Top 10 Smartest Dog Breeds
You need a SMART dog? Well here are the smartest breeds of dogs. The Top Ten

I've had both German shepherds and border collies and the German shepherd BY FAR was easier to train. Border collies may actually be labeled as more intelligent than other dogs but the shepherd is so much more attentive during training than the border collie and aims to please 24/7. What good is the collie's intelligence if they're too hyper to pay attention? German shepherd all the way!
I've heard that the German Shepard is the third smartest dog in the world. They can be trained to sniff out bombs, find missing people, and search for illegal drugs and animals that smugglers want to sell across the country. They are also great service dogs for disabled people. Even as amazing workers they are great and loyal pets that will protect you and your family for life.
Extremely smart and loyal dogs. Our uncle has one and she always has to be with him. when he goes inside, she stares at him through the glass door until he comes back. She has bonded with me a lot and one time, we went to a party and my brother brought his friend. while the GSD was looking through the door at her owner. my brothers friend tried to push me in the pool, and she lunged at him and she stared at him until he walked away.
My brother wants to own one. And I think he’s in for a dog treat! HAHAHahAhaha... they are the smartest dog ever though

Okay, this list should actually be factual. It's scientifically proven that Border Collies come in first, Poodles in second, and German Shepherds in third. And being easily trained doesn't make a dog smart. The smartest dogs need mental stimulation. If training isn't fun, they won't listen. Make it stimulating and enjoyable.
Border Collies are great and loyal dogs that are extremely intelligent! They should be number one! Despite being incredibly smart, if your looking for a smart and good looking doggy, Border Collies (in my opinion) are absolutely gorgeous! I love my Border Collie, Mac!
Border Collies have deductive reasoning skills that puts them at number one in intelligence. My Border Collie will create games for herself if given the tools (in addition to exercise.)
Border Collies are very smart sheep dogs

Golden Retrievers are so nice and they are the BEST! My neighbor had one that knew SO many tricks, and every time he saw me he would knock me down and start licking me! Awesome companion and great family dog!
They can be great and very smart dogs. I have a golden retriever, and I love him like he's my entire heart
GOLDEN RETRIVERS ARE THE BEST DOGS IN THE WORLD THEY ARE AWESOME.
They are great dogs 4 kids they are so loyal and loving and energetic they are the very very very very very best I love GOLDEN RETRIEVERS they are the best dogs in the world
They are extremely smart especially in knowing your feelings. They help you feel better and seem to feel your emotions.

I have 6 poodles. They are smarter than the neighbours 2 kids.
Openly despite what they look like they are very smart
I hate poodles, but I hear they can read, fetch credit cards, turn on and shut off lights
Poodles are actually very smart

My yellow lab can open doors (when unlocked.)! Also one time she escaped because the gate was open and we found her sitting at our front door step. Did I mention that she changed the channel for attention? - PianoQueen
I wouldn't say there the smartest dog but absolutely in the top 5 my girl jasmine is so protective over my kids but shes so lovable and will always be there for me
My lab is so smart she learnt how to sit on her first day home every day she learnt a new command and that is not an exaggeration. She just turned 4 months and know many new commands
Part of my dog, my dogs a mix.

