Patricia Lee "Patti" Smith is an American singer-songwriter, poet, and visual artist who became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses.
I have a question... why is Patti Smith regarded as punk? Owning her first five albums, I don't know any song by her that remotely sounds like punk, neither original punk like Sex Pistols nor pop punk. Nina Hagen's original style had several other influences and was more complex than punk, but she nevertheless had a revolting attitude, sang in a very shrieking and nasty way and the overall tone was a musical raised middle finger so I get why is regarded as punk, but I don't know that from Patti Smith to be honest. She's more folk and then became New Wave. - Martin_Canine
