As the episode begins D.W. finds her pet bird Spanky isn't moving and takes him to her dad telling him Spanky won't wake up, dad delivers the bad news that Spanky is dead which devestates D.W. as she cries out that she doesn't want Spanky to be dead as the Read family hold a funeral for Spanky in the backyard.
After Mrs. MacGrady is diagnosed with cancer Francine becomes incredibly worried about her mostly because her grandfather died from cancer, Binky giving her Lance Armstrong's email address so she can write to him since he too was diagnosed with cancer before getting better as she writes to him telling him how afraid she is for Mrs. MacGrady.
After D.W. and Arthur overhear their parents arguing with one another they become incredibly fearful that the argument could leave their parents splitting up, their family being torn apart or possibly neither one of them wanting them forcing them to live on their own at one point they imagine themselves living alone along with Kate and Pal and despite trying to make the best of things end up missing their parents as D.W. tearfully says to Arthur "I never knew you could feel this lonely, even if your not alone" it all turns out to be a simple misunderstanding.
Arthur's dog Pal gets sick and they sent him to the vet where he has to stay there overnight leaving the two apart not knowing if Pal will be all right as Arthur is left incredibly depressed not making things any better is D.W. who acts incredibly insensitive towards Arthur's feeling with her saying now they can get a new dog and later brings up about her pet Spanky who died in a previous episode which which causes Arthur to whimper in a very unsettling way before calling out to mom.
Arthur is given the bad news that Buster is going to be staying with his dad for a long time, as Buster is driven away by his mom the two share a final goodbye as Arthur is left alone and sulks about his best friend being gone.
During this special Arthur finds himself 4 years in the future where he finds everyone has aged while he remains the same with D.W. now older then him and now going by Dorra and Kate is no longer a baby, at first Arthur starts to look up to D.W.and thinks the world of her but as the special goes on he learns that she doesn't want to spend any time with him and later realizes that he's doing the same with Kate.
After falling asleep while taking the bus to his swimming lessons Arthur ends up lost downtown with no idea of where he is nor does he have enough money to take the bus back home meanwhile back home his parents and D.W. get a call from a man from the pool saying he never made it to his swimming lessons which leaves mom completely hysterical as how most parents would react to hearing that their child is missing.
Muffy and Francine get into an argument after Muffy gets upset when Francine is unable to come to her Christmas party despite Francine telling her time and time again that she can't go because of Hanukkah and ends up offending her telling her that Hanukkah isn't as important as Christmas, despite getting a whole bunch of Christmas presents the one thing she wants more then anything in the world is to have Francine back as her friend as she laments about it.
Buster returns to Elwood City after being gone for a long time and despite being happy that he's back he also notices that a lot of things happened while he was away and starts to feel left out as he missed out on a lot things Arthur and his friends experienced even worse almost everyone starts distancing themselves from him thinking that he's changed since going around the world and now thinks he's a total snob, Arthur convinces everyone to throw a welcome back party for him but end up forgetting to invite him and go to his house to invite him personally.
In the episode Francine outgrows her old bike and since her parents can't afford a new bike for her her dad gives her his old bike and after that everyone begins making fun of her new bike and feeling embarrassed she hides it in some bushes and when she returns the next day she finds it getting thrown away in the garbage truck and when everyone questions her about her bike she lies and says it was stolen leading to all her friends to wonder who took her bike things get out of hand as Muffy accuses Binky of stealing it until she confesses that she threw it away but the real tearjerker is when her father finds out since he literally works at the dump and finds the bike though he's not made he's incredibly disappointing in her as she explains everything about why she threw the bike away thankfully the episode does have a happy ending as they fix up the bike.
After the fire at the school, on a day Arthur's father was there catering a teacher's luncheon, Arthur spent nearly the entire rest of the episode fretting every time his father would leave the house.
