Saddest Rock Songs of All TimeTop ten songs that are really sad and make you cry.
The Top Ten
This song, along with, Daddy by Korn, was the only song that had made me feel as sad as I had ever. Such a personally written piece in which people or substances have wronged someone.
One of the best love songs ever written. - Userguy44
Lyrics just hit me when I heard it. Can't describe it in words. Just hit me real hard, the moments when it sends a shiver down your spine, that's a great moment. I wish I could listen to it again for the first time
Easily one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Corey Taylor is truly a lyrical genius.
I love this song - adawddwadaw
Whoever said garbage is a disrespectful bastard
Best Green Day song, and has a reason to be number one on this list, when his dad died, after the funeral he sat in his room and said wake me up when September ends to his mom
It's exactly how one feels when loosing your love...it's all there..
The song is about loosing your true love forever, And the depression that follows the breakup. A Very relatable topic for a lot of people I think. That why this should be in the top 10. Also pearl jam is so influential to modern rock bands today. The people who listen to pearl jam would know that black should be ranked high on any.list like this, the song is a classic!
Why can't it be, why can't it be mine
There shouldn't even be a question that this should be on the list. When I think emotional rock songs, this one is the one that pops into my head.
This is so sad can we get 500 likes?
It's not just the suicidal lyrics that make it so meaningful, but the instrumentality of the song is very sad and depressing. Also the screaming of Matt at his last chorus is so... Painful to listen to. It's so agonizing and dreadful, along with the haunting sounds in the background. Oh yeah, and the guitar riffs are depressing too. - Wannabeguy513
It's so sad. I heard about this and I Won't See You Tonight Part 2 because of my boyfriend.
Part 1 I relate to, I've self harmed (one month clean, very proud) I've considered suicide and have almost attempted several times.
Part 2 does have screaming but I can relate to that one, especially after losing my friend to suicide. There has not been a time where I heard either part and didn't cry.
It's one of the saddest songs I know.
This is just a perfect break up song with awesome drums and vocals... 'The Rev' you'll always be with us
This is my favorite Metallica song and by far a very sad and depressing song
I personally think "fade to black" was sadder.
This song has very sad climate, but also tells a sad, but beautiful and painful story about growing up and getting older and trying to satisfy everybody except yourself. It's not just a sad rock song, but also a lesson.
Fade to Black has much sadder lyrics but the tempo speeds so I understand that it's not up.
Shinedown's Call Me can connect with someone who has had a lot of good and bad experiences in their life, myself being one of them. It talks about having to leave close ones behind, such as family or close friends by simply moving apart from each other or even death. It could symbolize for a soldier the moment they have to leave everything behind in order to go on deployment. It is one about separation from those who you have long loved or were close to and still are or desire to be. This connects with me because many times I have had to leave close friends, neighbors or even my passed dog who have made a long lasting impact. I can't thank Shinedown enough for this song, for I can't describe the connection it has with me. Whenever I hear it, I can honor those who have made me who I am today, who I had to leave. I highly recommend this song.
It's so meaningful to me.
Makes me think of my friends. We have our differences, but we love eachother the same.
I think this is really sad, it made me cry the first time I heard it. Please, being this to #1
Cooper revealed it is about a young couple struggling with feelings of regret after an abortion. He retold this story and further explained his intent in writing the song in an Air interview posted on Skillet's official website. Skillet - Lucy Story Behind The Song. This is the great Song - payjo73
This is such an amazing song, it really makes you think, its sad but at the same time its peaceful. It's so beautiful.
Still to this day I can't watch the video to this song.
I miss the rev. He added so much to the band and now he is gone. He soul will live on in our hearts. Rest in piece the rev.
This deserves to be number 1 in my opinion. It was written after the drummer of Avenged Sevenfold, the Rev, died. It is very deep and has true meaning, and is very personal. The members even said, it's basically like a person talking to his best friend, telling him he misses him. It's the saddest song I've ever heard, and one of the most powerful.
I cry every time I listen to this song.
Most of five finger death punch's songs are very violent but this one is one of there slow and touching songs
While most of Five Finger Death Punch's songs are upbeat and violent, this song is so sad, and I always feel like crying when I hear it.
"All the places I've been and things I've seen. A million stories that made up a million shattered dreams."
Truely a touching song
I cried when I first heard this song. It is so emotional.
It makes me tear up when he says "the faces of people, I'll never see again"
Always brings tears in my eyes. It's so beautiful! - Userguy44
My immortal is a very sad and emotional song and is very touching and is a song you must hear
I listen to this song when I need to cry but can't and it gets the job done every tine. Its heart breaking and soulful and brings me to tears every time I hear it I love it
This song is by far the best enchanted song that throws you in a dark bottomless pit of pain and suffering. A true tear commander!
