Top 10 Best Studio Ghibli Films from 1994-2014

Even though I'm not a fan of anime, Studio Ghibli has some amazing films.
The Top Ten
1 Spirited Away

Yeah there's no denying it! This is as good as animated films are going to get! I doubt anything can top this! Again, I hate anime but I absolutely adore this movie! It is THAT good! The animation is breathtaking! The story is amazing! This whole place that the movie takes place in is so imaginative! Every character is great! This is a very unique film! In the beginning of the movie, I thought I was going to hate Chihiro, but she ended up being a character I really cared about and felt sorry for! I also really like Haku! He is very cool and he can turn into a dragon! Spirited Away is an excellent film! It's not just a great anime film, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen! There isn't a single thing I didn't enjoy about this film! Well actually a very minor nitpick I have though is that Lin is voiced by Susan Egan. So every time she talks, I think of Megara from Hercules. But again, I love this movie! It is the best animated movie I have ever seen!

2 Princess Mononoke

When I was told there would be violence in this movie, I knew I was gonna love it. And it did not disappoint. I was actually pretty surprised at the amount of violence that was in this movie! There's so much action going and it is great to watch! Kind of rare seeing something like this come from a Studio Ghibli film. The characters are very well developed! The dialogue is extremely brilliant! The settings are great! I especially love the animation! The amount of detail that went into making this film is just unbelievable! This is some top notch animation! Miyazaki is definitely one of the greatest animators of all time!

3 Ponyo

Ponyo is about a fish who becomes a human to be with someone she barely even knows. Her father forbids her from doing so, but she doesn't listen. And then a bunch of chaos happens and in the end, her father lets her stay a human and gets to be with her true love. This is CLEARLY The Little Mermaid! But that doesn't mean it's a bad film. I actually found it to be very cute. And Ponyo is a much more likeable character than Ariel. This was the first Studio Ghibli film that I watched in theaters. Ponyo and S'suke are just so adorable together! There is a lot of artistic creativity here. The scenes involving water are drawn so beautifully. I also really liked Liam Neeson as Fujimoto. He was my favorite character in the movie. I have one big problem though. Frankie Jonas and Noah Cyrus can't act at all! I know they were kids, but there are good child actors out there! The only reason they were cast was because they're relatives of Disney celebrities! Well, "former" Disney ...more

4 The Wind Rises

I actually didn't watch this movie until very recently. My sister told me it was a good movie and she said her boyfriend cried during it so I decided to check it out. This movie is brilliant. It's about a guy named Jir' Horikoshi who has a Dream of designing planes. And I really like this guy because he has great vision and is very determined to live up to this dream that he has had since he was a kid. It basically shows that if you don't give up, you can accomplish anything. This is definitely the most realistic movie that Miyazaki has come out with. I was really blown away by it! It does an excellent job at telling a good story through visuals and animation! Something that Howl's Moving Castle failed to do. I can understand why so many people loved this movie when it came out. It was even nominated for an Oscar. But it lost to FROZEN! This movie was robbed! Kind of sad that this was Miyazaki's last film. But at least his last film was an excellent one.

5 The Secret World of Arrietty

I've never heard of the Borrowers before watching this movie. But I must say this is a very well written movie! It has a lot of heart to it. I ended up really liking the characters. Especially Arrietty! She is such a good role model for younger girls! Which makes sense since she's literally a small girl. Haha! She cares a lot for her family and she is very brave. I also really like the character Shawn. He's the one who finds out about the small people but he is still really nice to them. In the U.S. version, he's voiced by David Henrie from Wizards of Waverly Place. But in the U.K. version, he's voiced by Tom Holland aka the current Spider-Man. I kind of wish this movie had a stronger ending. I felt like it ended a little too quickly. But this is a really enjoyable film.

6 When Marnie Was There

This was the last Studio Ghibli film to be released. It may not be the best film they've come out with but for what it is it's pretty good. It's a great story about friendship. The emotions of these characters are expertly drawn. The movie got a little emotional at times. Anna and Marnie are very relatable characters. However, I find this movie to be a little overrated. The pacing was a little slow at times and not a lot was happening. This movie isn't a masterpiece but I still like it.

7 Whisper of the Heart

I've actually never heard of this movie until my sister bought it on DVD. I didn't watch it until a few months later. I'm glad I eventually watched it. Because it turned out to be good. It's about a girl named Shizuku Tsukishima (copy and pasted the last name) who loves reading books. I was gonna make a Beauty and the Beast joke but forget it. She finds out that a boy named Seiji Amasawa (seriously, these names are difficult) whom she can't stand checked out the same books that Shizuku liked. The reason for this was because he had the hots for her. It's a pretty great love story. It's a little cliché but it does this cliché very well. Their relationship is developed really great. It also feels very realistic. I've only watched this movie once and I'm thinking about watching it again. A very enjoyable love story.

8 Howl's Moving Castle
9 The Cat Returns

I hate cats! When I first heard about this movie, I thought I was going to hate it! I thought it was going to be stupid beyond belief! Didn't look interesting at all and I was thinking about skipping this one! But I got around to watching and it was better than I thought it would be. I like to think of it as Alice in Wonderland but with cats. Despite my hatred of cats, I really like the cat characters. Especially the Baron. The visuals are brilliant. The voice acting is brilliant. Tim Curry was probably my favorite performance in the movie. I really love this movie's setting. It's wonderful and likeable fantasy film and something that is worth checking out.

10 From Up On Poppy Hill

From Up on Poppy Hill is a very simple film. It's very cliché but it's not a bad movie. I just wanna point out that this was directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son, Gorō Miyazaki. Who also directed Tales From Earthsea which was basically the Cars 2 of Studio Ghibli. But I quite enjoyed Poppy Hill. But that's probably because Hayao Miyazaki also worked on it. This movie has nothing magical happening it. It's just a very simple and realistic story and it's done very well. There is some pretty great character development and excellent voice acting. The voice acting really captures the emotions of the characters. It makes me really care about them and it makes me want them to have a happy ending. This is a short film but it's pretty sweet and heartfelt.

The Contenders
11 My Neighbor Totoro
12 Pom Poko

Quite possibly one of the strangest movies I've seen. I jusf couldn't stop laughing during this movie. Out of all the Studio Ghibli movies, this is by far the funniest. It's about racoon dogs that can shape shift for some reason. They also have other magical powers. They're all very likeable and hilarious. This is entire movie is underrated. There are some really great jokes in it and of course the animation is great. There are also things in it that might not be very suitable for children. But I had a good time watching this.
