Top Shredders of All Time

Throughout the years, many things define a great guitarist. Here, guitarists are defined only by their speed. Who's the fastest? You decide.

the best

Melodic, groove, orgasm for ears, just the best guitarist ever

90 Greg Howe

Not very well known, but he has some amazing technique as well as speed.

91 Bill Steer Bill Steer

He should have already been on this list so I will add him. Steer is not only a shredder. He plays with so fast with absolute precision. He has pioneered much of what other guitarist are doing and plays to perfection in a variety of genres (not just death metal). Bill Steer is the epitome of the ideal guitarist.

Bill Steer should be NUMBER 1. He has played some killer guitar in Carcass, early Napalm Death, his own Firebird, Gentleman's Pistols, and Angel Witch. To watch him solo is something to behold and to see him shred is mind-blowing. A privilege to watch play live.
The ultimate guitarist. Is there anything he can't do?

92 Alex Skolnick Alex Skolnick Alexander Nathan Skolnick, is an American metal and jazz guitarist who is the lead guitarist of the Bay Area thrash metal band Testament, and heads the jazz band Alex Skolnick Trio.
93 Bobby Gustafson
94 Gary Holt Gary Holt
95 Matthew Jordan

Upcoming south african guitarist. He has been playing for under 1 year and can fluently play yngwie malmsteen songs with ease. The futures fastest shredder.

96 Tony Iommi Tony Iommi Anthony Frank "Tony" Iommi is an English guitarist, songwriter and producer. Best known as lead guitarist and founding member of the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath, he has been the band's sole continual member and primary composer. At age 17, he accidentally lost the fingertips of his middle more.

He is already on the list. Plus, never seen him shred.

Since when did slow picking start to known as shredding? - zxm

He's a rif making machine plus his solos are epic

97 Angus Young Angus Young Angus McKinnon Young is an Australian guitarist of Scottish origin, best known as the co-founder, lead guitarist, songwriter and sole constant member of the Australian hard rock band AC/DC. When performing live he does his own version of Chuck Berry's "duck walk" and has also spun on his side while more.

I know he's a very popular guitarist. And some may get angry with my comment but Angus Young isn't a shredder. Shredding doesn't only mean playing guitar fast. Nor only using hammer on and pull off. - zxm

Yep, he is a master showman on live stage, and while performing complex acrobatics on stage, he continues to play wicked leads and never misses a note. I'd like to see these other guitarists do what he does. Not a chance.

If There's anyone who can shred it's this guy AND he can do while running around the stage and lying on the ground etc
Has to be on this list

98 Oisin Boyd

This guy hails from Ireland... Man can he shred!

99 Steve Hackett Steve Hackett

I can only think of two guitarists who were sweep picking in the early 70's, and that's Richie Blackmore and Steve Hackett

What the hell? Steve Hackett at the bottom of the list? Some folks have no taste or a clue.

100 Frank Zappa Frank Zappa Frank Vincent Zappa was an American musician, songwriter, composer, record producer, actor and filmmaker.

People seem to forget that this guy was one of the best guitarists around during the 70s and 80s. Not to mention the complexity of his songs. If you're gonna put Lifeson and Iommi on this list, you had better put Zappa!
