Top 10 Best Theatrical Movies of 2017

There have been a lot of disappointments to come out this year, but there were still some pretty great movies. Let’s talk about them.

The Top Ten

1 Logan

The first half of the film was absolutely incredible but it started to lose the grit and atmosphere that set it apart from the other Wolverine and X-men films toward the end of the second act but regained it by the end.

A perfect sendoff for Jackman in his most iconic role. - Jackamalio

This was phenomenal. - iliekpiez

I love this movie it shows how wolverine acually has a daughter I wonder if they going to show some of her in the future - flashgamer64

2 Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Not the best by any means. Very flawed in some areas in fact. But overall a great film. - GrimmShady

Even better than Apes. - PeeledBanana

Overall very good. Kylo and Finn had character this time. My only real complaint is that the movie was way too hard to follow at times. It felt like 4 hours worth of content put into a 3 hour movie. At least in my opinion. - Randomator

It's decent but is basically Empire Strikes Back in reverse. - IronSabbathPriest

3 Blade Runner 2049

Underrated and widely misunderstood. - internaut

Best movie of the year. Miles better than that overrated Logan

I thought it was well scripted, acted and drawn out. - Wunked

Only for smart people...

4 Baby Driver

This movie was badass! Definitely a favorite of mine this year! - Phillip873

I liked it all, except for the middle part. - iliekpiez

No one puts Baby Driver in the corner! Seriously! You should totally watch it! It’s a great movie! It’s rare these days to see movies with practical stunts. In Baby Driver, however, all of the car stunts are real! They are all done with real cars and by real drivers! The fact that it was directed Edgar Wright should’ve made it obvious that this movie was gonna be good. He has always been a great director. This is no exception. Every action scene is amazing. The camera angles and shots are amazing. The soundtrack is amazing. The songs aren’t just put in here for the sake of there being songs. They actually play an important role in the story. Every actor does a great job as well. Jamie Foxx was amazing, Ansel Elgort despite not having a lot of dialogue was great as well, and even “he who shall not be named” was pretty great. If you cut out the scenes involving Debora, this would be a perfect film. Easily. - MegaSoulhero

5 Dunkirk

It might not have the characters or story that made Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan, The Deer Hunter & Full Metal Jacket so impactful, but it does feel like you're actually in the battlefield.

The movie is a masterpiece

Brilliant cinematography, a beautiful way to tell the story. Very powerful masterpeice.

A masterful work. - iliekpiez

6 Get Out

Way better than It and Wonder Woman!

Best movie ever I just can not stop watching this

This was a surprise to me. I didn’t have any expectations going into this, but I really enjoyed it. This movie is both intense and dark. There are scary elements, but it also has some pretty funny humor. Even the cinematography is very well done. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, gives a good performance. I didn’t know what to think of the movie before I saw it, but I’m glad I saw it. Definitely one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. It is such an excellent movie. Any good thing you’ve heard about this movie is absolutely correct. - MegaSoulhero

7 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

This movie is so badass why is it so low.

Underrated. - iliekpiez

8 Coco

Aside from the My Little Pony movie, this is another film I adore, despite watching it via a pirated dvd, the video and sound is still easy to understand. Anyways, the plot, theme, character, emotion, animation and music is very stunning. Definitely worth watching and up to Pixar's standards. I'd give a perfect 10 - Neonco31

Why isn't his higher on the list? IT IS MUCH BETTER THAN "LOGAN"

Easily the best animated film of the year. - Phillip873

I need to see this!

