Top 10 Songs that Contain Rarely Used Words

This is for songs that contain words seldom used either in songs or just in general. Please avoid using made up words. The song does not have to have odd lyrics in general but most of my examples do. Feel free to add others.

The Top Ten

1 We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel (Hypodermics) We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel (Hypodermics) Cover Art

Better known for the many famous people mentioned I decided to avoid those because many other songs mention famous people even if not as many. In case anyone doesn't know a Hypodermic is the needle that doctors use to inject people. - Powell

2 Love Runs Out - OneRepublic (Mephistopheles) Love Runs Out - OneRepublic (Mephistopheles) Cover Art

Mephistopheles is a devil in German folklore and has been used in some later stories. - Powell

I know but like most of these songs that one just has unusual lyrics in general so I used another word from it. - Powell

3 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (Bismillah) Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen (Bismillah) Cover Art

Bismillah is a phrase that means "in the name of god" in Arabic.

4 Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (Mulatto) Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (Mulatto) Cover Art

"A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido" 4 unusual words to have but I decided to go with the first one. A mulatto is a person with mixed black and ancestry. - Powell

I don't feel like that's enough to say they are truly commonly used. I think they are all more rare than the most unusual word that would be used in an average song. - Powell

5 Good for You - Selena Gomez (Syncopate) Good for You - Selena Gomez (Syncopate) Cover Art

Perhaps the most normal song lyrically on this list but still the intro is kind of strange as well. Syncopate has a couple meanings but to be honest neither makes sense in the song. - Powell

6 I Am the Walrus - The Beatles (Hare Krishna) I Am the Walrus - The Beatles (Hare Krishna) Cover Art

A Hare Krishna is a Hindu religious figure. I am pretty sure that it isn't supposed to mean anything in the context of the song given that none of the lyrics of this song really make sense.

OBEY THE WALRUS

7 The Sound - The 1975 (Epicurean) The Sound - The 1975 (Epicurean) Cover Art

This refers the philosophy of Epicurus. It involved the belief that

"the greatest good was to seek modest, sustainable pleasure in the form of a state of
ataraxia (tranquility and freedom from fear) and aponia (the absence of bodily pain) through knowledge of the workings of the world and limiting desires. The combination of these two states constitutes happiness in its highest form." - Powell

8 Loser - Beck (Butane) Loser - Beck (Butane) Cover Art

A lot of the lyrics are weird in this song actually but I picked this one. Butane is a chemical consisting of Carbon and Hydrogen (C4 H10). Like several other Hydrocarbons it is useful as a fuel. - Powell

Chemistry is probably my least favorite of the main three sciences to be honest. - Powell

9 Let It Go - Demi Lovato (Fractal)
10 Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - The Beatles (Plasticine) Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - The Beatles (Plasticine) Cover Art

A kind of modelling clay. - Powell

The Contenders

11 Wrapped Around Your Finger - The Police (Alabaster) Wrapped Around Your Finger - The Police (Alabaster) Cover Art

12 1000 More Fools - Bad Religion (Phantasmal)
13 On a Plain - Nirvana (Backmailed)
