Lennon was right. Since the Beatles, McCartney has produced nothing but mind-numbing, poppy Muzak. Course, Lennon was busy indulging the screeching cacophony of his talentless wife, so he really didn't have much room to gripe.
John Lennon talks about his former bandmate Paul McCartney in this song. Lennon wrote the song in response to McCartney's song "Too Many People", where Lennon felt attacked by McCartney.
"Those freaks was right when they said you was dead" (refers to the "Paul is dead" rumour)
"The only thing you done was yesterday and since you’re gone you’re just another day"
"The sound you make is muzak to my ears" - Metal_Treasure
I'm a huge Beatles and Lennon fan, but it was foolish, rude and childish of Lennon to attack McCartney like this. McCartney's "too many people" isn't even attacking Lennon directly, even though he later admitted that a couple of lines in the song was a dig at Lennon. How do you sleep was written by a Lennon blinded by hatred against Paul. Lines like "Those freaks was right when they said you was dead" and "The only thing you done was yesterday" are just stupid.
I'm glad John apologised later though. He even said the song was really about himself:
"Lennon softened his stance in the mid 1970s and said that he had written the song about himself. He stated in 1980: "I used my resentment against Paul to create a song, not a terrible vicious horrible vendetta … I used my resentment and withdrawing from Paul and The Beatles, and the relationship with Paul, to write 'How Do You Sleep'. I don't really go 'round with those thoughts in my head all the time".

By far one of the angriest and most demented hip hop songs to come out in the last decade. And that's what makes the song so great. The music video is also disturbing as hell. - phillysports

The song that inspired John Lennon (is 'inspired' the most fitting word here? ) to write "How Do You Sleep? " - Metal_TreasureUListen to Sample
I also heard the song was about Warren Beatty AND Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones) and David Bowie but I was sure only about Warren Beatty because she has mentioned him most often. - Metal_Treasure
Simon has always contended that the song was about three men. More recently, she has said that Beatty was the subject of only the second verse.
She wrote this song about Warren Beatty and their failed relationship. - Metal_TreasureUListen to Sample

"I’m gonna tell the world you’re rubbish in bed now
And that you’re small in the game" - Metal_Treasure
