Top Ten U.S. States With the Worst Traffic Conditions

Whether it's because of bad drivers in the state or just really congested jams on the roadways.
The Top Ten
1 California California is a state in the Southwestern United States. With 39.6 million residents across a total area of about 163,696 square miles (423,970 square kilometers), California is the most populous U.S. state and the third-largest by area. The state capital is Sacramento, and the largest city is Los Angeles.

I've visited this state three times, and if someone was on the road, there was a ninety-five percent chance that they were a maniac. My experience of Californian traffic is not as dense as the traffic in the British capital, believe me, but even there it's easier to get from place to place more safely.

I remember driving home fron LA with my parents, and there was TONS of traffic. No wonder this state has some of the worst traffic since it's the most popular.

Los Angeles is literally a nightmare in traffic. I went on a trip once from South Lake Tahoe, and I've had to wait in traffic for about three hours to get back home on the highway. Orange County is also a disaster.

Most populous state, gets the worst traffic because of the density. I know it's a big state but come on.

2 New Jersey New Jersey is a state in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. It is bordered on the north and east by New York, on the southeast and south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Pennsylvania, and on the southwest by Delaware.

Bad state, bad roads, bad traffic, bad cars, worst drivers, worst police, worst DMV, worst fines, worst taxes to pay for it all and the very worst corrupt and dangerous state government in the world. Leave and save yourselves and children.

North Jersey traffic is terrible. North Jersey has proximity to NYC, so that's why many people overpopulated the northern part of Jersey. NYC traffic is the worst and most dangerous traffic I have experienced. Every road is congested in Jersey and crowded especially in the summer.

3 New York New York is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic Region. New York was one of the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States. With an estimated 19.54 million residents in 2018, it is the fourth most populous state. In order to distinguish the state from the city with the same name, it is sometimes referred to as New York State.

If you go to NYC directly, you're better off walking instead of taking a cab. It's always slow there.

Actually your better taking a cab

Dumbest drivers

4 Florida Florida is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. Florida is the southeasternmost U.S. state, with the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other.

Guess what? I'm back in Orlando for my summer vacation, and guess what, it's STILL the same congested craziness! Worst is how every single traffic light seems to always catch us. You can barely head around Orlando/Kissimmee area because of this. Also we passed through both downtown Jacksonville and downtown Orlando and the way the metropolitan areas are around here really gave me a headache.

I've been in Broward county since 1974. I am leaving soon. Too much traffic for me! Too crowded here. I like less crowded places and small towns so this is not for me, but apparently tons of people are willing to put up with it to enjoy the weather.

I-95 is a disaster most of the time in this state. This is true especially with all the traffic going to/from Disney/Universal in Orlando. Miami is pretty bad as well.

5 Georgia Georgia is a state located in the southeastern United States. It was established in 1732, the last of the original Thirteen Colonies.

I live in Georgia and I like the roads. Georgia has some of the best roads, but you will be enjoying those roads while being stuck in traffic.

One word Atlanta

6 Maryland Maryland is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Washington, D.C.

Well, at least is not as bad as New York or Massachusetts.

Like Northern Virginia, Maryland's traffic really sucks around the DC area.

Marylanders live for slowing down the left lane and cutting people off

7 Massachusetts Massachusetts, officially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is the most populous state in the New England part of the northeastern region of the United States.

I-90, I-93, and I-95 in Massachusetts are terrible. And so is Massachusetts!

Traffic always stopped when trying to commute home from work.

Horrible Traffic, plan 1-2hrs for 20 miles during commute times

8 Illinois Illinois is a state in the midwestern region of the United States. It is the 5th most populous state and 25th largest state in terms of land area, and is often noted as a microcosm of the entire country.

Where do I start... Oh yeah they drive 25mph over the speed limit on highways, they flood up in too our state (Wisconsin) and think they can do whatever they want

To be fair, they have only one really congested city, everything else is a little more fluid in traffic.

9 Texas Texas is a state in the Southern USA. It is the second largest by area and population. Its largest city is Houston.

Several big cities here, usually with tons of drivers.

10 Virginia Virginia, officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States.

Tried to take the highway, was congested. Turned and tried to take the tunnel instead, closed. Tried to take the bridge, Stuck behind working vehicles going slower than a light jogger on the side path... Don't even get me started with NOVA...

I've lived here my entire life and it sucks. Traffic at the beach is atrocious especially during tourist season. Worst of all would have to be up in the DC beltway area, near Tyson's Corner or wherever. I really hate the traffic in Northern Virginia!

The roads are constantly backed up in northern Virginia, it's honestly a normal, everyday situation. Unless you have an E-ZPass, don't even bother driving on I-95, I-395, or I-495.

Driven in 43/50 states in America. Every time I come through Virginia, I remember what real pain is

The Contenders
11 Hawaii Hawaii is the 50th and most recent state of the United States of America, receiving statehood on August 21, 1959.

Grid lock is terrible during rush hours

12 Colorado Colorado is a state in the United States encompassing most of the Southern Rocky Mountains as well as the northeastern portion of the Colorado Plateau and the western edge of the Great Plains.

Colorado Springs

13 Minnesota Minnesota is a state in the Midwestern United States. Minnesota was admitted as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858, created from the eastern half of the Minnesota Territory.
14 Pennsylvania Pennsylvania, officially the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is a state located in the northern and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.

Traffic in Pennsylvania beats out traffic and surrounding states by a mile. With its antiquated highway system small streets an over abundance of drivers makes for a recipe for disaster. They say the construction cone is the state flower of Pennsylvania as every road and highway in and around Philadelphia and surrounding counties are constantly under construction, With exception of fixing there millions of potholes. A normal 15 minute trip to the store could be an hour or longer. Best bet is to find a different route through New Jersey

15 North Carolina North Carolina is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. The state borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
16 Ohio Ohio is a state in the midwestern region of the United States. Ohio is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States.

18 Connecticut
19 Nevada Nevada is a state in the Western, Mountain West, and Southwestern regions of the United States of America.
20 Washington Washington is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States located north of Oregon, west of Idaho, and south of the Canadian province of British Columbia on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is the only state named after a president.
21 Michigan
22 South Carolina South Carolina is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. The state is bordered to the north by North Carolina, to the south and west by Georgia across the Savannah River, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.
23 Alabama Alabama is a state located in the southeastern region of the United States. It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and Mississippi to the west.
24 Wyoming Wyoming is a state in the mountain region of the Western United States. The state is the tenth largest by area, but the least populous and the second least densely populated of the 50 United States.

It takes forever to get from one place to the other.