9 Spider-Man: Homecoming

I will forever be the only user here who preferred this over Wonder Woman, Thor Ragnarok, and GotG Vol. 2. This movie was really special to me - Phillip873

I know, I was just exaggerating, even though I do get criticized for liking this movie more than the previously mentioned ones. I still have yet to see Logan. - Phillip873

I loved this movie I saw it twice and I still found to be amazing - Azzyg99

One of the best MCU films. - iliekpiez

Only number 8

10 Wonder Woman

I'll be honest I think this is one of the most overrated movies of the year. It was still good but parts of this movie were terrible, like a couple cliche lines thrown around in the beginning or the last 30 minutes nearly ruining the movie altogether, or the CGI and green screen being garbage mostly. Still would watch this over any other recent DCEU movies though, because it does have great acting performances and the second act of the movie really shines! - Phillip873

This film stands out far more than any other DC movie - Neonco31

The only good DCEU film. - iliekpiez

This was the first good movie in the DCEU. And currently the only one. I didn’t hate Justice League, but there was a lot of wasted potential. Wonder Woman truly is great. It shows us why she is such a great superhero. Her only motivation for wanting to help people is just because she wants to. She has a heart of a true hero. She loves what she does. It doesn’t come from a tragic backstory like most superheroes. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine have great chemistry. I really love the scenes where Steve is helping Diane adapt to this place that she isn’t used to. There isn’t a single thing wrong with this movie. Except for the climax. What a mess. Not only did the twist not make any sense, the action in that scene had terrible visuals! But the rest of the movie is so great that this one scene didn’t ruin it for me. I still think it’s a very enjoyable comic book film. - MegaSoulhero

The Contenders

11 My Little Pony: The Movie

As a casual MLP fan myself, this film was horrible (I wrote a comment on another list of it that hasn't shown up yet), animation that's terrible compared to the show, with stiff and laggy frame rates (plus in one scene when Pinkie surfaces in water her mane is dry), most of the Mane Six aren't used very well (Fluttershy, Rarity and Applejack may as well not be in it), character assassination of Twilight Sparkle (I know what was leading up to it but she crossed the line too many times and I hate her now), the Mane Six didn't use any of their abilities often (Twilight mostly never cast spells or teleported, Rainbow and Fluttershy forgot they could fly), mostly lame, generic songs, the story is nothing special and is recycled from several premieres/season finales, Tempest is a one note villain whom despite her backstory (which still didn't explain why she was ENJOYING doing her evil deeds), did not deserve the ending she got, the whole thing with the Mane Six sea ponies ended up being ...more

Saw it 3 times in the first 3 weeks. I highly advise watching the show first to make this worth watching (if you're interested, that is)

Not so fast! This ain't lasting in 7th place any longer, cause I'm very sure everyone else is going to fry it out! - Neonco31

This movie is pretty bad - MegaSoulhero

12 The Lego Batman Movie

Great, but the pacing is too fast and can affect the jokes. - iliekpiez

This movie is incredibly hilarious, it was my favorite animated feature of the year before I saw Coco! Will Arnett is a great Batman to be honest. - Phillip873

After the success of the Lego Movie, they decided to make a spinoff about Lego Batman. And it was hilarious! Personally, I enjoyed it more than I enjoyed the Lego Movie. I think I laughed more watching this movie than I did while watching any other movie that came out this year. It makes fun of just about everything Batman related. Even the oldest versions of Batman. It’s not just a great Batman parody film, it’s a great Batman film. The action is done very well and is very fast paced. I love how the movie deals with Batman’s struggle of being alone. It actually shows how lonely he is despite him not wanting to admit it. There are actually some pretty emotional moments. I was pretty surprised by that. I really enjoyed this one. It’s a shame that it’s the only good Lego movie to come out this year. Lego Ninjago sucked! - MegaSoulhero

13 War for the Planet of the Apes

One of the best films of the 2010s. - iliekpiez

This was the weakest of the trilogy, but I still thought it was pretty great. The visual effects look very realistic. Andy Serkis is amazing as Caesar. There’s a lot more dramatic moments in this one than in the others. They do a great job at making us care for the characters. A tragic thing happened in the film, which I won’t give away, but it was pretty emotional. But yeah. Compared to the other two films, this one is a disappointment. I can’t exactly call it a bad movie. There was still a ton of effort put into this. It ended up being very enjoyable. If you liked the first two movies, then chances are you’ll like this one as well. It definitely doesn’t deserve the hate it’s been getting. - MegaSoulhero

