From the movie "House of Flying Daggers", and the song's words are the lead character's dying thoughts, as she lays dying in the snow. when she sings "Oh, where are you? ; I need to tell you I still love you", its for her lifelong love, who is lying dead in the snow next to her. The haunting final acapella line "Your voice still echoes... in my heart" is her last thought as she dies.

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song about his father, who died of cancer on September 1, 1982. At his father's funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie's room, Billie simply said, "Wake me up when September ends," hence the title.
The line "seven years has gone so fast" is a reference to how Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt's band Sweet Children (which would morph into Green Day), was formed seven years after Armstrong's father died.
"20 years has gone so fast" represents the time from his father's death to when Billie Joe wrote the song.
This was originally slated for Green Day's 2002 compilation album Shenanigans, but Billie Joe didn't feel that he was in an emotional state to record it, so the song was held back and used on American Idiot. >>

Such a beautifully sad, heart-wrenching song. The meaning is as beautiful and eloquent. For lovers of this song I also recommend Lost In Paradise, also by Evanescence, and Imaginary, by Evanescence. Amy Lee is an amazing singer and her songs always reflect on her voice, and the true tragedy of life. While many consider this song to be lazily written, I understand the true meaning and emotions that are evoked in this song.
The song is about the felling of being a disappointment to your parents and finding yourself, but you've become "numb"
When you hear it for the first time you'll think its really sad and about someone that this man cares about dearly had died. Once you look up the real meaning though it kind of ruins it.

This is by far the saddest song of all time
This song is about a soldier fighting in a war and a mortar blows off in his face. He can't hear, see, smell, taste and he doesn't have arms or legs. He comes out of a coma in a hospital. During the time he is in the hospital he reflects on his life and things his father told him. Eventually the doctors get worried because he's having spasms all the time, but he doesn't seem to be dying. They call in the general and he can't figure it out either but the soldier with the general recognizes it. "It's Morse code," he says. The general asks what he is saying and the soldier looks for a minute and then says, "He is saying K-I-L-L- M-E over and over again."
The lyrics are based on the novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, which is about World War I. A specific passage that inspired the song is: "How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it's a million to one shot. But if he does win, ...more - A7XREVFin21

This song is partially about the death of lead singer Gerard Way's grandmother, Elena Lee Rush. She taught Gerard how to draw, paint and sing, and she gave him his first car - the white van that appears in the original "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" video. The song is dedicated to her, as is the CD. She is mainly who the part "Can you hear me? Are you near me? " is for. But this song also starts the concept of the CD. A man and a woman (Helena) die in a car crash ("When both our cars collide"), except the woman doesn't really die, the man only thinks she has. The man is sent to Hell. This song is a mourning for Helena's "death" by the man. He is wishing he could see her again and is giving his last goodbyes ("So long and goodnight"). - A7XREVFin21

Lead singer Corey Taylor (from Kerrang! July 19, 2008): "This is the slow one. It's another personal one. Again, not naming names, it's about someone who helped me through a lot and I thought she felt the same way that I did and then she really let me down. At the same time, it was good that she did, because it was that final push to me figuring out myself. The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory."
This song is about how the protagonist's soul is too dark to let love in, telling somebody to get away from them. It's dark and brooding, representing the pits of depression or at least the bottom of the cycle in a manic-depressive. Slipknot being a particularly dark Nu-Metal band, it's pretty typical.
