Top Ten Songs With Almost Daily Airplay in Austria

Whether it's on the radio or when you're out in public, these songs are always heard whenever music is played. You can bet on it. They are not unlikely the most famous and popular songs of all time over here, and it's virtually impossible not knowing them. Many of them are internationally well known, others aren't as much.
The Top Ten
1 In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins

If I had to pick one single song to name the most popular of all time, based on the amount of airplay it receives on Austrian radio stations, it would be this one. Radio stations play it at least once a day. But that's the absolute minimum.

Glad to hear this song gets much attention in Austria!

2 Wind of Change - Scorpions

The only Scorpions song I listened to was Rock You Like a Hurricane, which is AWESOME!

This is a precious song

3 I Was Made for Lovin' You - Kiss

I'm not a big fan of Kiss but I like this song.
Fun fact: it's a disco song played in rock style. Paul Stanley, who co-wrote the song has stated that it was a conscious effort on his part to prove how easy it was to write and record a hit disco song.

And this one is close second. Austrian radio stations are crazy about this tune. Not unlikely the most popular rock song of all time.

4 I Want to Break Free - Queen

One of my favorite Queen songs

5 We Will Rock You - Queen

I love this song, yeah. That foot stomping is really catchy and powerful.

6 Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple
7 It's My Life - Bon Jovi
8 Purple Rain - Prince & the Revolution
9 Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson

Out of the many, many evergreens of Michael Jackson, this one is the one that is most often heard on the radio. Of course, several of his singles are still often heard, but every time I listen to the radio, it's this song that is played.

10 Ich war noch niemals in New York - Udo Jürgens

Udo Jürgens and Falco are the most popular and iconic Austrian musician of all time. The ones everybody loves - although in Falco's case this came over time, initially he was called insane, vulgar and violent. Jürgens however was seen as a brilliant singer and composer ever as soon as his career started in the 60s (especially after he won the Eurovision Song Contest of 1966).

The Contenders
11 Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits
12 Der Kommissar - Falco

Of course, "Rock Me Amadeus'" is a big huge hit and if you'd make a survey which Austrian songs are the most iconic, it'd probably be in the top spot (the number one success in America triggers Austria's patriotism very much), but actually, I have heard this tune way more often on the radio, by far. I think in Austria, both songs were equally big hits.

13 All You Need is Love - The Beatles

The definitive 60s song. There's no other song from that decade that is both as popular and as symbolic for positive values.

14 La Passion - Gigi D'Agostino

Gigi D'Agostino's "L'Amour Toujours" is one of the best selling albums of all time in Austria, and this is the biggest hit off it around the turn of the millennium. He was also somewhat successful in Germany, but not a big star as in Austria (over here, he had a couple of chart topping singles and albums, and top ten hits). Nevertheless, in 2018 he had a HUGE comeback with "In My Mind", which was his first number one hit in Germany (it peaked at number 2 in Austria).

15 Heroes - David Bowie
16 Waterloo - ABBA

That's a very pleasant energetic tune.

17 Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
18 Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word - Elton John
19 Feel - Robbie Williams
20 La Isla Bonita - Madonna
21 Beat It - Michael Jackson
22 Under Pressure - Queen & David Bowie
23 The Power of Good-Bye - Madonna
24 We are the Champions - Queen
25 Radio Gaga - Queen
