Top Ten Songs from Tocotronic's "Pure Vernunft Darf Niemals Siegen"

“Pure Vernunft darf niemals siegen” is the seventh studio album by German Hamburger Schule band Tocotronic, released in 2005.

The album was a commercial success and peaked at number 3 on the German, number 9 on the Austrian and number 32 on the Swiss charts.

As the album was a commercial success, it had a lot of press coverage from popular music magazines where it was praised for capturing the zeitgeist of modern twens and its rock sound, but it also had much interest from intellectual circles and was talked about in sophisticated publications. Tocotronic have a standing of being one of the greatest German bands of all time, and so the reviews for any of their albums are more analytic and differentiated than those of other regular releases. Rather than judging its quality, critics were often more concerned with capturing every nuance of the album’s style, unique traits in comparison to their other works and its role both in popular culture and serious music lover circles.

"Pure Vernunft darf niemals siegen" is a continuation of their Hamburger Schule style from previous albums, a mix of indie rock, grunge and alternative rock associated with centering around teenage problems apart from the mainstream. It is calmer, more minimalistic and more melodious than their previous works. Also, the electronic elements of its predecessor are not present on the record anymore. It has been noted that Dirk von Lowtzow’s singing improved, and that the band's guitar playing has gotten more complex. The album's lyrics have been described as often unusual poetry. Topics are rejection of patriotic feelings, living an offbeat and aware lifestyle and love, but intentionally avoiding cliché. "Mystery Symphony" stands out as a 9 minute instrumental.

The album spawned three singles, “Aber hier leben, nein danke”, “Gegen den Strich” and “Pure Vernunft darf niemals siegen”, but none of them were hits (the first one peaked at number 72, the second one only at number 100, and the title track didn’t chart at all).
