Phillip Reviews: Thor Ragnarok (2017) [SPOILER FREE]

Phillip873 Just went to the theater recently to see Thor Ragnarok. I was expecting it to be just an ok movie at best (the previous Thor movies suck). After reading reviews though, I found out this was a lot like a comedy, and I was pleasantly surprised!

Plot Summary:
"Imprisoned, the mighty Thor finds himself in a lethal gladiatorial contest against the Hulk, his former ally. Thor must fight for survival and race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela from destroying his home and the Asgardian civilization."

The Story:
So basically, this story is about Thor's dad dying and he getting stuck in some strange world for some time, while his powerful sister takes over Asgard. I was mostly able to follow this movie, except for the beginning, because I barely remember previous Thor movies because I was not into them. After that though, I was able to follow it mostly. As for pacing, I thought that the scenes in the Grandmaster's world (forgot what it was called) dragged on sometimes and felt slow. Other than that it was fine. Now the thing I liked most about this movie was that it was hilarious! I heard much about director Taika Watiti and his movies, and this movie makes me want to see his other movies! I already laughed a couple times in the first 5 minutes of the movie! It was quick and snappy humor and everyone in the theater was having a good time! Much better than the other 2 Thor films. The first half of the film is funnier than the second half, because I guess it was trying to take itself more seriously later? One of my biggest complaints of this movie however was that the movie put an excessive amount of jokes in scenes meant to be taken seriously. I'm trying to make this post spoiler free since this movie is new at the time of me writing this, but I will just tell you all that. Marvel usually has this problem with their more comedic movies, but I can get past it, it doesn't effect the plot too much. Other than those two complaints, the story is solid. Not gonna talk about the end because I want to keep this post spoiler-free.

The Characters/Acting:
I can't really say much about the acting, it was solid, nothing super amazing but not bad. Chris Hemsworth is a fine Thor and he serves his role. As for the characters, you can't say much because they are mostly familiar, everyone knows who Thor and the Hulk are. But the thing I liked about this movie is that they made Hulk an actual character and not just a shoe-horned in cameo that plays a small insignificant role in the story. But the funny thing is, they did this with Doctor Strange who only shows up once to be convenient to the plot, but it's not bad. Thor's sister Hela was a pretty good villain! She was genuinely threatening, but her personality is one note (wanting power and killing people).

The Effects/Action:
I thought this movie looked neat, I liked most of the settings, and Ragnarok (the giant monster) looked really neat. Nothing spectacular but servicable. The action is also good too, it's nothing amazing but it has its moments. Like there is this one scene that's a fight scene with jets and it's cool and well directed! Overall everything looks neat and solid!

Extra Thoughts/Complaints:
I don't have many extra thoughts, but I would like to momentarily talk about Marvel. I like that they are producing funnier super hero movies, because if I'm being honest, I do like to watch funny superhero comedies, in a time where everyone wants all super hero movies to be mature. Props to Waititi to making something funny and Marvel producing it. As for EXTRA complaints, there were some jokes that fell flat, mostly in the scenes meant to be taken seriously, which I talked about earlier. Also this is small, but some of the score (music) felt weird and out of place, there was this little lazer sound effect that popped in the score every now and then in establishing shots and it felt a bit distracting.

Rating: 7/10 (Good)
Final Thoughts/Summary: Thor Ragnarok may not be a super fantastic superhero film, and it does have noticeable flaws, but it is a very fun movie with lots of funny jokes and a solid story. It is totally better than the past Thor movies and I recommend this to anyone looking for just a comedy!
