Top 10 Rock Artists that are Not for Everyone

For this list I'm including rock artists that are either too complex, explicit, or unusual for listeners. I'm also including metal bands as well because metal is a subgenre of rock so it counts.
The Top Ten
1 Anal C*** Anal C*** was an American grindcore band founded by vocalist Seth Putnam in 1988 in Newton, Massachusetts. The band is known for their highly offensive lyrics which included themes of misogyny, homophobia, racism, Nazism, antisemitism, and schadenfreude (ridicule of the unfortunate). Their music has been received negatively by critics, which the band stated that their music was intentionally bad, just to get negative reviews. Anal C*** ended when Seth Putnam died from a heart attack in 2011.

Their songs are all really offensive and would have people up in arms about how truly dirty they were.

Does anyone actually like these idiots?

I don't listen to their music at all.

They are a joke band, I believe.

2 GG Allin Kevin Michael "GG" Allin (born Jesus Christ Allin; 1956-1993) was an American singer, songwriter and record producer, who performed and recorded with many groups during his career. He was best known for his graphic live performances which included self-mutilation, parading around the stage naked, fighting with members of his audience, and even eating his own feces. He was also known for his vulgar lyrics (which had themes of misogyny, pedophilia, blasphemy, and racism) which polarized listeners and created varied opinions of him. When questioned about his music and shows, Allin often replied that he was trying to make rock music "dangerous" again. ...read more.

This dude was insane. He would always beat up his fans, parade around onstage naked, and eat his own feces. Not to mention that his graphic lyrics are enough to shock all the soccer moms out of their minds.

3 Mayhem Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1984 in Oslo, regarded as one of the pioneers of the Norwegian black metal scene. The band is also known for the infamous events surrounding them including the 1991 suicide of vocalist Dead (in which former guitarist Euronymous took pictures of Dead's corpse and used one of them as the front cover for one of their live albums) and the 1993 murder of Euronymous by former member Varg Vikernes, of Burzum.

I think Euronymous wasn't satanist, he was just insane as hell. And he wanted to kill Varg, Varg just protected himself (Varg has a youtube channel named ThuleanPerspective, and I saw he replied to someone "Euronymous was just a loser, a nobody. Everybody knew it back then"). Dead was depression, and he was interested in the postmortem theme since his age 10 if I know well. This band is really sick anyway I admit it, and their music is very dark and the lyrics is evil, so it's definitely not for anyone.

Definitely NOT for everyone. This is a legit satanic band. All the members are absolutely insane. Their guitarist was a satanist, their drummer is a racist, and their bassist is a murderer. I seriously don't recommend this band to anyone who wants to get into metal.

I actually like Death Metal, one of the best genres. However, I don't like Black Metal because it is too Satanic and I am Christian, so yeah. every time I watch the music videos, they literally do things worshipping Satan, and burn down churches.

Gotta agree with Mayhem and Cannibal Corpse. These bands are not for everyone including Metalheads.

4 Cannibal Corpse Cannibal Corpse is a American death metal band from Buffalo, New York, formed in 1988. The band is known for their graphic album covers, explicitly violent lyrics and song titles like "I C** Blood" The group got into mainstream after performing the song "Hammer Smashed Face" in the 1994 film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. In 1995, vocalist Chris Barnes left the band to focus on his new death metal project Six Feet Under. He was replaced by George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher of the band Monstrosity, who has remained as the frontman since. ...read more.

If you thought Allin was explicit then wait til you see Cannibal Corpse. This band is really extreme with very gorey lyrics and album covers that would completely turn off anyone.

That you would refer to any of these sociopaths as "artist" defies comprehension.

5 Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention The Mothers of Invention were an American rock band from California that served as the backing musicians for Frank Zappa. Their work is marked by the use of sonic experimentation, innovative album art, and elaborate live shows.
6 Ween Ween is an American experimental rock band formed in 1984, in New Hope, PA. It's members are Dean and Gene Ween.

This amazing band doesn't have a consistent genre so I don't understand how there's not something in the pile of genres dor everyone. White pepper is a very accessable album.

