Greatest Thrash Metal Opening Tracks

The Top Ten

1 Angel of Death - Slayer

"Raining Blood" is overrated. It's a great closing track, that's for sure, but I prefer Angel of Death. Also, the track pays so much allusion to Death Metal, with that heavy shredding from beginning to end, the vocals and the lyrical theme displayed (The Holocaust in a more graphical depiction).

Also, "Hell Awaits" deserves a mention. That opening is something. I like the opening of "Hell Awaits" more, although "Angel of Death" is the better song overall. - CrimsonShark

2 Holy Wars... the Punishment Due - Megadeth
3 Over the Wall - Testament
4 Fight Fire with Fire - Metallica
5 Bonded by Blood - Exodus
6 Enemy of God - Kreator
7 Hardwired - Metallica
8 Die by My Hand - Coroner
9 Battery - Metallica
10 Last Rites / Loved to Deth - Megadeth

The Contenders

11 Hell Awaits - Slayer

This one has a very chilling and effective intro that really sets the tone for this song. That chant saying "Join Us" in reverse is really creepy and atmospheric, combined with a dark guitar sound, followed by a demonic commandment "Welcome Back! ". This is Slayer at one of their most creative in just under a minute, and that first minute of "Hell Awaits" is one of the best musical pieces Slayer has made in their entire discography.

"Angel of Death" may be their best song, but "Hell Awaits" remains their best introductory verse. - CrimsonShark

12 Blackened - Metallica

This is honestly Metallica's best intro song. "Battery" and "Enter Sandman" are overrated (Still great though) and "Hit the Lights", "Fight Fire With Fire" "That Was Just Your Life" and "Hardwired" deserve mentions as well.

I love how "Blackened" starts out and it has some of the best and most unique lyrics Metallica has written, about the destruction of Mother Nature and eventually Earth. It's also kind of a protest song when you think about it and there are some allusions to the band Nuclear Assault alongside. - CrimsonShark

13 South of Heaven - Slayer
14 Practice What You Preach - Testament
15 Impact is Imminent - Exodus
16 War Ensemble - Slayer
17 That Was Just Your Life - Metallica

Metallica's most underrated intro track. While others praise "The Day That Never Comes" and "All Nightmare Long" as Death Magnetic's highlights, there's this underrated gem that's sadly never discussed as much. It's a return to format in Thrash Metal and the lyrics are great too. - CrimsonShark
