Long List Inspecting #27 Channel 4's ''100 Greatest Cartoons''

Well many things occurred in the year 2005, this website would become one of the most known countdown sites, and in the thick of was this infamous british produced countdown from 2005 done by Channel 4. Last time I saw this in its entirety was when I was in my mid-teens. I must say seeing some of these familiar faces is kinda mind blowing like Jimmy Carr. The criteria of the list itself is very odd. When I think cartoons I expect to be animated shows right? Well they also include movies in the mix. With that said let’s take another far look into the countdown.

#100 Wacky Races - A semi forgotten classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon that spawned a few games and a spin off of one of the side characters. I liked the idea of it overall. A very interesting one to start the whole countdown.

#99 The Pink Panther - Might be a bit low honestly, if we're talking about that cartoon the iconic jazz theme. Kinda tried to follow the same formula as Tom & Jerry and did well on its own in that aspect. Spawned a few awful movies, but otherwise a classic cartoon.

#98 Wait Till Your Father Gets Home - I’ve seen only a trailer of this on a Flintstones DVD. Got a big 70’s vibe to it, while also being a pretty edgy show on a lot of the stereotypes they tackle. Well Its Hanna-Barbera but far more mature than you could imagine.

#97 Huckleberry Hound - Ehh, ungodly boring. My goodness its literally the definition. Granted if it wasn’t for this we never would have got Yogi Bear, but good god man this is tough to watch.

#96 Betty Boop - A bit too low, but I can’t say I have seen a single episode since its dated in the 1930’s. My deceased grandmother loved her. So for that time she was one of the bigger names at the time. At least she’s on the list.

#95 Charlie Says - It sounds very british, and therefore I got nothing to say about it.

#94 ‘‘Queer Duck: The Movie’’ - Now this is where the controversy begins, and its not because of I don’t have any knowledge of this, its more of the fact its a movie. Making the list seems so weird as we move along.

#93 Mr. Magoo - I have seen this guy before. He just reminds of a clueless old person following the days of what he does on the adventures of his daily life. There’s even a movie dedicated to him that’s not been given kind review overall.

#92 Animal Farm - Again its a film, not to say I don’t dislike it. A very intriguing film, but on a list like this not so sure.

#91 Mighty Mouse - ''Here he comes to stare at your Soul!’’

#90 Captain Caveman - One of Mel Blanc’s 1,000 characters he had voiced. Problem I don’t have any recollection of this character specifically.

#89 Felix the Cat - Another carton similar to Betty Boop that I have heard of overtime, but didn’t see anything of. Still though he is ionic for his time in the early 1900’s.

#88 Woody Woodpecker - A bit too low, great laugh, a nice set of side characters. I say give it a shot if you like watching classic shorts. Not Looney Tunes level, but it was still fairly good overall.

#87 Jamie & the Magic Torch - It sounds like a novel its based around, but I could be wrong, and frankly I don’t care for it seeing there’s gonna be of these types of british cartoons I have nothing much to say.

#86 Watership Down - This film is kinda underrated for its disguise in violence depicted alone. For something that was supposed to be kid friendly who knew something like this would turn so mature like.

#85 Droopy - Okay now this is a better version of taking a sad looking animal (poodle in this case) and turning him to be rather amusing. Yeah there’s a few episodes that are identical, but overall in these very small shorts I died laughing every time I revisit Droopy.

#84 Roobarb - One Season? Okay this should not be here. I never even heard of this, and its better than everything up to this point?

#83 Dumbo - The movie inclusion gets weirder as they proceed. Dumbo is a very dark Disney movie overall, and its not one of my favorites. Probably more at the bottom of those very classic Disney movies.

#82 How the Grinch Stole Christmas - Christmas classic, but the whole idea leaves me confused. Not the movie itself, but how it would stack if were going by both cartoon, and animated films apparently.

#81 Babar - Another very british show, but I actually saw this one. Very few times, but I don't recall much about an elephant.

#80 The Yogi Bear Show - A bit goofy and cheesy goodness. Yet he was the only good thing to come of its predecessor by far. Granted the shows that spawned after this didn’t exactly have that same charm.

