21 Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball Z Dragon Ball Z is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation. Dragon Ball Z follows the adventures of Goku who, along with the Z Warriors, defends the Earth against evil. The action adventures are entertaining and reinforce the concept of good versus evil. Dragon Ball Z teaches valuable ...read more.

Are you kidding me? This anime isn't sad. Everyone can be easily revived using the dragon balls...

What kind of idiot lists Dragon Ball Z as one of the saddest anime? Fairy Tail is much sadder than DBZ! Shallow characters with no information on past whatsoever (except Vegeta, he is a well developed character). No PERMANENT deaths... Everyone can be revived using the Dragon Balls. Villains with no background as to why they became bad... DBZ is one of the best anime but doesn't deserve to be in the list. - Hellblazer94

The only sad scene that tugged at the heart strings was Vegeta being killed by Frieza. Other than that, everyone lives again when they are wished back by the Dragon Balls.

One can assume every single main character in this series only died due to old age at the very end, otherwise they were brought back with the dragon balls.

Well! For a hardcore DBZ fan the last episode of DB gt is way more sad.But fortunately it's not anymore because of DB super

22 Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

This anime was one of the most tragic I have ever seen.. The characters were beautifully presented and you could really become attached to them. The ending was so unexpected that I couldn't even cry from the shock..

This anime made me think about the ending for weeks after finishing it! I've watched almost over 80 animes but this comes in at least my top 15. The ending was one of the most unexpected, considering how the story flows throughout

This was a great anime. The ending was heartbreaking and something you never quite saw coming. I would compare this to claymore in its ability to create sudden tragic plot twists.

Epic, depressive and sad yet beatiful story. Nice character development. One of the most beatifully symbolyc endings that I've seen. Phantom Requiem is a story about the dark side of human heart, the manipulation to a person, loneliness, despair, guilt and the meaningless of life. A must watchable Urobuchi anime if you like dark stories, character development, nihilistic themes and action.

23 Claymore Claymore

Teresa's relationship with Clare was beautiful, and sad.

The story is sad for everyone. Most of the characters are orphans whose parents were killed by monsters.

Man those monsters always made me cry whenever they harm someone it's a great anime to watch

24 Guilty Crown Guilty Crown Guilty Crown is a 2011 Japanese anime television series produced by Production I.G which aired on Fuji TV's noitamina program block from October 2011. The story revolves around Shu Ouma, a high school boy who inadvertently obtains an ability called "Power of the King" that enables him to draw out items ...read more.

Well although this is not an overall sad anime and I must say they rushed the ending a bit. Know this I am a kind of person who does not get sad or starts to cry at an emotional anime or movie. But I actually wasn't expecting the outcome of this anime. It actually almost made me have tears in my eyes. I mean first this Shu guy lost a girl that he well cared about a lot and that changed him a lot. After that in the end he also lost the girl he loves. Sad enough? Well not quite so turns out the girls actually saves him and he is left all alone in the end that too with only one arm and no vision ( For those who don't know what I'm on about watch the full anime ) so yeah it really was a sad ending and I was surprised not to see it in the top 10 or top sad endings of animes. Don't judge me guys I'm new to this stuff I don't usually watch animes. I was out of movies and started to watch this on someone's reference and honestly I left my games and movies for this and finished 22 episodes in ...more

All I can say about this anime is the story is tragic the government is basically a dictatorship and has the right to kill anyone they think might be "infected" and that's where funeral parlor comes in hell even the resistance name is sad the story revolves around Shu ouma who ends up using the King's power also known as the void to help the resistance funeral parlor and try to change the world along the way shU loses himself and ends up turning evil he ends up returning to normal to stop the government but even so in or I pays the ultimate sacrifice to heal all the infected truly a sad beautiful show

Guilty crown is sadder than most of the above animes. Starting from Shu stabbing Gai through Mana, everything becomes so melancholic. Hare Menjou's death transforms Shu to become a harsh leader and implement the void ranking system. At last when Shu determines to save Inori, he finds her already resurrected to Mana and she starts the fourth apocalypse. Later he defeats Gai with Inori's void, which Inori's soul gives to him through a flower. And moreover at the end Inori dies and Shu becomes blind (due to absorbing the apocalypse affected people's cancer).

Deserves top be in the top 10

25 Hell Girl

Hell girl have different story because of the victims in each episode and some of their stories made me feel sad.

Every episode is a different story and in most of them, you find yourself getting attatched to the characters only for them to be deceived and thrown into Hell or some other sort of tragic happening.

The irony makes it feel sad and makes a person emotional at times.

Awesome anime not the saddest but definitely awesome!

26 Pokemon Pokemon Pokémon, abbreviated from the Japanese title of Pocket Monsters and currently advertised in English as Pokémon: The Series, is a Japanese anime television series, which has been adapted for the international television markets.

There is nothing sadder than whoever put this on this list

Really sad maybe not the saddest but do you remember the episodes: bye bye butterfree, charizard's burning ambitions, the fir-ing squad, bulbasaur the ambassador, gotta catch ya latter, do I hear a ralts, the whole togepi and mirage stuff, and sweet baby dreams.

