Top Ten Short Stories

The Top Ten
1 The Raven (Edgar Allen Poe)

Sophisticated, thrilling, slightly creepy, and just a darn good read. It is written in beautiful form and no one who has read it can say it isn't a masterpiece.

Do poems even count as short stories? If they do The Raven definitely deserves first.

2 The Call of Cthulhu (H.P Lovecraft)

Very scary, touches the soul within and the heart and leaves you chilled, obviously a Masterpiece, and I think At mountains of Madness should be on this list too.

3 Harrison Bergeron (Kurt Vonnegut )
4 The Most Dangerous Game (Richard Connell)

Unbelievably suspenseful and just pure badass

5 The Monkeys Paw (W.W. Jacobs)
6 A Christmas Carol (Charles Dickens)

'I have none to give, ' the Ghost replied. 'It comes from other regions, Ebenezer Scrooge '

Popular and influential. The story spawned thousand similar ones.

Great educational, as moral meaning.
That is good for every time and everywhere.
I advise everyone to read it

7 All Summer in a Day (Ray Bradbury)
8 The Landlady (Roald Dahl)
9 Metamorphosis (Kafka)

Tragicomedy at its best. Open to endless interpretation. As universal as it is personal. Its relevance shall echo through the ages.

10 Sredni Vashtar (Saki)

A wonderful discovery. Laugh out loud stuff.

The Contenders
11 The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (James Thurber)
12 The Cask of Amontillado (Edgar Allen Poe)

Oh how I love this story. Probably my favorite short story ever written. The mood is creepy, the dialouge is unnerving and highly entertaining, and the two characters are just... They're great. This is a great work of art and you should read it, especially if you're a Poe fan.

One of the best Edgar Allen Poe stories.

Cute story about a little boy in kindergarden who tells his parents about all the naughty things he does at school, but, tricks them into thinking that another little boy is doing it.

Laugh out loud antics of Reginald. There are about 30 short stories about Reginald. Enjoy and laugh out loud.

It turned into my favorite movie "Stand By Me (1986)". I haven't read it yet, but I'm going to soon. By just seeing the movie I'm still voting for this.
