Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
"The Wall" was the first Album I ever purchased. To be honest, I do not regularly listen to it anymore, but I listen rather often to "Comfortably Numb". And it is included in my personal "Best Songs ever" list (which is by the way less than 25 songs). It is not so important to know the whole "Wall" story to experience the magic of this song. It builds up a unique atmosphere where intensive voice and rather acoustic music seem to carry each other forward into the story of a depression. The listener gets drawn into it, and while the first solo of Gilmour in the middle of the song is still rather harmless, the second one where the song (and the respective story) culminates in is so brilliant and magnificent that I still get fully blown away from it even after 35 years and probably more than 100 times hearing it.
This song deserves to be higher than "you raise me up". While other 70s songs Bohemian Rhapsody, Hotel California, and Stairway to Heaven are great songs, (although "Stairway is extremely overplayed, ) Comfortably Numb is absolutely perfect. The opening notes are beautiful but melancholy and set the stage for Pink's story (the main character in the album, not the musician. The music shapes the journey of a troubled rockstar struggling to get through his every day life. That combined with brilliant lyrics, a heartfelt chorus- "I have become Comfortably Numb"- and guitar solo that sends a shiver down your spine, this is truly as song worthy of first place. I'll say it again, Comfortably Numb is absolutely perfect. Vote it into the top ten when you see it on this list. by the way, forgive me if I made any spelling/ grammatical errors. I'm making this comment on my phone and haven't checked it over
I can't really choose a best song ever, there's just too much great music to limit my choices by doing that. But if I were locked into choosing, this song would be close to No. 1. Pink Floyd broke up shortly after this album, and much of that had to do with infighting between band mates, Gilmour and Waters in particular. I've often thought that Waters lyrics conveyed his pain perfectly, and made it possible for me to see my own demons more clearly. Gilmour's composition is incredible. I'm in awe of this song, this album. - Ned964
This song has it's own genre - 'Out Of The World! '. A great song doesn't have to be hard rock and this is one of them.
Even though I'm a drummer I can't help but salute the guitarist (don't even know who he is! ). Honestly he is the only guy who has made a distorted electric guitar solo sound soothing and of course 'Out Of The World'. This song definitely deserves a place in the top ten.
Only topped by bohemian rapsody...and I have my doubts. This song is the epitome of music done right. "Right" is not even enough word for what this song is. This song reaches heaven itself and galaxies beyond with its greatness. It is not listened, it is felt. If I were a being from another galaxy and reached earth, like when we were all extinct and, exploring here I find this song along with Pink Floyd discography. I would think I'd just discovered God, for real.
When it comes to masterpieces within music - few artists or groups would ever dream of even making ONE.
Pink Floyd, on the other hand, gave out some of the greatest songs of all time. "Time", "Shine on you Crazy Diamond", "Comfortably Numb", "Hey You" and "Wish You Were Here" are all essential for any music-lover.
I would place "Comfortably Numb" on a third, maybe.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" first? I can go with that.
Nobody has ever played a guitar with more emotion than David Gilmour does on this track, the lyrics give you a fantastic insight into what Waters wants you to picture, incredible band and one of the most beautiful, moving, and astonishing songs of all time and I'm appalled it's so far down the list!!
Masterpiece, listening to this song changed my life
It's lyrics have such a deep meaning
Not everyone can understand it's true meaning
The guitar solo takes you into another dimension and when you return from that dimension you are a changed man forever
I can never get enough of this song. This is one of the best songs ever written lyrically, not to mention musically as well. Just when you think this song can't get any better, you're surprised by one of the best solos of all time to end this magnificent song.
Its really the ending solo that puts this at #1 for me, especially the Pulse version, the end solo played by David Gilmour is literally out of this word. I think that god wanted to destroy Earth but he heard David Gilmour's guitar and he decided not to.
Are you joking right now!? This is by far the best and if not the second best song of all time! The lyrics mean so much and the guitar solo is insane! You people have obviously never been to a Pink Floyd concert before. If you had ever been, you'd know exactly what I mean! - justinjhw
How the hell its on no. 31
Its the best song ever
Its ranked way beyond expectations
This song can be listen to in any situation
It just purifies the mind
And the last solo...
God! Its out of this universe
Pink Floyd are the gods of music, I don't think any band was or is or ever will be able to get to their level. As far as Comfortably Numb is concerned, this piece is just the best you can find on this planet
The best song that I have ever heard, on the best album I have ever heard. Amazing lyrics and a legendary guitar solo that sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. I have never heard a song better than Comfortably Numb. It's simply the best. - wubbalubbadubdub
I voted for this song because I think it's ridiculous that this masterpiece is outside of the top ten. Everything about this song makes you melt away into it and feel comfortably numb. Pure perfection from Pink Floyd.
A very emotionally tense and gripping song that dares to press against the Walls of insanity! It's diverse, but like many songs that strive for diversity, doesn't turn into a scattershot. I seriously love everything about this song!
Absolutely incredible song. Definitely a standout on the greatest album of all time. Some of the best lyrics ever, and the end Guitar solo has to be the greatest of all time. Not only that but it fit in absolutely perfectly on The Wall. - Boydy_23
Pink Floyd is my favorite band and this song one if not there best song people say this is a good song to get high and listen to but I'm only 14 and I don't get high but I still love this song
One of Pink Floyd's greatest songs with amazing lyrics, great instrumental composition & probably the greatest solo of all time (top 3) this is simply an amazing song with an amazing theme about Waters's life. Definitely a top 10 song
Pink Floyd should be way higher on this listed in general, comfortably numb, time, wish you are here. Bohemian rhapsody is not bad but I get sick of it unlike with Pink Floyd
One of their best. Astronomy domine, brain damage, coming back to life, a great day for freedom, sorrow and wish you were are all great, but this is their hallmark! Spectacular! Best heard in the dark..
With the greatest solo there ever was (Dave Gilmour), one of the best ever written lyrics (Roger Waters), an unmatched originality and some EXTRAORDINARY live performances (such as PULSE concert), this has to be one of the very best songs in the history of music. It's much more than any word can describe.
Keep calm and feel comfortably numb... - mba
This is definately my funeral sendoff song as well. But not until my friends have taken what I left behind for them and partied it up!!!Then they can send me off...comfortably numb.
No top 10 list is complete without Pink Floyd!
L floyd songs are like onions, they have so many layers to them and the deeper you go the more you feel like crying.
This one is truly a song for generations... even today, almost everyone can relate to being numb.
Floyd is not amazing because you're high,
Getting high is amazing because of Floyd.
Brilliant song! David Gilmour and Roger Water's voices are sos comforting and great. The song is slow and really makes you feel comfortably numb. And the guitar solo! Amazing song by an amazing band.
