Chris Chelios is undoubtedly the greatest American born player to ever play the game of hockey so Illinois obviously deserves a place in the top 5. Even without a D1 team, Illinois is always one of the top NHL and D1 producing states and ever sense the Blackhawks have become a dynasty, they will continue to get better and better. Not to mention that Illinois is Brett Hull's home state

The Chicago Mission along with CYA, Fury and TI are all fantastic elite hockey programs with the Mission constantly sending players on to D1