7 Marilyn Manson Marilyn Manson is an American rock band from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Formed in 1989 by frontman Marilyn Manson and Daisy Berkowitz, the group was originally named Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids with their theatrical performances gathering a local cult following in the early 1990s. The name of the band comes from famous sex symbol Marilyn Monroe and famous criminal Charles Manson. Manson joined these two names together because he wanted a name combined with good (Monroe) and evil (Manson). The other members of the band have their stage names combined with the first names of famous sex symbols and the last names of famous serial killers.

I know he used to be popular but he's fallen out of the mainstream pretty much so he deserves a spot on this list. This guy is really out there. His costumes, music videos, and performances are beyond terrifying and will probably scare people away from rock. He's definitely not for everyone.

8 Sonic Youth Sonic Youth was an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, and rounded out the core line-up.

What's wrong with Sonic Youth?

9 The Mentors The Mentors are an American heavy metal band, formed in 1976, noted for their deliberately shock rock lyrics.

Women would absolutely hate this band. Their lyrics are absolutely sexist and misogynistic. Don't play this around any women.

10 GWAR Gwar, often styled as GWAR, is an American heavy metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia, United States, in 1984, composed of and operated by a frequently rotating line-up of musicians, artists and filmmakers collectively known as Slave Pit Inc.

They mostly dress up as alien monsters and kill celebrities onstage in a darkly comedic way. Their sense of humor is certainly not for everybody.

The Contenders

His influence on fashion, music, and pop culture in general remains as his legacy--along, of course, with his unforgettable music.

Even though their frontman is Catholic, their lyrics are very sacrilegious and explicit. Not a good band for average listeners.

16 R.E.M. R.E.M. was an American alternative rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 by lead singer Michael Stipe, lead guitarist Peter Buck, bassist/backing vocalist Mike Mills, and drummer Bill Berry.

How is rem not for everyone

17 Dream Theater Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band from Boston, Massachusetts. The band was formed in 1985 under the name of "Majesty", only to change its name to Dream Theater later.

The members of the band’s original lineup consisted of John Petrucci (Guitar), John Myung (Bass) and Mike Portnoy (Drums). The band had multiple keyboardists and singers, but as of and since 1991, the band's lead vocalist has been James LaBrie.

Just like Blind Guardian, not too heavy or explicit, but way too complex for listeners.

18 Gorgoroth Gorgoroth is a Norwegian black metal band based in Bergen. Formed in 1992 by Infernus, the band is named after the dead plateau of evil and darkness in the land of Mordor (a fictional location in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings).

The most evil band ever

19 Blind Guardian Blind Guardian is a German power metal band formed in the mid-1980s in West Germany. They are often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal subgenres. Heavily influenced by Queen, they use the technique of overdubbing. They also incorporate large amounts of orchestral arrangements. Hansi Kürsch creates a huge choir effect by overdubbing his own voice multiple times in complex, overlapping harmonies. Thanks to overdubs and numerous backing vocals Blind Guardian stand out with a very dense sound.

They're not too heavy or explicit, but they would be too complex for listeners. Plus, nobody would understand their lyrics which are about fantasy related topics (which makes sense cause fantasies aren't for everyone).

20 Milkcan

This band isn't even real. It's from a game called UmJammer Lammy.

21 Carcass Carcass are a British extreme metal band from Liverpool, who formed in 1985 and disbanded in 1995. A reformation was enacted in 2007 without one of its original members, drummer Ken Owen, due to health reasons.

Their first 2, Goregrind albums are definitely only for people who are seriously into brutality.

22 Hole Hole was an American alternative rock band that formed in Los Angeles, California in 1989 by singer and guitarist Courtney Love and lead guitarist Eric Erlandson.
23 Between the Buried and Me Between the Buried and Me is an American progressive metal band from Raleigh, North Carolina. Formed in 2000, the band consists of Tommy Giles Rogers, Jr.

Definitely takes some patience to get used to if you have no grasp on the Progressive Metal and Metalcore aspects of it.

24 Blink 182 Blink-182 is a pop-punk band formed in 1992. The original lineup consisted of Mark Hoppus on bass guitar and vocals, Tom DeLonge on guitar and vocals, and Scott Raynor on drums. Not a well known band (they're from the same city as Sepultura - Belo Horizonte), but basically they created black metal, and their lyrics is very satanic.
