Saddest Anime Series

The Contenders: Page 5

81 Orange

It was beautifully animated and there were a lot of situations that you could relate to in real life, like losing a parent or heartache. It was a very touching anime that I would definitely watch again.

It's emotional and realistic by the end of the anime I just wanted to see the characters smile and be happy together. I read the manga and watched the anime and I cried many times. It made want to be a better friend to someone. You can feel the depression and sadness in the main protagonist. The development is slow and steady. one of my favourite series

Definitely a heart tugger. Watchers will experience a range of emotions while watching. For sure one of my favorite animes now. Great for binge watching as well, since it's short!

It's tagline is "live without regrets".

82 Hakuoki: Shinsengumi Kitan

This one was so sad.. When hijikata died fighting that oni. I really didn't see this one coming. I cried so much.. He died fighting protecting the girl he loved. It also has a lot of important deaths as well. It definitely worth watching.

WHY THIS ONE IS SO SAD. I've never cried reading a book or watching any T.V. show before... but, wow. The ending scene when all of them in their Shinsengumi uniforms appeared in the sky, I completely broke down. Best anime ever! Would totally watch again even though it broke my heart and killed all my favorite characters. Loved Hakuouki.

I loved Okita and Harada. They both cared so much for Chizuru and as much as Hijikata did. Maybe more. But Heisuke and Sannan's deaths were so tragic...and Saito's death was very sad...everything was emotional.

So sad. I hated Okita's death the most...it is so upsetting to me.

83 Kimi ga Nozomu Eien

This is definitely a more grown up anime. This is what real life is like... Betrayal, Heartbreak, Difficult Choices, Divorce, Moving On, and Regret. This is why it is so far down the list. For anyone over 25 I promise this would be in the top 10 easily. Just my opinion though.

Definitely one of the saddest, if not the saddest I saw, I think with more views, it could be the top 10 easily

Emotionally potent through and through, not just at the ending. Everybody loses in this story.

I cried for days after watching it. Whenever I remember this story my heart aches.

This show is terrible how did it end up here the animation is so bad the ost is so bad the characters are so boring and so stupid it is a CHORE to WATCH /WHY/ is it on here

84 Golden Time

Here we find a story of true love and struggle. It's an anime that cast a veil over the problems the character faced, throwing off the cloth as the conflicts arose and made you try to challenge them with the characters. Just when you see the light it's brought crashing down again and before the end of the anime you see the end coming, but like with everything else the writers of the anime covered the resolution with a cloth, and used it to perform a magic trick that struck the hearts and minds of everyone watching. You just can't help but crying over this anime, not because it's too awfully upsetting or unpredictable, but because you sympathize with the characters, see their perspectives, and know their pain. You're like the rabbit the writers pulled out of the hat, watching the magicians as they make you believe you know everything but then twisting your perceptions until you can't stand it and break down.

Who is the writer of the series I want to write something to him or her

I think it was so sad

Golden Time is one of the best anime I've ever watched, the opening is so good, the ending as well,it is a must watch anime!

85 Sword Art Online II Sword Art Online II Sword Art Online II is the second season of the Sword Art Online anime series, produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Tomohiko Ito. It is divided into the "Phantom Bullet", "Calibur" and "Mother's Rosario" arcs.

I think this counts as part of Sword Art Online itself as well, so let's just count SAO II as part of SAO. That would make things better. But still, both seasons were sad.

Come on this anime is even more emotional than SAO why is it not even in top 10

It was a very sad ending.

The ending is so sad... I'm not one to cry but besides antel beats this got me GOOD.. I ended up bawling when _____ died (i wont spoil it for anyone who hasnt seen it)

86 Kyoukai no Kanata

This is the saddest anime out there. The emotions are so well balanced. They have happy moments. Funny moments sad moments and bittersweet moments that will make you want more. I've watched this anime several times and each time I cry at the end. It is well paced, short and you WILL fall in love with the main characters. If you haven't watched this anime, then you don't know what good anime is!

I just finished watching this and let me tell you, I cried harder than I did when I watched Angel Beats. This is heart-breaking, heart-warming, and it makes me want to rip my hair out sometimes. I'm so happy I came across this anime

I can't believe this anime isn't in the top 15 or top 20 at least. This anime is very awesome and made me cry and happy. This is one of my favorite anime and I won't forget this. I recommend all the viewers to watch this and hope for a continuation!

Spoiler alert:
The series itself is really sad, I just hate how they make everything O.K. In the movie.

