Top Ten Rock Songs That Make You Wonder How They Became Hit Songs

These are songs with either strange or derogatory messages, or just plain not appealing to what rock songs are generally like. Songs like Closer and Creep fall into this category, Closer in particular because of it's sexual message. Some of these are hit songs and they aren't even fan favorites, many of which are songs you hear on rock radio very often.
The Top Ten
1 Closer - Nine Inch Nails

I bet the only reason this got popular is because sex sells.

It's a good song, but nowhere near the best NIN song

2 Creep - Radiohead

Jonny Greenwood was actually trying to deliberately ruin the song with that super edgy shredding part before the chorus. It ended up being one of the song highlights, not that that stops the band from deliberately NOT playing the song in live shows.

This is a great song

3 Aerials - System of a Down
4 Jeremy - Pearl Jam
5 Plush - Stone Temple Pilots
6 Live and Let Die - Paul McCartney and Wings

Um... it's a Bond theme.

7 Last Resort - Papa Roach

The riff is sampled from Iron Maiden's Genghis Khan. (I probably just butchered the name).

8 The Beautiful People - Marilyn Manson

This song is literally so popular it was used more than once and your likely to hear it if you haven't already.

Actually, you start to wonder how MM became a hit artist in the first place.

9 Cryin' Like a Bitch - Godsmack
10 That Smell - Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Contenders
11 Wonderwall - Oasis
12 What I Like About You - The Romantics
13 Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
14 Say It Ain't So - Weezer
15 All Star - Smash Mouth
16 Basket Case - Green Day
17 No Rain - Blind Melon
18 November Rain - Guns N' Roses
19 Enter Sandman - Metallica
20 Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
21 Pepper - Butthole Surfers

How did this reach #38? Great song but surprising still.
