This is a list of the fastest, not necessarily the best, and it's not just from the heavy metal genre.
Fight Fire with Fire is Metallica's song with the fastest picking (tremolo-picked riffs) and I added it to the list.
Very good song. The tapping part inspired the most guitar tappers. But I won't call this a riff. A riff is usually a main part of a song. It is some notes repeated over and over. It may be a just a lick. But I'd rather call the whole song a solo. And all the different notes are licks. A lick is basically a short note, not repeated or for very few times. It can be usually found in solos.
Faster picking than Master of Puppets
Was very fast of that time. Still is.
In general, Slipknot are a faster band than Metallica. The intro is one of the fastest and most aggressive riffs ever written, way more complex and intense than Master of Puppets.
As fast as Slipknot ever gets. Way faster than Head Crusher.
