Distortion in Rock Music, usually has guitar riffs that sound distorted and very loud they're generally pretty fast and common in: Grunge music, post- grunge music, nu metal, pop punk (Sometimes), thrash metal (Very often), and I think (Symphonic Metal) maybe there's more but it's a very common guitar technique.