How can it be sad! Whoever put this on the list, seriously dude I'm laughing. Yes - some episodes were sad yet it was dominated by funny/child friendly episodes

I bet the people who voted on Pokémon was there only anime

27 Berserk Berserk Berserk, also known as Sword-Wind Chronicle Berserk, is a Japanese anime television series that aired from 1997 to 1998. An adaptation of the manga Berserk, it comprises 25 half-hour episodes produced by Oriental Light and Magic and first aired on Nippon TV.

This is the first anime I've ever watched, I don't know why I started with it but, it's by far the saddest anime I've seen. Guts went from hating everyone, to having friends that he could call his family, just for him to get shoved right back into the Abyss of loneliness again. His life is just so messed up in every way, he will forever be cursed.

The ending is really really sad. No words to describe it.

This anime is the definition of Tragedy. The crushing feeling of seeing Griffith withered away and the betrayal at the end leaves you speechless.

Judeau... Just Judeau... I'll never get over his death...

28 Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

This anime was truly beautiful and the events that occurred within its story arc were things that happen in earthquakes and realistic scenarios that might take place in a magnitude 8 earthquake in Tokyo. I was a tsunami victim of the one that occurred in Japan during the same year this anime was released. I was eight years old when it happened. It was hard to get back home and a lot of my sister's school mates thought we were dead. When I watched this a few months ago, I thought of my own little brother in Yuki's place and the tears wouldn't stop falling

This is rated lower due to the fact that its not as well known as the other Animes and even though I do not know for sure (as I haven't seen every Anime ever created, believe me when I tell you that it is definitely in the top 5 saddest Animes ever created, I read things about other Animes being sad and after watching the whole series I'm like, "ehh yeah a little here and there" this is all very sad and an amazing Anime series that truly deserves further praise.

Special mention to "Wolf's Rain" as well, another sad and just as a whole fantastic Anime series, easily my favorite, best soundtrack and acting.

One part wanted to make me cry, but the it felt as though it told me to just wait a little until one part where it went all out and I started bawling my eyes out. This anime is awesome because it was showed in the year 2009 based on what might happen to 2 siblings in an massive 8.0 earthquake in Tokyo 2 years before the actual Tokyo earthquake had happen, but I know the 2011 Tokyo earthquake was a 9.0

I have watched this two times and yet I've cried each time! I love this anime and even though it isn't well known I vote it to be too 20 at least!?

30 Ai Yori Aoshi Ai Yori Aoshi Ai Yori Aoshi is a Japanese seinen manga written and illustrated by Kou Fumizuki and serialized from 1998 to 2005 in Hakusensha's Young Animal.

This anime shows love, tenderness, devotion, trust, honesty and loyalty, things that show be part of our everyday life. That with your close friends and others but specially with that one person you love.

31 07-Ghost

The story, the characters, the art, and the music; everything is just so sad and beautiful. It's a funny thing when (SPOILER) Mikage died in the manga, I didn't cry, but after I watched the anime, suddenly I just realized how sad it was and found myself cried uncontrollably in front of my computer screen. A definitely worth watching!

This anime comes in my top two anime! I've watched anime since I was 5, but this one is just awesome. After watching the anime, it's a must read manga. The ending is one of the most beautiful. Not only is the art good, but the opening, ending and background musics are one of my favourite!

It's beautiful, sad with a simply amazing soundtrack. The storyline is just so good I can't even-- It should be more well known!

I read it like seven times. I cry every time.

32 5 Centimeters Per Second

This anime tore me pieces, crying in my room due to the horrifying reality this movie shows. It's so realistic! It shows how no matter how hard we try, you ant always be with the one we love...

It's very sad anime. The story between Takaki and Akari who love each others. Maybe the setting took on 90's, Takaki trying to find Akari but he cannot find her because the technology in 90's. He's so stressed out. But finally he trying to move on to another girl but failed. Go watch by yourself

They are not meant for each other :-(

The sadist part of this Anime is it;s harsh reality. There is absolutely no sugar coating, it is probably one of the most accurate portrayals of life.
There are so mean undertones and metaphors there is no way to catch them all in one sitting; it is truly a work of art. For those who don't know this anime is about space not outer space or empty space. It is about the space between two people physically and emotional these both go hand in hand.
It is also a coming of age story about letting go of the one you love the most; it's not as corny as it sounds. Unlike many stories of the same topic this has nothing to do with death but has to do with the vacuum between two peoples hearts.
The personal part for me was a cautionary tail I received from this story. It is about watching the rest of the world pass you by. The protagonist did nothing to stop himself from drifting away from the one he loved and his life as a whole. He sat and wished that something else would happen and ...more

33 Gakuen Alice

Never in my life will I find a anime better than this! In the manga it always keeps you on your toes, wandering what will happen next. I personally was able to relate really well to Mikan, the main character. This story has the power to put you into depression and cry yourself to sleep. Amazing.

This was normal anime but when you read the manga it is so much sadder. The deaths of the characters is heartbreaking. The manga is so sad even though is is long it is still great. It is still super heartbreaking I'm crying as we speak.

