21 Norfolk Terrier Norfolk Terrier The Norfolk Terrier is a British breed of dog. Prior to gaining recognition as an independent breed in 1960, it was a variety of the Norwich Terrier, distinguished from the "prick eared" Norwich by its "drop ears".
22 West Highland White Terrier West Highland White Terrier The West Highland White Terrier, commonly known as the Westie or Westy, is a Scottish breed of dog with a distinctive white coat.

Westies are very intelligent. Their keen sense of hearing saves many lives. When they hear a noise, they cock their heads to hear clearly. They understand the English language very quickly. My westie can understand many words, and not just bath and walk. They understand what happens around them, and they are very smart.

I have had two. Both very smart, the second absurdly so. They're also adorable.

23 Australian Shepherd Australian Shepherd

I agree with the other person who wrote a comment. I just want to say I had this dog, and I loved him dearly! He was VERY smart, VERY sweet, and VERY VERY VERY athletic. But sadly, he got cancer, (we amputated his leg but didn't work) so we had to put him down. It was the hardest thing that's happened to me in years.😞 I still think you should get one though and move it to at the LEAST third place... do it for me and my passed away dog... please please please.

24 Border Terrier Border Terrier The Border Terrier is a small, rough-coated breed of dog of the terrier group. Originally bred as fox and vermin hunters, Border Terriers share ancestry with Dandie Dinmont Terriers, Patterdale terriers and Bedlington Terriers.

This is the MOST OVERRATED BREED EVER! First, they don't even look like the picture above. Second they are certainly not inteligente at all. They are annoying barking machines, they turn their head to the side when asked to do something then turn around and ignore you. They are compleatly on a world of their own and only do whatever they feel like. They have attachment issues and can be too sensitive when ir comes to be left alone. They have a panic attack EVERY TIME YOU COME HOME! You can't wash them andown they stink ALL THE TIME! No matter if they haven't been on the mud or whatever, THEY STINK, THEY MAKE THE HOUSE STINK AND YOU ALSO STINK BECAUSE YOU CAN'T HELP IT. When you try to pet them the outside coat is rough and feels absolutely disgusting because of their natural skin oils. They aren't good looking, they aren't cute, they are simply desperate little excuse for dogs. I wish I never ever got one, seriously. I love animals and would never abandon my dof or mistreat it and ...more

25 Labradoodle Labradoodle A labradoodle is a crossbreed dog created by crossing the Labrador Retriever and the Standard, Miniature or Toy Poodle.

Whoever created this list has sadly never heard of the Wiemereinar (don't know how to spell it) which is supposed to be a very intelligent dog breed (even if my dog skipped that gene). - Anonymousxcxc

26 Pembroke Welsh Corgi
27 St. Bernard St. Bernard The St. Bernard or St Bernard is a breed of very large working dog from Swiss Alps and north Italy and Switzerland, originally bred for rescue.
28 Lhasa Apso Lhasa Apso The Lhasa Apso is a non-sporting dog breed originating in Tibet. It was bred as an interior sentinel in the Buddhist monasteries, to alert the monks to any intruders who entered.

I have one myself and he is very smart he opens the doors he doesn't use the bathroom in the house he warns me when he needs to go and when he is hungry

They aren't that smart but I'm commenting to you just to remember how awesome they are.

How do you think that chihuahuas are awesome I find them vicious and slightly terrifying. - Anonymousxcxc

36 Samoyed Samoyed

I know, I don not own a Samoyed or really any dog but I learned so far a lot.
They do behave a bit like a Husky, they can be a little independent and be like a genius a lot of times, not necessarily the SMARTEST dog, but is smart. - GeographyMaster

37 Dogue de Bordeaux (French Mastiff)
38 Briard Briard The Briard is an ancient breed of large herding dog, originally from France. A Briard-type dog appears in Gaston Febus' Livre de chasse, written in the 14th century.

I have a 12 week old and she is the smartest puppy I've ever seen. I taught her how to sit in about 5 minutes and how to lie down in just 3 or 4 minutes. This is no exaggeration. My mom once wiped her face after she finished eating. Every time after that she ran away when she saw my mom holding the cloth. whenever I get the leash out she goes nuts. I also have a mini labradoodle and they both have there own leash. When I get them out she starts tugging on hers.

40 Mountain Cur

Mountain curs are super smart hunting dogs. They are easily trained and really loyal, too. One of the smartest dog breeds I know.