87 School-Live!

The fact that the main character is insane, and everybody else is actually dead, REALLY made me feel... Kinda weird. I didn't really feel bad but I kinda felt empathy... Its weird.. I totally recommend this anime to anyone who's willing to sit through gore and the godforsaken FEELS

This anime is sad in an odd way. The pure denial of the main character is painful to watch. The thing that got me most was episode 3, as she sees everything she knows destroyed around her and just breaks down and goes off the deep end. Even the other characters would go insane if it wasn't for Yuuki's cheerful attitude and complete denial of reality. Also, Taromaru.

The plot is good.. The emotions in the series is mixed like first u get happiness then sadness then frustrated then annoyed.. Would recommend this

88 Death Parade Death Parade Death Parade is a 2015 Japanese anime television series created, written, and directed by Yuzuru Tachikawa and produced by Madhouse.

Honestly I didn't expect to cry in this anime. It's so heart-wrenching and very interesting anime out there. This makes you question about life, what would be the impact of your death to others, your loved ones and to yourself. This anime sprung its arrow to my heart and it shove very very deep. It makes you question about how valuable your life and I really recommend to watch this anime.

It was so said that I was unable to think of anything else for months... It is about how your mysteries of life will solve after you die on the basis of memories to decide hell or heaven... must watch before you die, I can bet you will lest cry twice

It is one of the saddest anime's I've watched to far every episode is sad but it's also somewhat beautiful the last episode is probably the saddest one for me

I just finished it about 5 minutes ago and I must say THIS IS THE SADDEST ANIME I HAVE EVER SEEN! I cried every episode but the last three did me in big time

89 Kiznaiver

This anime makes you wish others felt your sadness. It makes you wish that you weren't the only one feeling the pain so it doesn't hurt as much. Watching the character development will slowly tear you down when something bad happens. It truly makes you feel as though you are one of the Kiznaivers.

rip

This is the first ever anime to make me cry (besides Your Lie in April). Despite all the humour and drama, the (oh! spoiler! ) tenth episode is sure to hit the spot on anyone's heart and kill them (emotionally, not literally). Some may say this is similar to Kokoro Connect, but I'd say this is an original in every way.
What happens in this anime affects not only the characters deeply, but the audience too (and even to the same extent as the characters)

90 Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no shichinin

Rainbow is very underrated. I think this anime deserves top 10. It's very dark and it's very realistic. SPOILER!
It's not like "one episode the main character dies and everything goes worse" yes the main character Sakuragi dies but that not the only thing that makes this anime sad. It has some parts of real life and you can feel the sadness. Everything in this anime is realistic. The characters, the things that happen and this makes he series sadder, I think. I cried like every episode. People YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS ANIME IF YOU LOVE SAD THINGS. This anime gave me so many things that I can't explain. The drama in this anime is real, the lessons the anime gave to you is real. You can cry and learn a lot of things from this anime.

This is the saddest and warmest feeling of an anime you'll ever get
The group of boys who join together in a delinquent reformatory camp and protect themselves from the harsh abuse. the tragedy of each and every single one of their lives. their close bonds and the murder of the brother. WILL LEAVE YOU CRYING, NO DOUBT

Rainbow is the saddest anime I have ever seen. This anime is truly amazing. It deserves 1. Just watch it.

Seriously, I discover it thanks to the opening, but it's just incredible how much I cry. The characters were so touching, I was just horrified seeing all what happened to them!
It's a beautiful and crual story, very real, with true feelings, and that's why it's so amazing, and why, if you want to cry a lot, you can go to see it.
Rainbow it's a long Grave of Fireflies.

91 Romeo X Juliet Romeo X Juliet Romeo × Juliet is an anime TV series, loosely based on William Shakespeare's classical play, Romeo and Juliet, along with numerous references and characters from other Shakespearean plays.

Such a breathtaking twist on William Shakespeare's beloved tragedy. I fell in love with the characters and it's the only version of the story that has ever made me cry

Yes I loved this anime so much and the story to, The Ending I couldn't forget! So sad it changed me, the ending... I couldn't all take all theses feels at once! :(

A love made in heaven. When something complicated becomes awesome!

Short, yet heart-wrenching. You'll fall in love with the characters and story. By the end, you'll be a crying mess.

92 Cowboy Bebop Cowboy Bebop Cowboy Bebop is a 1998 anime television series animated by Sunrise featuring a production team led by director Shinichirō Watanabe, screenwriter Keiko Nobumoto, character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, mechanical designer Kimitoshi Yamane, and composer Yoko Kanno.

I was able to vote for this twice? COWBOY BEBOP FOREVER!

This anime is just a pure masterpiece, a masterpiece who a few will understand what it really is...