#79 Peter Pan - I do still like Peter Pan more than some of those older classics. The story of never growing old, and it gave us a great memorable villain in Captain Hook.

#78 Noggin the Nog - ‘‘Are you Nogging my Noggin?’’

#77 Tintin - Okay I have heard of this one. Based on books, but can’t say I know of its TV adaptation.

#76 Triplets of Belleville - A film, somehow I have never heard of it. Yet its gotta be one of the better foreign flicks based on what they say.

#75 Lady and the Tramp - Romance with the dogs pretty much. It had perhaps one iconic scene, but that’s really all it has as time goes on.

#74 Willo the Wisp - A classic 80’s cult classic in the U.K., and yet revived around the time this list was made hmm...

#73 Pepe La Pew - Oh so were just going by characters… okay I guess. Pepe at times has some good moments given in Looney Tunes.

#72 Legend of the Overfiend? - Yeah I don’t know what to say here.

#71 Alice in Wonderland - I gotta be honest I never really like this trippy Disney movie. Its why people like it. It makes you wonder if Alice is really a good person in theory.

#70 Monty Python’s Flying Circus - Didn’t really realize there was one made in animation. Regardless, I'm not that big into Monty Python.

#69 Wind of the Willows - Another show that is based on a novel. Wouldn't know if it's actually good or not.

#68 Hong Kong Phooey - Iconic, and groovy theme. A dog doing kung-fu kinda funny show I gotta say for a very later Hanna-Barbera when their shows were on decline.

#67 The Snowman (1982) - Oh the original Snowman, and not the very creepy looking live action one right. It's alright, but again the movie rankings with the actual cartoons is a weird idea in itself.

#66 Captain Pugwash - Oh hey another british show based off another novel. Next!

#65 A Bug’s Life - I used to like this a lot back in the day, but looks pretty dated in comparison to the other Pixar films.

#64 Top Cat - ‘‘Yeah, a rad tad cat.’’ Maybe not their best, but I did like Top Cat quite a bit actually. During that time Cats were really getting popular unlike that laughable movie that just came out.

#63 Bambi - Oh hey its the movie that influenced not to spoil a movie with the death of a character. That’s really all I like about it. I don’t recall the rest of Bambi.

#62 Battle of the Planets - Also known as G-force, yeah I can’t say I have seen an episode of this. It looks cool for anime standards so i’ll give it that, but I know nothing.

#61 Foghorn Leghorn - Awe yes the loud mouth blabber master. Foghorn has had his moments as well at times, but he can get old real fast.

#60 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Everyone has seen this story, and knows it from beginning to end. It has since being severely dated for being the 1st Disney film.

#59 Chicken Run - Love this movie, probably my favorite of that animation. The idea of escaping from a farm where Chickens get slaughtered is a great imagery concept. The inclusion of Mel Gibson is even better.

#58 Powerpuff Girls - One of those rare cartoons where guys and girls would like this in an understanding. Great iconic theme, great characters, memorable narrations. Never should have been rebooted.

#57 The Jungle Book - The original film was one I didn’t have as a favorite of mine. Seen it only a few times. I prefer its live action version being one of the better remakes.

#56 Fritz the Cat - Okay… now this is taking cats in a more kinda rated R type feeling in this indie forgotten movie. That’s all I could gather with what they are going by.

#55 The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - I did like this a lot as a kid, after this came the show which was good as well. The winnie the Pooh franchise may not have had the success it had if it wasn’t for the original talents this one had going.

#54 Thundercats - A retro 80’s classic, epic theme, great characters. Had a short lived revival in 2011 that was intriguing, and you have the god awful one currently running. One thing you can't take away is the name has a legacy going for it.

#53 Fantasia - Great film where it combined animation with classical orchestra. I mean what movie features both the Devil, and magic?

#52 2Dtv - Never heard of it, but it looks like it was before Lil’ Bush which was awful.

#51 The Little Mermaid - Mostly the movie every girl at that time can’t help but love and who could blame them. Not me, it's fine for what it is. I do respect it, but it's something I would watch a few times.

