Rock Songs with the Best Lyrics

The Top Ten

1 Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

Great song

This is one of the best songs ever

Greatest lyrics, greatest song

2 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

A song like Bohemian Rhapsody is legend, is inspiring for anyone and everyone. Chilling lyrics, amazing song through and through.

Freddie Mercury was a music genius. Respect for him forever. RIP

I had such a hard time choosing between this, Stairway to Heaven, and November Rain. How could the greatest song of all time not be chosen?

Strong lyrics along with great guitar work... its an absolute delight to hear this song

3 Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

Love this choice..."We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year... Running over the same old ground, and having found... The same old fears... Wish you were here"
Roger Waters and David Gilmour were masters at their respective crafts; Roger's artistry and skill with lyrics and David's artistry and skill with guitar; yet deeply dependent upon each other. This song poetically exposes a feeling of trepidation and insecurity they both shared in moving the band's creative styling forward and more in the direction of an exploding pop-rock culture, without the strong persona of their leader and friend Sid Barrett...
Water's lyrics are so powerful and telling of his own self-doubt of the decision to move away from Sid's daringly creative style in order to capitalize on the opportunities and riches of a more popular one... "did you exchange, a walk-on part in the war, for a lead role in a cage"
Pink Floyd (during this particular time) was as good as it gets! But ...more

The exact reason why this is one of my favourite PF songs. - Userguy44

The lyric says how good it would be if we bring back the human side, it's not a love song but a call to reason. "Wish you were here" is a poem that touches us in many ways. Pink Floyd used to be a mix beteween good writters and poets, we love the lyric at the first sight but "the water is always deeper than it reflects", Pink Ployd is same thing.

This is not acceptable... Waiting for the end and fake plastic trees are joke songs by joke bands... Linkin Park and Radiohead are "joke rock". I really wish I had written this song... Where are all the Floyd fans at? After Comfortably Numb and Echoes, this is the Floyd masterpiece... And if you are talking about lyrics, there are two passages, not that long, but every consonant and syllable matters... Great conversion of skill from Waters to Gilmour

4 Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas

Truely awesome lyrics

Such inspirational lyrics. Always been one of my favorites. - Beatlesboy9

The lyrics of the song is very inspiring and very rhyming

awful song

5 November Rain - Guns N' Roses

The Greatest Hard Rock Band Ever

The best song ever

I love axl rose

Indeed best lyrics with best vocal and guitar solo.
But nothing last forever even cold november rain...
Missing my old Guns N' Roses band.

6 Dream On - Aerosmith

Great lyric to guide your life;

Half my life
Is in books written pages
Lived and learned from fools and
From sages Great way to describe getting older;

Great metaphor for getting older;

Every time that I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face getting clearer
The past is gone
It went by, like dusk to dawn - ddenny

Awesome song with the awesome guitar play..

I love aerosmith!

7 Breaking the Habit - Linkin Park

Amazing song but crawling has better lyrics...

Amazing song, amazing lyrics... Truly a brilliant. - 05yusuf09

Really great song and fantastic lyrics... I don't know if it belongs here?...but, I deeply felt it and live it in these days...

It should be in top 15 at least...

8 Imagine - John Lennon

Beautiful lyrics. This song is great. - Userguy44

I agree with the other comment, except that this is the greatest song ever and arguably has the best lyrics, if any song is an image of peace and is the anthem of peace loving hippie movement it is this one.

I prefer working class hero though

9 Closer to the Heart - Rush

This should also be in the top 10 - LizardKing99

10 Kashmir - Led Zeppelin

"Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face
And stars fill my dream
I'm a traveler of both time and space
To be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race
This world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait
All will be revealed"

No. 1 hands down

Come on this is the best. Number one... Nothing even close

Better than stairway to heaven

The Contenders

11 Viva la Vida - Coldplay

Anyone could apply this to one stage of their life or another. People who stop to listen to the meaning of the lyrics realise how powerful this song really is.

12 The Show Must Go On - Queen

How isn’t this higher? - Userguy44

13 Without You - Breaking Benjamin

This song touch my heart

This song speaks to me on a religious level.

This band has so many great songs.

14 The Unforgiven - Metallica

This song really speaks. It's lyrics are deep, and it just gives you the feels.

I was shoked there were 171 songs and this one was missing. Even if you don't like metal or Metallica, just read the lyrics. Deep, meaningful, philosophical. Full with social criticism yet very personal and emotional.
"You labelled me, I'll label you. So I dub the unforgiven."
"What I've felt, what I've known never shined through in what I've shown." - Metal_Treasure

15 Iris - The Goo Goo Dolls

AMAZING SONG. The lyrics have a good meaning if you listen at 50 seconds and finish the song. To me it talks about how people hide who they are because they are afraid of what the world has to say. I reccomend listening to the song

16 Fin - Anberlin
17 Do You Hear Me - Adema
18 Looking for Angels - Skillet

Didn't know so many people know this band... Yea skillet

19 Peace Sells - Megadeth

What do you mean I don't believe in God?
Talk to him every day
What do you mean I don't support your system?
I go to court when I have to
What do you mean I can't get to work on time?
Got nothing better to do
What do you mean I don't pay my bills?
Why do you think I'm broke? Huh?

20 The Bard's Song (In the Forest) - Blind Guardian

a d&d must

21 Speculum - Adema
22 Evil Angel - Breaking Benjamin

Excellent song!

This was my anthem for 2012!

23 Money - Pink Floyd
24 Fly Away - Lenny Kravitz
25 Nothing Else Matters - Metallica

So close no matter how far
Couldn't be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
And nothing else matters
Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don't just say
And nothing else matters

Just listening to the opening Rocks my Mind!

Encouraging lyrics. Should be 1

26 Dear Agony - Breaking Benjamin

A good one.. Deserves a higher rank.

27 Tom Sawyer - Rush

32 The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana

The Man Who Sold the World Is a Bowie's Song! This is a Cover!

well I proudly say that this song is one of the greatest songs ever made.. david bowies version's not as good as nirvana's.. and lyrically its awesomee

33 Echoes - Pink Floyd

Probably my favorite lyrical song ever.

This song just gives me chills!

"And no one called us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's
Something stirs and something tries
Starts to climb toward the light

Strangers passing in the street

By chance two separate glances meet

And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand

The best I can"

Poetic, otherworldly.

42 Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead

She looks like the real thing. She tastes like the real thing. My fake plastic love.

43 The Time - Pink Floyd

44 Dani California - Red Hot Chili Peppers
45 Feel Good Drag - Anberlin
46 Leave Out All the Rest - Linkin Park

Great lyrics which we can all relate to

47 Hotel California - The Eagles

Hotel California is one of the greatest lyrical pieces in rock history. They tell a story in a mesmerizing and eerie way and you can't help but get teleported to the dark desert highway while listening to these. Great song about addiction.

48 Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

What does it mean anyway? - Userguy44

This needs to be on the list

These lyrics are just so perfectly absurd that you can't help to love it, and for me sometimes I feel as if I get what he's saying, the message or whatever... Even though there really isn't

I found it hard it's hard to find
Oh well whatever nevermind

Gotta love it.

49 Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden

Best rock song combined with a storytelling lyric. True heavy metal.

The lyrics in this song are chilling and executed perfectly by Bruce Dickinson

Why is this not higher? "I'm waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesn't have much time
Cause at 5 o'clock, they take me to the Gallows Pole
The sands of time for me are running low"

50 Stricken - Disturbed