Masterfully written. Just the tone of the guitar and vocals can bring emotion out but the lyrics bring it over the top. Layne brought his heart right to the surface here.
It's likely that this is about going through life's path: "We face the path of time," and believing things that aren't true at some point of our lives: "We chase misprinted lies." It is also saying that at one point or another, you could wind up without any friends: "And yet I fight, and yet I fight this battle all alone. No one to cry to, no place to call home." You will have to do some things in life without any guidance. - A7XREVFin21
My favorite song ever written. A song about loneliness and depression, with the perfect blend of music and lyrics. You can feel the pain in Layne Stanley's voice.
This is by far the most saddest song I have ever song. It made me cry the first time I heard it
Only song which made me cry like a bitch.
My mom passed away last year, this makes me cry every time I listen to it. And if you look at the lyrics and listen to her voice, you'll see why I cry when I hear it.
By far saddest song I have heard from rock/metal genre, made me cry so many times and still continues to do so.
This song says it all. True emotion, power, and message. The guitar solo shared between Kennedy and Tremonti is just absolutely the best composed and ever played. True Songwriting at its best.
Most underrated song I've ever seen
Black bird is hard rock at its very best... It's a shame people haven't even heard of it... It's outburst of emotions... Its about a friend who passed away long time ago... Total masterpiece
Written for a past away friend... "Someday I too will fly and find you again"
This song is just so soft and meaningful. its just so easy to relate to it
This song is a perfect sonic representation for the hurt Trent was feeling and the hurt of the millions who have heard it.
This song is such a clear representation of the singer's self-hatred that it gives me chills every time I hear it. Johnny Cash's version is also beautiful. Should definitely be number one.
This song deserves to be at the top, gets you right there
This song is about the self-loathing you have in a breakup. It's when you realize it may be your fault and you lost the best thing in your life... - Ornsmoughstein
If you listen to this song, you just have to break down. Emotions are floating all around you.
This song is anbout self-hating and a massive depression...Whenever I listen to this song all my emotions are around me...It is a perfect song when I want to calm down after a bad day
I always listen by heart this song cause I'm broken.
Definitely top 10 worthy
No way does this song deserv to be out of the top 10!
I was listening to this song as I was writing my last love letter to my now ex. She was probably one of the only things in my life that ever made me actually happy. Whenever I hear this song, I think of her.
I love this song so much, it is always a go to song for me but I'd listen to anytime too.
This song must be in top 10. Great lyrics and Great song!
This is my all time favorite song though I'm not a fan of 3 doors down
The saddest solo
This one is supposed to be in the top 10
Simply the best power balad of all times!
Best G&R song of all time
Should be much higher in my opinion but maybe it's just cause Cornell is my favourite musician of all time, RIP brother gone too soon
Beautiful song with deep lyrics. I recommend it - KingSlayer93316
It's a beautiful song that's perfectly listenable, but man, the feels.
I don't know how this one isn't higher, gets me in my feels whenever I listen to it.
More dark than sad
It is sad because it is about a soldier during the First World War who stepped on a land mine and he is taken to the hospital. He will never recover from his coma leaving him a prisoner in his own body.
When it comes to sad metal songs how can people forget about Metallica's masterpiece fade to black?!
Best song ever, sadder than the un forgiven if you take into account the story behind it
When you've lost all faith and your empty. "Powermetal at its best". An absolute classic
Just the BEST voice around here...
Lead singer M. Shadows says that the song is about thinking twice about your actions. It's about "Seizing the Day," keeping those you love close because everything can be gone in two minutes. - A7XREVFin21
It delivers a positive message in a sad and powerful song...The way it expresses the feelings is unique...It deserves higher place for sure
Sad and Beautiful song
I prefer the G N R version but through respect ITS BY BOB DYLAN JESUS
This song brings about a flood of tears. Don't try listening to it in public. The lyrics, the music and the vocals are all very moving. It will make you mourn the loss of a loved one, a mentor, a friend or miss any good times from your past. I listen to it whenever I feel the need to cry and release any suppressed emotions.
This is a beautiful song that lead guitarist Mark Tremonti wrote for his mother after she passed away. It breaks your heart, but it is about never forgetting your loved ones and missing them. Every now and then I listen to this song and think of my loved ones that have passed on. Truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
This should be in higher in this list
This song is the summary of everything that mark tremonty could feel when he lost his mother, that everyone could feel when we lost someone
I miss all these songs. In my opinion, 1999-2010 had the best rock music. Not to put off the classics. You know what I mean. Modern rock wise.
I think this sounds like what sadness sounds like when you channel your pain and sadness into feeling like a "boss" I guess is the best way I could explain it, instead of embracing the pain and sadness. I tend to do this a lot, it's like a coping mechanism for extreme depression. That's why a huge amount of heavy metal songs and rock songs in general are very depressing, because when you listen to depressing metal, you feel empowered. It makes it easier to bare with the pain when you feel "epic", if you get what I mean.