14 It

This was a great movie that mixed comedy and scares very well. - Jackamalio

Should be 1, the last jedi isn't good - B1ueNew

One of the best horror remakes - iliekpiez

I didn’t like the original mini-series, but this movie was phenomenal. And this is coming from someone who isn’t a fan of horror films. This movie isn’t exactly scary, but that’s not what makes it a great movie. It’s the characters and the story. The Losers Club kids have a great connection. Their interactions feel very real. These kids are great actors. I also really enjoyed Pennywise. I’ll admit that he was pretty frightening at times and still had some silly moments. Despite some of the scares not exactly being scary, they are executed pretty well. Whenever something scary is about to appear, there would be a red balloon that shows up as kind of a warning. The visual effects are garbage, but the rest of the movie is great. I’m excited for the sequel. - MegaSoulhero

15 Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie

A good supehero comedy film. - girlcool

16 Thor: Ragnarok

Best movie of 2017. - darthvadern

Why so low. Should at least be top ten.

Should be much higher on the list - wren6

Best film in 2017

17 Justice League

Decent but can still be flawed but anyways I like it - Neonco31

A pretty awesome superhero film. - girlcool

It was ok I guess... - Phillip873

Knew some/most people have problem with this movie. Everyone has opiton but it ammoys me. - AdamBurt

18 Cars 3

This feels like a real Pixar movie, and it has a great message towards not judging people on what there dream to be is, much better than the disappointment cars 2 - B1ueNew

I love this film, it is one of my favorite movies of 2017 and Disney Pixar 😍

19 Split

A triumphant return for Shamalamdingdong. - Jackamalio

20 Despicable Me 3

How can anyone think cars 3 (the disappointment) was better than this film?! Despicable Me 3 was hilarious throughout the movie and my kids loved it. Well worth watching in my opinion.

The Despicable Me franchise has ran out of ideas. The second one would've been a great way to end off a franchise, but when they announced they were bringing it back, everyone expected a masterpiece. We didn't get that, it was just yet another disappointing sequel of 2017. - DisneyLover19

Masterpiece sequel. - darthvadern

I liked this movie which is not something I can say about any of the other animated movies I saw this years. The emoji movie and cars 3 were so boring when compared to this film. Though coco is good like this one.

Amused the kids, amused me and amused those all around me as well. I might not be a huge fan of the minions but still I enjoyed this movie, which is something that I cannot say for Cars 3 or the emoji movie. Both of those were outright sucky disappointments for everyone I know. Give me minions anyway over those 2 movies.

21 Smurfs: The Lost Village

Cute. - girlcool

22 Ferdinand
23 Churchill
24 Kong: Skull Island
25 The Comedian
26 The Disaster Artist
27 A Dog's Purpose
28 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
29 Wonder

YES. What a great adaptation. - Absolite

30 Wind River

Amazing movie, all about tenacity and character. "This is the land of you're on your own."

31 John Wick: Chapter 2

Top sequel

32 Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale
33 Going in Style
34 The Emoji Movie

Deserves the number one spot. - PeeledBanana

Pretty funny. - girlcool

Who put this on here? This film sucked.

We all in who added this to the list, & her name starts with a G

35 Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Why is this movie in 34th place? It was amazing! One of my favorites of all time! - listotaku17

I love Emma Watson and she was incredible in this movie.

And how is this below the Emoji Movie? - listotaku17

Better than emoji movie

36 Rough Night

Girl cool polluted the list!

37 Happy Death Day
38 The Ardennes

A Delightful and vastly underrated film from Belgium - Seventies-Music-Fan

39 Power Rangers

It does have some flaws like some cheap jokes, some parts that look like they're trying to push some politics in it and I do wish they expanded more on the lore of the zords and mention how they were made after the dinosaurs/mastadon/saber-toothed tiger, but other than that this movie was great, in some parts, far better than the original MMPR series (having better characterization and development).

40 Alien: Covenant

Not Perfect By Any Means, But Pretty Good Despite Painfully Stupid Decisions In The Film - JPK

41 The LEGO Ninjago Movie
42 Birth of the Dragon

It's great

43 Creep 2
44 Born in China
45 The Shape of Water
46 Ingrid Goes West
47 Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: Reflection