#50 Donald Duck - Okay now here’s a classic everyone recognizes. If that’s the case than Goofy was partially snubbed by this odd criteria.

#49 Scooby Doo, Where Are You! - I respect how many shows came out from this, but my goodness this show is too repetitive. Yeah it has great catchphrases, but when I did catch this on Boomerang. Those were my initial thoughts. Played those same 10 or 15 episodes over and over instead of all 50 in a row.

#48 The Roadrunner Vs. Wile E. Coyote - These shorts I like The original incarnation of Scooby-Doo, but a bit more creative how Wile E manages to fail in just taking a bit out of the road Runner in any given short.

#47 Bod - I mean if your ranking the best animation from british in general this above Chicken Run I just don’t see it being on for one season of 13 episodes.

#46 Inspector Gadget - Yeah i could see this one on here. Inspector Gadget is an 80’s classic and of course like many got two pretty bad movie tie ins. Despite this I caught a few episodes on Hub it is pretty good and that how clueless the Inspector is makes it comedy gold.

#45 Pokemon - Video Games are pretty good, but I could never get into the show. Its anime, but not nearly the best anime that I have seen. I’m sensing a lot of snubbing in this department as well.

#44 Spider-Man (60’s) - Granted the 90’s Spider-Man didn’t have at all the best animation when I rewatched that. This one might be slightly better in that regard. They both have great themes i’ll give them that. The 60’s version might be too high though if we were looking at the writing quality.

#43 Ivor the Engine - Aheh… it looks like one of those Red Bulls commercials. It seems like a coincidence to me, but yet maybe i’m wrong because that’s all I can think of.

#42 Samurai Jack - Great show, i’m glad came back to get a proper ending. You want the show that was bold, and epic. Samurai Jack was completely different from most other Cartoon network shows. I’d go on to say Tartakovsky's best work ever.

#41 King of the Hill - There are some episodes that I like a lot, and the majority of them just put me to sleep. This is your full right family driven show. I used to put this on when Adult Swim aired it constantly. Just so I could go to sleep and get ready for the next day. In terms of quality its not better than the last one. Hopefully we see one last Mike Judge show that is better than this one.

#40 Rugrats - That’s a fair spot, now granted it was Muppet Babies that started this trend of going in a weird adventure in animation, but Rugrats for me was that show I just liked its weird way of thinking to what these babies would go upon any given episodes. Some are darker than others. I do feel its far better in quality than another Nick show i’m probably gonna see on here.

#39 A Charlie Brown Christmas - I’m more of the Great pumpkin guy being the best Charlie Brown special. This one is okay, but I say watch that one over this.

#38 101 Dalmatians - Yeah, popular for a bit when it came out. Spawning two live action movies that were actually not that terrible. I could see that near the top end.

#37 Transformers - I mean it's an iconic show this is where you first heard of Michael Bay, Megatron, or Optimus Prime in this cyber world between Autobots and Decpticons. Just the originality in these characters is what does it for me. In terms of best quality I’d give that slightly more to Beast Wars, but that was more of a brutal direction.

#36 Magic Roundabout - Okay that one I could understand lasting a good longtime. Through the 60’s-to 70’s is fair.

#35 Sylvester and Tweety - Now sing that tune Tweety? Now Sylvester go after the bird you know you want to eat the yellow bird. It's a part of Looney Tunes, and everybody loved it. ‘’Sufferin succotash!’’

#34 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - Oh course its the 80’s one didn’t like this very much. I like the reboot that’s more like what it should have been.

#33 Beauty and the Beast - A beloved classic 90’s Disney film that was actually up for an Academy Award. In terms of those Disney Princess films I do like this one the best. Belle is a bit of a smart character, and the Beast is very interesting how that development plays out. I guess my nitpick I never cared for Gaston he seemed like a generic jerk villain. Overall I do like this Disney classic.

#32 Beavis & Butthead - Yeah that’s the other Mike Judge I would hope rank higher than King of The Hill. What these two would do to stupid levels made one of the most controversial but also pretty funny MTV shows ever. Back when their animation was actually pretty good with some other shows in the mix.