I think Dobies, like any species of animals, can vary quite a bit in intelligence. I had one, by the name of Judy, who was phenomenal. I used her on the third shift of an Arco (in a BAD neighborhood) many years ago. She was always untethered and had the run of the office, garage bays, and a large outdoor area with 12 pumps and several flower gardens. She had access to all of that and could intermingle with customers. She knew the commands to go inside or outside of each of those areas from wherever I was at and could very quickly think on the fly.
She actually saved me from at least severe beatings twice - once when two punks came in, gave me a $5 bill, and then tried to claim they had only asked for a dollar's worth after they had gotten the gas. They both got out of the car telling me how they were going to beat me. Judy was in the office so I called her out. These guys were confident and told me "that dog isn't gonna do anything". I, then, grabbed her collar and ...more
Doberman is the best guard dog for me. Its speed could catch up an intruder for a short period of time.
I Have One And She Is Very Friendly And Smart
I heard someone rant about how the pitbull saving two women from a venomous snake is fake. And he said the "hoaxer" is stupid and even the people who believe that are stupid. I hope the person who said that dies the most horrible way ever. It's not fake! And besides, why are we stupid for believing the story. If the ranter is reading this, I just want you to know I hate you, I hope you die, I hope you fail at contests and if you do fail, I'll send a wolf to eat you in your sleep. Ok then.🐶👌
V 4 CommentsHuskies are SUPER smart dogs...but they are very independent. They have to have a purpose or reason to come to you when called. They will RUN FOREVER if not kept on a leash (which is what they were bred for) and are excellent survivalists down to -75 degree weather. They are very loving with children and visitors, so much so that they would leave with a burglar! NOT good watch dogs! Love to pull carts and sleds too. They are special dogs that need a special owner to understand them as well, as they are one of the oldest and purest breeds that have that very wolf-like mentality and characteristic.
Well I have a husky he's Is AMAZING on everything he can play so many sports too I think its just the way you see it now not every dog is perfect!
These dogs are my favorite breed and one of the smartest
Sometimes they're too smart for their own good. can open crates and hop fences to run away. Still love them

They are smart and they know exactly when your in danger so they are that smart then they attack and that's the bit where they try to kill people
Rottweiler are underrated. Rottweiler are underestimated since they seem mean from their size. They are actually smart and loving.
They are the smartest dogs I have seen and way smarter than the German shepherd.
Their sick guard dogs
V 8 CommentsCatahoula is beyond a doubt the smartest. The trick is to get them at 6 to 8 weeks old, they bond with their humans like no other breed, if you get them past 6 to 8 months old, the bond doesn't seem to be as strong. These dogs are fun and athletic, they love to work & play hard. I've had 3 in my life & all were fully trained to do all basic tricks & commands before they were 4 months old. Start training them young.
Catahoula is also known as the American Indian dog. It's the first dog of the Americas and dates back to the 1500's. They're very smart and very protective of their people. They use them to herd cattle and to hunt bear, wild hogs, and mountain lions.
I have to disagree with where a Catahoula ranks on this list. I have extensive interaction with all the breeds listed here, and the Catahoula is by far the most intelligent. The only dog that I have ever seen that can "outhink" most people. They will keep you on your toes in training them. The question here is not whether the Catahoula is the most intelligent breed, but rather "Is the Catahoula more intelligent than most people"?!
Absolutely!

These dogs should be much higher up, because they are sweet and kind, AND so trainable!
Should be much higher up! They are one of the most trainable breeds I know!
Should be up with the Collies and so very loyal. - elfman73
Great trainable dogs.
The Contenders

My Beagle had a vocabulary of over 65 words, names & commands. Knew his left from his right. New black from red playing cards. Was a great hunter and retrieved game as well. He was one smart dog. He learned people's names with one introduction...then went to the person I requested What a dog...RIP
Gerry
I don't know about other countries, but australia uses them to sniff out drugs trying to be smuggled. they don't actually consume the drugs though -
Beagles are the best there a very playful not to jumpy just right
My beagle can literally open a sealed jar of peanut butter!

I adopted a Heeler, Bordercollie mix from an animal shelter who is 2 years and 2 months old. I was very wary about the dog because I have 5 cats and 2 kids. We live on a ranch, minus the animals, well our closet neighbor has a sheep and a couple of donkeys. This is one of the smartest and sweetest dogs I have ever met! We built a special huge kennel to put the dog in when we go to work on good weather days, and the dog doesn't even pee or poop in it's kennel. The first day we brought the dog home, we unleashed it and it stays in the territory of our house. It's great with our cats and kids. It sleeps right next to me on the floor of my bed. Awesome dog!
Very smart dogs! Mine is always such a good boy and I never have to worry about him when I'm away! Within 10 minutes of adopting him, he already knew how to shake, sit, and lie down.
This dog however looks smart though he looks scary
My Aunt has one he's WAY TO OVERWEIGHT

My Papillon, Misty, short for Mysteriosa, as we did not know what she was at first., was independent from the time she was born. We had to formula feed her as her mother did not have milk. She was raised with another pup, three weeks older who was bigger, and she was very playful became the boss right away. She is twelve now, and not so playful and never lets me out of her sight. She is the oldest of five dogs, and they all are a loving family. She does not romp with the others any more, but prefers her own quiet solitary walks. We live in a small ocean community so can walk freely. She never did like a leash.
They are actually number 8 on the smart list!
I love the fact this was taken from the word "papillion" french for butterfly

