even beating one stage to quote the Angry Video Game Nerd "You touch the side of the building you die, you touch the ceiling you die, you touch the floor you die, you move too quick to the right you die, you move too quick to the left you die, you die, you die, die, die, DIE, DIE, DIE! ". - egnomac

2 Ninja Gaiden
3 Ghosts N' Goblins

This game relies so much on crappy enemy generators and unpredictable patterns that most people regardless of age would ragequit. It's just not a very well designed game in general. - Zach808

4 Contra
5 Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
6 Metroid (NES)

Unless you have a strategy guide in hand your going to find yourself stuck. - egnomac

I'm pretty sure they'd give it up then too - TwilightKitsune

Samus is awesome - BlazingParasol

7 Castlevania

As hard as this game is, it's short. I could easily see kids from this generation beating it, as long as they're patient. - Zach808

Yet another difficult nes game a lot of the later enemys take up a huge amount of hits to kill not making things easy are the flying Medusa heads that fly at you while your trying to defeat enimies and youll constantly find yourself getting knocked back into pits. - egnomac

This was difficult even with savestates

(Castlevania 3, however, was vastly harder) - xandermartin98

8 Mike Tyson's Punch -Out!!

Its less of a boxing game and more like a puzzle game where you need to figure their fight pattern to figure out how to beat them, the trick is the timings are incredibly tight your only given a few seconds to attack before they strike but the moment that'll really make kids today give up is facing Mike Tyson whose incredibly cheap and can take you down with a few hits. - egnomac

9 Battletoads

This game mercifully beats you down and has you begging for more, The first two stages are managable but the games difficulty really cranks up at level 3 the pod racers which starts fairly enough but holy hell does it speed up quickly pushing your reflexes to the limit. - egnomac

In this game, the rubber ducks kill you in one hit.

I wish I was kidding. - Zach808

10 Street Fighter 2010

This game is brutally hard you have to beat it within a time limit even if you make it to the final boss the timer doesn't reset if time runs out than its game over, the only way too beat it is to do everything quickly and get all the power ups which is easier said then done. - egnomac

The Contenders

11 Comix Zone

No Sega Genesis.

12 Back to the Future (Nes)
13 Dark Castle

If the games music dosen't make you want to quit the games frustrating gameplay will. - egnomac

If you’re playing the god-awful console ports, you’re not beating it no matter what. However, the PC version is actually pretty fun. - Zach808

14 Shinobi
15 Contra III: The Alien Wars
16 Earthworm Jim 2
17 Mickey Mousecapade
18 Phantasy Star
19 Link: The Faces of Evil
20 Zelda: Wand of Gamelon
21 Super Mario Super Mario Mario is the main character in the Mario Bros. Franchise, who was created by the creative director and video game designer at Nintendo of Japan, Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario has appeared in almost every Mario Game, including spinoff series, as a playable character, with few exceptions including New Super more.
22 Mega Man & Bass
23 Mega Man (Nes)

Yellow Devil took me hours to beat due to his hitboxes. If it wasn’t for him, I’d recommend this game to pretty much anyone. It’s challenging, but a lot less cheap than something like Ghosts n’ Goblins or Ninja Gaiden. - Zach808