#31 Mickey Mouse - Iconic character, he is what you think immediately when you see or hear the name Walt Disney is this flagship character. A bit low especially being one of his greatest debuts in Steamboat Willie. From there the rest is history.

#30 Daffy Duck - Yeah I’d say Daffy is top 30 material. Everytime I see any short of his I usually laugh knowing its Daffy Duck. A close second to Bugs Bunny.

#29 Dungeon and Dragons - Oh the magic of the gathering type show? If not, then I got nothing or why it's nearly this high is babbling.

#28 Spongebob Squarepants - Oh here we go kids. Now to be fair the show was still good when this list aired so I might give it a pass, but overall if this was 2020 and still ongoing, and the writing is really not the same the clear Edge would be Rugrats. Back up a bit those early seasons were comedy genius, and then add in the movie being the last really great to happen for this show. For that time 28 makes sense.

#27 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) - You have to go back to the original incarnation being this show that spawned a legion of fans that exist today. This show lasted a good decade almost. Spawned live action movies some good, while others not so much. Spawned two other shows after this from the 2000’s, and 2010’s. Yeah that’s a good spot for how much this one became a major success.

#26 Futurama - This show took me time to accept it was good. While I do like the aspect of it being very futuristic. The way it was done made me think of a barely nicer second rate Simpsons. Still though a lot of people so I can’t hold that against them. I just didn’t like nearly as much.

#25 Pinocchio - A movie that almost everybody was introduced to. It's aged a bit better than Snow White. Just the disturbing nature of it alone made a memorable film being Disney's secretive horror story of just trying to become a boy while also being turned into a Donkey, and all other elements combined.

#24 Danger Mouse - One of the better shows to come from the U.K for sure. So think James Bond as a tiny mouse, and that’s sorta this show. It was a major hit in the 80’s, and got a reboot recently that’s surprisingly good.

#23 Popeye the Sailor - The idea of eating healthy probably came from a tough guy from the 30’s. That being Popeye the guy who would always beat up various villains in any given episode. Otherwise a classic nevertheless.

#22 Monsters, Inc. - Yeah I love this one more than the eventual prequel they would tackler later on. The idea of Monsters scaring you was a great idea for Pixar’s 3rd film to go with. Great voice talents as well. The score is pretty good as well. A lot to like about Monsters Inc. 2001 in general had some great animated movies, and this was one of them.

#21 Princess Mononoke - Your lack of anime is quite disturbing. No seriously only four or five of them in that regard? Princes Mononoke is both very violent, but looks great at the same time. Literally every review you see is pretty much positive. Nobody has anything bad to say about this Anime one bit.

#20 Looney Tunes - Here’s where things get totally confusing. Looney Tunes as a whole makes the list. Yet we even added separate characters on the list as well therefore the whole behind this is totally unclear. Even than It totally confused me.

#19 Who Framed Roger Rabbit - Oh I love this movie, from beginning to end. Yes, even the screwed up ending reveal of Judge Doom. This movie packs it all in, while being the biggest cop-out knowing its not all animation. Which in itself that’s been what this countdown has been to this point.

#18 The Ren & Stimpy Show - A tad too high, I’d still put it above Spongebob though. I respect the show for being such a vastly different Nick show from everything else. There was definitely variety put in for this show between the disturbing elements, and the memorable episodes, or even the side characters. Animation since has looked a bit dated for the early episodes mainly.

#17 Aladdin - Great classic Disney movie in the highest peak in the early 90’s hit after hit. Great setting, wonderful characters, excellent story. A very odd looking live action film. Yet still Aladdin gave us a pretty good set of video games, and a pair of decent direct to DVD movie tie in as well.

#16 Akira - Not quite as violent as the last anime, but still a very interesting story behind this one. Akira is one of those Anime that disguised itself as kid friendly when it really was not making this a cult classic unintentionally.

#15 Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit - So out of all the british related shows this one is perhaps the highest of all of them. Well this was an actual TV show before being given an eventual movie which was okay compared to Chicken Run. Don’t get me wrong it has good animation. It gets old fast and would probably put me to sleep real quickly.

