The Contenders: Page 10

181 Ayn Rand

Really? She doesn't feature in the top ten. She can construct some strong characters who will never weather. She herself was a great philosopher and strong willed woman. Atlas Shrugged is one of the best books written ever.

Her philosophy has its critics - but no one can deny that she has written some masterpieces - Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead are classics in their own rights.

If more people read her books, she would have been number one.

Simple-minded hypocrite who has corrupted many other simple minds.

182 Gary K. Wolf

A lot of people don't know that Who Framed Roger Rabbit was based on a comic noir novel called Who Censored Roger Rabbit. Fair enough I'm not sure Gary K. Wolf wrote it with Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse in mind.

184 Tom Clancy

I think Clancy has too many three-syllable words in his books for the people who vote here.

185 Virginia Woolf Virginia Woolf Adeline Virginia Woolf, born Stephen (25 January 1882 – 28 March 1941), known professionally as Virginia Woolf, was an English writer and one of the foremost modernists of the 20th century.

It is an offense against nature to have Roth, Brown, and Paolini in the top fifty but not to have Woolf on the list at all. Mrs Dalloway is a masterpiece of modernist fiction.

Why is she so low? How can she be lower than Paulo Coelho, Dan Brown and Steven Tyler? She deserves to be at least in the top 100, it's contra natura that the author of Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The waves... This is the definition of malum in se.

Best Childrens author ever

190 Margaret Atwood
191 J.G. Ballard

Mr. Ballard touched science fiction... perverted it into some new and bizarre creature that is on par, intellectually, with literary fiction. There are a lot of authors who are responsible for turning the science fiction ghetto into something that could be taken seriously as an art form: Vonnegut, Ellison, Dick, etc. but I believe that Ballard has done it best. - airbb

193 David Gemmell
194 Chinua Achebe

He's the best existential writer. Period.

How can you miss out on this nobel winning literary genius! Siddartha, Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, Demian! Each book is a masterpiece itself! He deserves to be in top 20 at least!