Surely better than elfen lied, that is if you are an adult!

Actually placed too low on this list

93 Hetalia: Axis Powers

Don't blame me for placing a vote in hetalia, really I know it's a comedy and that there's only a few sad episodes. To say the truth, I know that the anime actually isn't that sad but if you just think about it, then it can be really sad. If you think about it you'll realize that even some of the minor characters have so,etching sad about them. After all let's take Austria and Switzerland, they used to be such good friends almost like brothers, but now? Holy Roman Empire and Joan of the arc and Americas storage were kinda sad but even without being in the fandom just thinking about it might help you realize something else

Sure hetalia is an comedy anime but admit it some of the episodes are actually pretty sad, Americas storage room is one example. If you think of the fact that Holy Roman Empire died it also makes you want to cry I mean like he and Italy kissed and then he just went?! You kidding me?!?!?!? Yea theirs this possibility that Germany is Holy Roman Empire, but think again, if your first love died and later forgot about you not to mention that you never notice...doesn't that make it sadder?!?! Plus it doesn't change the fact that the Italy doesn't know that Germany is Holy Roman Empire. So yea overall hetalia may be an really funny anime and would be the first anime I would recommend if someone asked for comedy but it is still really sad if you give it some thought

I love Hetalia but I don't see why it's on the list. Hetalia can only truly be sad if you get in the fandom and look at it as more than a show. Some episodes can be sad, like America's storage room cleaning and when HRE left, but unless you read the headcanons and see the characters as people in a way, then it appears to be pretty cheerful. I guess this is just the case with most animes though.

Aiyaa four thousand years is a character song by china. Just listen to it and you'll understamd what pain china felt and how much he loved japan.

94 Hybrid Child

This is one of the most beautifully tragic anime's I have seen in a while. It left me crying for the remainder of the evening after watching... ALL THE FEELS! Every episode leaves you feeling a different emotion... And it follows the manga to perfection. It is a must see anime!

I don't know how you couldn't cry watching this. I've been crying for 30 minutes just thinking about it and when I watched Hybrid Child, I cried all day.

It shows different kinds of love It should be at least at the 50

This made me cry all night!

95 Oreimo

This anime is not really sad but it is a bit because in the end the main protagonist kyousuke some other girls in the series are in love with him but kyousuke developed feelingsfor his sister (pretty much incest but good plot of the story don't judge) all the girls who like him and confessed he rejected them all just to be with his sister it's pretty sad because his childhood friend likes him but he rejected her the girl kyousuke has been dating for a while they liked each other but he broke up with her in the end which she ends up crying

Should of chosen Ayase instead of his little sister! That alone makes me cry myself to sleep. Saddest anime ever.

96 Little Busters! Refrain

It featured such an unexpected turn of events! The characters are developed so well that when they are gone, you feel like something is missing. The last few episodes made me cry like a baby!

Its getting dark and dramatic, second season of little busters the truth unveil and a tragedy happen. It's really sad.

This is pretty much like Clannad After Story is to Clannad. The final plot and 200x sadder.

Little busters refrain is not popular but a very good anime. It's about friendship and love. Believe me it is as good as angel beats. It also teach that the life is worth living and we should enjoy it with our friends. When I was four I watched dbz, deltora quest and beyblade but I thought they were cartoons, when I turned 11 I watched little busters refrain on animax and I realized a cartoon can't have so many feels then I googled it and came to know the fact about anime

97 Sora no Otoshimono SS3

First impressions of this anime may seem to be a bit inappropriate, but keep watching, any getting to know the characters will definitely lead to tears by the end of season 1.

It's really heartwarming to see a character grow and develops to love someone even though she's supposed to have no emotions and because she's like a robot.

98 Saikano: The Last Love Song on This Little Planet

The ending is tragic, it totally made me cry. It definitely has its good moments. The sacrifice and the love is intense

Even the Characters not really grow during that short series and even it has quite a few years on its back, watching it the first time the ending just rips you apart and stucks in your mind forever

Man that was so depressing that I couldn't get out of my bed for a week :D

99 Dusk Maiden of Amnesia

The actual ending was sad, but the lead up to it made me weep, and I mean a lot...for the first time in all the animes I've seen. Though the ending completely retcons the other thing

The ending was really sad, I cried my ass off.

100 Kotoura-san

The intro to the series was very sad, as it moves on it begins to get funny, but once all of the character development between family and friends get together you will cry

This anime made me cry and laugh.

In this anime you will cry, it is sad but extremely funny. you bond to the characters and you really feel what they feel.
