I think Sid was more misunderstood than evil. I think this was because he was a lonely kid with no friends, an overactive imagination, and not much of a home life. And you know he had terrible parents. Honestly, what kind of parents allow their kid to blow things up in the back yard? It's also been theorized that Sid may have had a drunkard and abusive father. And he does give up his mutilation of toys after finding out they're alive, which he had no way of knowing at first. I don't think Sid was really as bad as he seemed and probably has a lighter side to him.

Sid is clearly terrified and believes this completely. But this is very effective.

This is after he blows up a Combat Carl with an m-80 in his backyard.