#14 Finding Nemo - Again, another early great Pixar film where’s the great chase to find marlin’s kid. Glad to see it get an eventual sequel to one of its characters in Dory. It’s a good lesson when it comes to losing a kid out of nowhere.

#13 Nightmare Before Christmas - ‘’This is halloween, this is halloween, even Marilyn Manson recognizes this epicness.’’ Seriously that’s one of the best openings to a movie I have ever seen. Eventually Tim Burton ahd other works, but not like the magic this one caught on.

#12 The Iron Giant - The one bad thing about the movie is the trailer of it implied very wrong. As this huge robot fight like presentation. Instead it was not of that sort.Still though turned out to be a great film on its own. The name Brad Bird caught on soon thereafter with another great set of titles he would go on to do thanks to the success of this one.

#11 The Flintstones - For being the ripoff of Honeymooners. A pretty successful way of doing that with a more mesozoic era setting. Flintstones is not only the best Hanna-Barbera show ever. In a way it influenced other shows that came after it with a family-like setting.

#10 Bugs Bunny - Now don’t get wrong Bugs Bunny is a great cartoon character. Probably the best of all time, but he is the star of Looney Tunes. There are five volumes that are dedicated to the most charismatic rabbit ever. I would also argue in terms of the star power Looney Tunes as a whole should rank above the most beloved character overall.

#9 The Incredibles - A great family version of Fantastic Four that works well with some of the humor even adults can relate to. Action packed, wonderful score that fits in brilliantly. The Incredibles is almost too perfect for its own good in terms of Pixar would rank near the evry top of the thick of things.

#8 Spirited Away - In terms of anime movies… Yes, this is the best one I have seen. Just the idea you are in this very bizarre world trying to escape makes for a very original story. No other anime has come close to actually winning at the academy like this impressed many.

#7 The Lion King - Awe yes nothing like a great score, and a rabid fanbase all in the while. Everything to that point was golden for Disney and this blew many away telling it from the Lion perspective.

#6 Shrek - Shrek was great for its time, I don’t know if I would have it above some of the others films it best out. Still though this one did right by telling the fairytale story done backwards. After two decades it still looks pretty impressive for 2001.

#5 Family Guy - Now keep in mind this was when Family Guy was cancelled. In its two season run was quite possibly hilarious cutaway gags made the show unique in that aspect telling the jokes. Nowadays its quite a shame it should have died after the 8th season that’s when the show was going downhill. Now its just bad ideas after another making this 5th place placement look pretty bad.

#4 Toy Story - Well… at least they limited which Toy Story they wanted to have on the list. I do like the first one more than the second. It was a revolution for computer animation. Great story, amazing voice cast. Needless to say being the best and highest ranked movie that is justified.

#3 South Park - Great satire written show, while the animation was never the best it got better over time. I mean you want the funniest show right now still running South Park is still that. The quality has been better than another show that beat it at this point in time.

#2 Tom & Jerry - Great slapstick comedy of silent humor you will ever see. The movies… horrible. Otherwise the most iconic duo perhaps of all time just barely snagged 1st place.

#1 The Simpsons - Simpsons overtime is slightly better than Family Guy which has overstayed their welcome far worse. At least in the defence of The Simpsons in the 90’s they were must see new episodes than as opposed to now. Fantastic orchestra theme, many memorable characters. There’s a lot of good for this show, but not too surprised it came in at the top spot for that iconic status alone.

There’s the list, a lot of weird omissions to go by that’s for sure. The biggest probably being Dragon Ball Z in the anime field of things. A lack of more superhero shows. No X-men, nor Batman to be found. No Ghostbusters was a bit of a surprise. Another big surprise would be no Jetsons. Now yes its taking Flintstones in space, but it was still successful enough to be worth a mention. A lot of british animation i’m not familiar with, and the ones that I was I could see being there, but rankings of those could swapped in ways. Giving Looney Tunes one-tenth of the entire countdown was unnecessary. They really explain why movies were included as the title would make you believe strictly cartoon shows right? There's that weird remembrance of a oddly constructed list. See you next time.