My 9 month old Jack is way to smart for his own good, but a very well behave dog, loving and loyal dog.
My dog Doug, who's a jack russel, is probably the stupidest dog I have ever met. But I love him SO MUCH! - Untildawn8
I used to have one he was hyper & he also had heartworms
Ducks

Okay, I ADORE PUGS, but they are not the smartest. Smart, but not the smartest. Still voting, but I gave 2 votes to another dog. - PugLlama
Adorable and amart, pugs are!
Too cute
Most people might think that people like Pugs only because of the cute face but they are alsi very smart and loving dogs. I own a pug and if you think pugs are dumb then you probably never seen one

I think they are cute and they will growl and bark when others are in danger so that is why they are smart

Newfoundland Wahoo so intelligent without the newfie there would be NO LABS IT WOULD BE SO SAD back then they wanted to breed a smaller version of newfoundland but to make a smaller version they breeder the necks with something else I forgot
We own a Newfoundland (Landseer). She is 135 lbs, sweet, smart, and amazingly elegant and courageous. A wonderful family dog for us. Would highly recommend one for families in cooler climates with access to lakes, rivers, oceans - they LOVE water. We live near the upstate NY area.
I love Newfs. They look so dignified and smart, but when you live with them you find out they are just big goofballs! d;

Seriously? English bulldog number 19? They r one of the stupidest dogs ever
This is the by far smartest breed... okay maybe not, but they're still dope
They are the best and smartest dog in the world!
This is just sad. Bulldogs can be sweet and smart. Just like pitbulls they are harmless unless you don't train it right. Its rude to say they are owned by crackheads and dole claimer... They are not the stupidest... And yes, I agree! They are dope

Quick learners, the Shih Tzu can be whatever you want it to be. A real couch potato, or just as much love and energy for the outdoors as a big great dane!
My Shih Tzu is smarter than my Great Dane.
You'll regret your words because they do not
SHIH TZUS ARE SUPPOSE TO BE THE WORLD'S DUMBEST DOG! THEY ARE DUMB, UGLY, STUPID, PRISSY AND ANNOYING! EVERYONE VOTE FOR YORKIES, HUSKIES, GOLDEN RETRIEVERS, ANYTHING BUT A SHIH TZU! (#YorkiesRuleAndShihTzusDrool)

What is Daschund? Did you mean Dachshund? Jesus, just check the spelling if it's right before submitting it.
Smart but stubborn! Understands a lot but will only listen if there's a treat
Best ever dog
cute

Westies are very intelligent. Their keen sense of hearing saves many lives. When they hear a noise, they cock their heads to hear clearly. They understand the English language very quickly. My westie can understand many words, and not just bath and walk. They understand what happens around them, and they are very smart.
I have had two. Both very smart, the second absurdly so. They're also adorable.
Corgis are one of my favorite dog breeds. - PhilTheCorgi

This is the MOST OVERRATED BREED EVER! First, they don't even look like the picture above. Second they are certainly not inteligente at all. They are annoying barking machines, they turn their head to the side when asked to do something then turn around and ignore you. They are compleatly on a world of their own and only do whatever they feel like. They have attachment issues and can be too sensitive when ir comes to be left alone. They have a panic attack EVERY TIME YOU COME HOME! You can't wash them andown they stink ALL THE TIME! No matter if they haven't been on the mud or whatever, THEY STINK, THEY MAKE THE HOUSE STINK AND YOU ALSO STINK BECAUSE YOU CAN'T HELP IT. When you try to pet them the outside coat is rough and feels absolutely disgusting because of their natural skin oils. They aren't good looking, they aren't cute, they are simply desperate little excuse for dogs. I wish I never ever got one, seriously. I love animals and would never abandon my dof or mistreat it and ...more

THIS IS THE SMARTEST, CUTEST, EASILY TRAINABLE DOG IT SHOULD BE MOVED UP!
I agree with the other person who wrote a comment. I just want to say I had this dog, and I loved him dearly! He was VERY smart, VERY sweet, and VERY VERY VERY athletic. But sadly, he got cancer, (we amputated his leg but didn't work) so we had to put him down. It was the hardest thing that's happened to me in years.😞 I still think you should get one though and move it to at the LEAST third place... do it for me and my passed away dog... please please please.

