The Contenders
11 The Kinks The Kinks were an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, in 1964 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most important and influential rock bands of the 1960s.

To this day, Ray Davies is one of my favorite songwriters. I think he's one of the best lyricists ever.

12 The Jimi Hendrix Experience The Jimi Hendrix Experience was an English-American rock band that formed in Westminster, London, in September 1966. Composed of singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jimi Hendrix, bassist and backing vocalist Noel Redding, and drummer Mitch Mitchell, the band was active until June 1969. During this time they released three successful studio albums.

I think the reason why Jimi Hendrix was such a big influence was that he was the whole package. He had great chops, he experimented in the studio, came up with some clever chord patterns, didn't just listen to one genre, and was an epic showman.

13 The Animals The Animals are an English band of the 1960s, formed in Newcastle upon Tyne, during the early part of the decade.

They had a rougher edge that was sorely missing from most British pop bands. Eric Burdon's voice still blows my mind.

15 Creedence Clearwater Revival Creedence Clearwater Revival, often shortened to Creedence and abbreviated as CCR, was an American rock band active in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

They're still one of my favorite groups. It's because they represent rock and roll as well as its roots, and because John Fogerty was a great songwriter. Lennon and McCartney made me want to become a songwriter, but John made me feel like I could actually do it.

16 Cream Cream were a 1960s British rock supergroup power trio consisting of bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce, drummer Ginger Baker, and guitarist/vocalist Eric Clapton.

I don't know if they were the first rock trio, but they laid the foundations that many trios afterwards would try to imitate.

17 The Yardbirds The Yardbirds are an English rock band formed in London in 1963 that had a string of hits during the mid-1960s, including "For Your Love", "Heart Full of Soul" and "Over Under Sideways Down".

The nurturing ground for Clapton, Beck, and Page, they also helped to bridge the gap between blues and psychedelia. Another favorite group of mine.

18 The Band The Band was a Canadian-American roots rock group formed in 1965 . Which originally consisting of Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, vocals), Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboards, saxophones, trumpet), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, vocals) and Robbie Robertson (guitar, percussion, vocals) .

Considering that most of them were from Canada, I love how they capture the feel of American roots music. Their catalog still holds up to this day.

19 The Byrds The Byrds were an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1964. The band underwent multiple line-up changes throughout its existence, with frontman Roger McGuinn remaining the sole consistent member, until the group disbanded in 1973. Although they only managed to attain the huge commercial success of contemporaries like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Rolling Stones for a short period, the Byrds are today considered by critics to be one of the most influential bands of the 1960s.

Crazy to think how many jangly guitarists throughout the years (everyone from Chris Bell to Tom Petty to Peter Buck) took cues from Roger McGuinn. They also were restless enough to never stay in one spot, moving from folk to psychedelia to country and mixing them in certain cases.

20 Tina Turner Tina Turner, née Anna Mae Bullock, was a singer, dancer, actress and author, whose career spanned more than half a century, earning her widespread recognition and numerous awards.
