15 days ago I made this list: Most Important Early Releases of Technical and Progressive Thrash Metal.
The first bands were Watchtower (demo 1984) and Annihilator (demo 1985). Watchtower demo sounds more like prog metal (Rush) with thrash elements. Annihilator demo is real technical thrash.
Yes, I know the same - the term thrash metal came from this song.
Before that James Hetfield used to describe Metallica as power metal. He was partly correct as thrash is a mix of power/speed metal with hardcore punk. But thrash is a more suitable and correct name.

Wow, how in anyone's slightest lapse of judgement would this not be number one. The structure, tightness, and unbelievably intricate guitar work by Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman is absolutely phenomenal. No other song one this list comes close. You guys need to listen to this song again, and pay attention!