It's not even the saddest Avenged Sevenfold song, So Far Away & Seize The Day are much sadder - Xinferno-awaitsX
It just make me feel so down, every time I hear it
Very sad but also beautiful - xkill
When I heard this on the radio it made me thing about my past and is a song you can relate to
This song reminds me about my past listen to this song to understand your life.
By far the saddest song of all time
I am in high school and I am going through a very tough part in my life right now and this song is very sad, my way of getting over saddness is listening to sad songs and this song I could very well relate too..
This song is just plain sad
I just love it dude, it makes me more sadder than snuff
"Vermilion Pt. 2" is believed to be about an unrequited love interest from the first part of "Vermilion." Part 2 is much softer, and the video hints that the woman in the first video is now dead. - A7XREVFin21
Honestly, if more popular songs had been on Vol. 3, this song might be more respected than snuff for being truly sad
Way sadder than snuff but danger keep away is another level
Saw the video to this with the missing kids... unbelievably powerful..."a little out of touch a little insane...it's just easier than dealing with the pain"... outstanding
Great song. - Userguy44
I like this song. Soul Asylum put a lot of meaning into this song, in my opinion - KingSlayer93316
This song doesn't go full-on rock, and even the guitar solo sounds depressing
Very sad yet beautiful. Vocal performance was not from this planet! - Userguy44
Both heartbreaking and defiant at the same time. - truckturner
It's ridiculously sad when you think of the condition Freddie Mercury was in when writing this. He was near death, and this was his way of saying goodbye, along with who wants to live forever and these are the days of our lives
Always cry when listen it.
One of the most beautiful songs ever created. It tugs at the heart. Every time I listen to it, I feel again.
Very sad and very beautiful - Metal_Treasure
There's something I find deeply disturbing about the lyrics and composition, but I don't know what.
The part when Freddie says "i don't want to die, sometimes wish I've never been born at all" is a really strong and sad message in the song, and when he says "mamma oooh" it sounds like he is crying.
Not sad at all lol
Such an underrated song
Yeah this one but where is Never too late by Three Days Grace though?
Pleading with illness, could even relate to loss. "Faceless enemy" you can't really fight an enemy if it doesn't have a mind or will to fight against. When helpless, we go to pleading.
Very beautiful and sad
Really feel this song. Definitely in my top 10.
Lead singer Corey Taylor wrote this song to express his outrage and dissatisfaction with what he perceives to be the artificiality of the music industry, and the hypocrisy of the celebrity life. - A7XREVFin21
Through Glass is a song about slowly fading away into the unknown.. Where your friends or family become distant, and you are left wondering why it couldn't be like the good old days. I can highly relate, and highly recommend through glass by stone sour.
I litterally cryed when I heard this song its so sad you need to listen to this
There are other very sad songs from Pink Floyd but this one is a true masterpiece and should be at least in the top 5. Rest In Peace Syd.
This should be waay higher on the list
I'm disappointed that this song not at least in the top 3. If you don't know what this song is about (or the whole album), it's about the founding member of Pink Floyd, Syd Barret, who lost everything. This happened after he started doing drugs.. when his lost himself. He eventually left the band, lost his fame, his money, his friends, his family, and himself. When the band started to write the album tributing him, Syd Barret showed up on set. When he did this, he was not recognized. This is because he was now fat and bald. This obviously made a big impact on the band (and me). Imagine, losing your greatest friend and not even being able to recognize him because he lost everything.
Seriously? this song deserves much better rating, it should be on the top 5
This is my favorite Metallica Song. Whenever I listen to it, I think about the lyrics and how deep they are. This is really an amazing song - Life_Death
This song was actually written in memorium of James' stolen amp in which his deceased mother originally brought him. I don't mean to sound like a jerk or anything from this, look it up.
A song about suicide. Depicts a person who has lost everything and cannot find a reason to live anymore. Their personality has changed for the worse and they have become completely nihilistic.
James wrote this when the theft of Metallica's equipment, especially his beloved amp which was given to him by his late mother, caused him to become depressed.
The song is about wondering if this life is worth living and wishing to be dead. In the last 2 verses the person in the song realizes life is too good to let go, but by that time, its too late: "No one but me, can save myself but its too late."
Metallica wrote this after their equipment was stolen in early '84 and they had to start all over again. More specifically, James Hetfield wrote the lyrics in response to one of his amps being stolen. Not only was this amp his favorite, but it was also the first amp he ever owned so it had a lot of sentimental value to him. The song is about losing everything and wondering if it is worth going on. - A7XREVFin21
This song cuts to the core of someone who's been hurt and is just done being stepped on to the point of turning hurtful. I get it