This manga is so heartbreaking! SPOILER I really want to see Hotaru again. Hotaru and Subaru sacrificed themselves so that Mikan and Natsume could have a happily ever. I miss Hotaru so much

I cried so much it's so sweet and pulls at all the right heart strings its one of my absolute favorites

34 D. Gray Man

This anime truly is a sad story about a boy named Allen Walker, Noah, Exorcists, and the Dark Order. I just finished it including its manga for the second time around. Sadly, what really makes this story make me have PADS for the first time is not in the anime but in the manga but truly, it is a sad story already even tou don't take account tge manga itself. Most innocence users have sadness in their pasts but the Earl and the Noah are just the same. Most of all, it does not give characters enough long peace to recover like there's only peace for one episode between depressing ten or more episodes. Its actionis not just action to destroy evil but there's sadness brought in it. It seems like even though they have powers and use Innocence to destroy Akuma, they're still human. Noahs are still humans too. For me, they're not completely evil.

Depressing and beautiful

I didn't find my self crying but...it just somehow sad how cross died and some other events like that singing doll and everything

I MEAN'T COULDN'T FORGET IT

35 Deadman Wonderland Deadman Wonderland

What? There's a difference between sad and disturbing, people. We didn't get to know Deadman Wonderland's characters enough for the terrible stuff that happened to make me feel sad. All we know about Ganta is that he had some friends and they all died. That's it. That's all we know about this kid. We know nothing about his past, we don't know anything about the relationship he had with his friends. We're given really nothing except for some 10-second Flash-Backs of Ganta looking happy in the past. Heck, we don't even see his parents once in the show. Ok, there is a scene really late in the anime where Ganta has a Flash-Back with a woman who may or may not be Ganta's mother. Also, this is a top ten for ANIME, not MANGA. If you're going to put the manga on a list put it on a top ten saddest MANGA list. Just because it has The same name as the anime doesn't make it the ANIME, as you have clearly stated that the anime and the manga are NOT the same...

Loved it, but a very sad manga!

The anime wasn't that sad but the manga is so depressing. One of my favourites

36 Mirai Nikki Mirai Nikki Future Diary is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Sakae Esuno. It depicts a battle royale in which each combatant has a diary with entries from the future.

Why is this on the list twice? This anime as pretty sad. I felt really sad for Yuno throughout the series, and the character death scenes were sad too, because you get to grow attached to a lot of them, but the thing that makes it a little less sad is that the characters come back. It would have been so sad if they hadn't

Everyone just dies. The anime first shows the person's past then kills them off. Even if they are minor characters and only appear for a short period of time. The backgrounds are quite teary.

Mirai Nikki also known a the Future diary Is the saddest thing you will ever see if you are going to watch cancel all your plans for the week because when your done you will not want to do anything just cry and rethink your life.

In English this anime is called "future diary" for those of u who didn't know and this was so tragic because everyone died in the end

37 Wolf Children

Saddest movie on earth deals.. Hana marries a wolf man and raises their two children alone after he dies. They move to the countryside as peoples in the city got suspicious of them and the children have adventures in the woods and at school and Hana had to cope up with it.

It was sad and happy at the same time, and although not an anime its still a pretty sad movie.

It wasn't that sad but you saw and were connected with the siblings connection

People this list is called Saddest Anime SERIES this doesn't count

38 Toradora

This anime shows the adventures and mishaps of Ryuji and Taiga, along with their friends. Throughout the anime you will meet confusing problems relationships, until the end which the confessions are made and tears start flowing. This anime holds a special place in my heart.

It deserves a great place on this list, sometimes its sad but, you would like to be part of that story

So amazing, the last couple episodes killed me though, many tears were shed...

My heart was torn to bits when ryuuji finally saw taiga as an equal.

This may not be this sad. But this anime is one of the few anime's the made me cry.

This was one those sad animes because you know the in the end he is dead but you want to believe he is alive

Maybe not the saddest, but one of the most awesome animes - gya

I love this one! It made me sad at the end, but other then that, it was happy.

40 Full Moon o Sagashite

I still cry every time I watch the part where she finds out Eichi had died two years ago. To think about all the times she's struggled, she thought of him and worked so hard to become famous just to see him again and it's so heart breaking to know that the person you have loved for so long had passed away without you knowing and you were way too late...

This anime was the saddest Anime I ever saw! I'm happy it was voted as one of the saddest animes because it really touches your heart. It shows life and death and how death brings apart sadly. :(( I still want a season two badly!

What first tore me to bits was the fact that by first glance (a.K.A. the Opening), this looked like the happiest story anyone could ever imagine. Even such little things like the story of the old man and the flower were so memorable, and everything Mitsuki had to go through.. all of her wants, the only thing that she thought was worth fighting her fate for.. already left her a long time ago. And everything, from when she became truly weak, singing a song with struggle, even Takuto.. This anime was a beautiful, and don't let the opening trick you into thinking it's all cute sunshines.

I didn't watch the anime, but the manga was really sad.