I would like a Shiba for my birthday! They mys be great for emoitional support
I want one and I would train it to use the human toilet. Out of everyone else’s dogs, mine will be the smartest dog ever!

Whoever created this list has sadly never heard of the Wiemereinar (don't know how to spell it) which is supposed to be a very intelligent dog breed (even if my dog skipped that gene). - Anonymousxcxc

Yes, very smart. Should be higher on the list. - Blight
My maltese is very smart.
Cutest dog in the world huskys are 100000000000000 maltese and bichon frise my friend says huskies are cute well they are not bahaha

I watch a fib show that use Bassett hounds so I'm guessing there smarter than German shepherds

I have one myself and he is very smart he opens the doors he doesn't use the bathroom in the house he warns me when he needs to go and when he is hungry

They are a mix of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, which are 2 of the smartest dog breeds ever
They are super duper smart

So happy and smart. They understand so many words and are easily taught.

My wippet is the best loving fast small good with kids they are amazing

They aren't that smart but I'm commenting to you just to remember how awesome they are.
How do you think that chihuahuas are awesome I find them vicious and slightly terrifying. - Anonymousxcxc
Ok let's get this straight there are no Chihuahuas on here till now!
Best dog. Ever. They may be scary vicious, but these dogs attach themselves to one person. The person they feel safe with. With my puppy, Stuart, he attached to me (I held him first.) My old and first dog, Oscar, attached himself to my mom. Oscar hated me 😂 I have another dog named Doug (not a chihuahua) and he also attached himself to my mom. He was supposed to be my dog, but he loved my mom. So we got Stuart when Oscar passed away (RIP ❤️❤️) and, shockingly to me, he attached to me. I felt happy with him. He is my puppy, now 1 years old. Doug just turned 7 by the way :))) anyways Stuart is my BFF. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ - Untildawn8

I know, I don not own a Samoyed or really any dog but I learned so far a lot.
They do behave a bit like a Husky, they can be a little independent and be like a genius a lot of times, not necessarily the SMARTEST dog, but is smart. - GeographyMaster

I have a 2 year old puggle who knows 20+ tricks. - ChuckLaunching

Schnauzers aren't also smart but they are also so cute. Don't bet from the picture above, search them, because their moustaches are so cute, in my opinion, don't mess with me.
They are very smart
When it comes to trainability look no further. The schnauzer from German origins is an absoulute delight to train and willing to please its owner.
Schnauzer is definitely a reliable dog. to be honest, it would definitely not be the most, but it is still very reliable. I'm just feel like saying to my friend, BOOHYAH! Shnauzers are more reliable than CAVOODLES! BOOM, IN your FACE!

I got that kind of dog they are not really smart but cute
I got one like this not smart but really fast and they are gentle to people and kids, they are really a happy dog

I have one. She's pretty smart. - PositronWildhawk

These guys should be number one they are they most smart breed I have ever heard of
Its smartest not ugliest dog - elfman73
COME ON THIS DOG LITERALLY THROWS PUNCHES. definitely SMARTEST.
WOW 42 on the list this is insane boxers are way smarter than that PUGS WERE BEFORE THEM that is all I have to say for now
- a proud Boxer mom!

A beautiful, intelligent and brave dog. The first mentioned in history, in XIV century, made possible the capture of the killer of his master. Wonderful breed.

I have a 12 week old and she is the smartest puppy I've ever seen. I taught her how to sit in about 5 minutes and how to lie down in just 3 or 4 minutes. This is no exaggeration. My mom once wiped her face after she finished eating. Every time after that she ran away when she saw my mom holding the cloth. whenever I get the leash out she goes nuts. I also have a mini labradoodle and they both have there own leash. When I get them out she starts tugging on hers.
Mountain curs are super smart hunting dogs. They are easily trained and really loyal, too. One of the smartest dog breeds I know.
