Best thing about the series is the gameplay. I only like the story in the RPGs so I don't tend to go for the storyline. With Mario, it is mostly about the simple, traditional platforming that made the series so revolutionary to begin with.
I love the gameplay.
Nobody plays Mario for the story, it's super simplistic. Every game, it's Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario saves her. We play it for the amazing platforming gameplay. The only Mario games with a really good story are the RPGs.
They seem bland, but they're not. Complex and developed characters are Wario, Bowser, Luigi, Dimentio, Count Bleck, Fawful, Rosalina, Admiral Bobbery, and more.
If I were to list 100 of my favorite video game characters I'm certain a good chunk would be Mario characters.

Waluigi is a lanky self-centered, brusque young lad as he is considered evil and the main rival of Luigi. Waluigi is shown causing local havoc in most games he appears in alongside his partner Wario. Waluigi is not instinctively evil or the antagonist (not counting DDR), as a matter of fact, he shows great compassion for his fellow peers, typically for characters Daisy and Wario. Waluigi is also described as lonely, rejected, sad, or depressed due to his relationship with the Super Smash Bros. franchise, and people outside of Nintendo continually rejecting him.
