Top Ten Rock/Metal Songs that are the First of Their Subgenres

The Top Ten
1 Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (Doom Metal)
2 Stone Cold Crazy - Queen (Thrash Metal)

Yes I very much agree with this song as first thrash metal song. Cause you said on the list "Top Ten Early Song Examples for Metal Genres" that Symptom of the Universe was the first thrash metal song. I got little bit of confused with your comment back then.

Not even close. Paranoid and Children of the Grave by Black Sabbath and Breadfan by Budgie came out before Stone Cold Crazy.

3 Hard Lovin' Man - Deep Purple (Speed Metal)

This song doesn't seem like a speed metal song to me. However I remember once you said Stone Cold Crazy was the first speed metal song. But I'd choose between Fireball or Highway Star.

4 Louie Louie - The Kingsmen (Garage Rock)
5 I Got a Right - The Stooges (Hardcore Punk)

Released in '77 but it was recorded in '72, so it's technically hardcore punk even before the punk itself.

6 Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues (Progressive Rock)
7 Warrior - Riot (Power Metal)

@zxm Stargazer is more like trad. heavy metal. A Light in the Black is more power metal, but it's heavier than typical power metal so it's classified as speed metal.

Stargazer by Rainbow was the first Power Metal song.

Stargazer by Rainbow also deserves to be here.

8 (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones (Hard Rock)
9 Speed King - Deep Purple (Heavy Metal)
10 The Nile Song - Pink Floyd (Grunge)
The Contenders
11 My Generation - The Who (Hard Rock)
12 Heart Full of Soul - The Yardbirds (Psychedelic Rock)
13 Kick Out the Jams - Mc5 (Punk Rock)

I don't think there's anything like this much earlier.

14 Death Walks Behind You - Atomic Rooster (Progressive Metal)

One of the rare songs from the early 70s that scream heavy metal to me. 21st Century Schizoid Man showed early signs of metal but is not metal. It is heavy jazz fusion.
