Top 10 Ugly-Looking but Well-Written Animated Series

The Top Ten
1 South Park South Park is an American adult animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for the Comedy Central television network. The show is about four boys, who are Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick, and their adventures in South Park, Colorado.

The 2000s era of this show was very truly some of the greatest satire to ever grace television, presented by characters who were literal paper cutouts produced in deliberately the cheapest and crudest way possible

I don't find it ugly personally, it's unique and the animations look very good. In the first seasons it was rough-looking, but nowadays it looks fantastic.

The cutout animation style actually really fits South Park like a glove. I couldn't picture the show looking any other way.

This is the best and I think this is the fastest animation I ever seen like 6 day's

2 Ed, Edd n Eddy Ed, Edd n Eddy is a Canadian-American animated comedy television series created by Danny Antonucci for Cartoon Network, and the sixth of the network's Cartoon Cartoons. The series revolves around three preteen boys: Ed, Edd "Double D," and Eddy—collectively known as "the Eds"—who live in a suburban cul-de-sac in the fictional town of Peach Creek. Under the unofficial leadership of Eddy, the trio frequently invent schemes to make money from their peers to purchase their favorite confectionery, jawbreakers. Their plans usually fail, leaving them in various, often humiliating, predicaments. Adult cartoonist Antonucci was dared to create a children's cartoon; while designing a commercial, he ...read more.

Eh, I can see where they are coming from, but the shaky lines on characters isn't amature, it's supposed to be that way literally. The first season lacks color and what colors it does have are washed out, but as usual, as the series goes on, the animation becomes more clear and much more colorful. The show on the other hand I won't get into because I could and have gone on an entire rant on how great the show is!

Honestly, the boiling outlines really made Ed, Edd n Eddy stand out in terms of art style in comparison to other Cartoon Network originals at the time. The characters may look ugly to an extent, but you got to give credit to its slapstick humor along with its incredibly diverse and creative sound effects library that's become so famous that it's a widespread Internet meme for YouTube videos now.

As rebeltaxi states, the producers are proud of their imperfection

Noticing a trend here?

3 Rick & Morty Rick and Morty is an American adult animated science fiction sitcom created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon for Adult Swim.

Arguably makes even Family Guy look good graphic-wise

Also quite arguably makes even South Park look like a miserable joke writing-wise

Rick and morty becomes a lot less funny when you rewatch the old episodes.

Yeah the art style is ugly but the show is great.

We already have Rick and Morty on here, dummy.

4 Chowder Chowder is an American animated television series created by C.H. Greenblatt for Cartoon Network. The series follows an aspiring young child named Chowder and his day-to-day adventures as an apprentice in Chef Mung Daal's catering company.

The colours are the only bad thing about chowder.

5 Clone High

Nah. This show sucks. Even though it was created by Phil Lord and Chris Miller

"If Total Drama went full-on self-aware"

6 Rocko's Modern Life Rocko's Modern Life is an American animated television series created by Joe Murray for Nickelodeon. The series centers on the surreal life of an anthropomorphic Australian-immigrant wallaby named Rocko as well as his friends: the gluttonous steer Heffer, the neurotic turtle Filburt, and Rocko's faithful dog Spunky.

Overrated, overwrought, overdone in its art style and RIDICULOUSLY over-reliant on sex/sight gags, yes, but the sheer level and especially audacity of social satire presented in this show is quite honestly unlike any other (technically) non-adult cartoon ever made (yes, you heard me; there is, in fact, a MUCH larger diversity between this and The Ren & Stimpy Show than it initially lets on)

That was a hoot!

7 Rugrats Rugrats is an American animated television series created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó and Paul Germain for Nickelodeon.

Another show that isn't particularly intelligent but still qualifies for this list due to how realistically it portrays the family depicted in it (cough, besides Angelica, cough)

I never saw the art style as ugly, I think it's pretty nifty. Awesome show too, still love it as an adult as much as I did as a kid. - SailorSedna

Disagree with it being well-written?
Er this show is for kids around the ages of 4-10.

I honestly disagree with this one being well written.

8 Adventure Time Adventure Time is an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network. The series follows the adventures of a boy named Finn (voiced by Jeremy Shada) and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake (voiced by John DiMaggio)—a dog with the magical power to change shape and size at will. Throughout the show, they interact with the other main characters Princess Bubblegum (voiced by Hynden Walch), the Ice King (voiced by Tom Kenny), and Marceline the Vampire Queen (voiced by Olivia Olson). Deny it all you want, but this and Regular Show were the only things keeping Cartoon Network alive during the early 2010s for good reason

In this show's case, it featured story arcs big enough to actually give even ANIME a run for its money at times

I love the art style of Adventure Time. It spawned a lot of copycats, however...

Adventure Time's art style was adorable. I even used to draw in its style

I lost interest in this show after a while

9 Fairly Odd Parents The Fairly OddParents is an American animated television series created by Butch Hartman for Nickelodeon.

I actually like how it looks. It doesn't look ugly to me.

Vicky is the only ugly one.

10 Crayon Shin-chan Originally debuting in Japan in 1992, this anime series is an adaptation of a manga created by Yoshito Usui. The show humorously depicts the life of a cheeky boy named Shin-chan and his interactions with those around him. Notable for its satire and societal critique, the series has garnered a diverse audience.

Butt humor is well written? I never knew

11 Apple & Onion

this show sucks either way

12 Courage the Cowardly Dog Courage the Cowardly Dog is an American animated horror comedy television series created by John R. Dilworth for Cartoon Network as part of the network's Cartoon Cartoons block.

Nothing wrong with the animation.

14 Beavis and Butt-head Beavis and Butt-Head is an American animated sitcom created and designed by Mike Judge. The series originated from Frog Baseball, a 1992 short film by Judge originally aired on Liquid Television.

Not that B&BH ever actually do say anything even remotely intelligent (for the most part), but the way that they talk to each other is just so eerily realistic that it's downright uncanny (yes, I know that was redundant)

Just over-exaggerated immature teenagers.

15 The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius is an American computer animated television series created by John A. Davis. It is the first spin-off to the 2001 film Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius.

Ugly CGI? Holy hell, yes, even though it actually looked quite impressive for its time when compared to Reboot

Dung heap? Compared to shows like Rocko and Invader Zim, yes, but on its own merits...hey, that's pretty GOOD

Come on its early CGI its only after the 90s. Some people confuse it as a 90s cartoon because it came not long after. Please remember you are on a computer and you know what the C stands for in CGI

I really don't like the extremely gross, uncanny animation that this show has

The CGI to me isn't ugly but more dated. Still, animation doesn't make a great show. - SailorSedna

16 Hey Arnold Hey Arnold! is an American animated television series created by Craig Bartlett that aired on Nickelodeon from October 7, 1996 to June 8, 2004. The show centers on a fourth grader named Arnold, who lives with his grandparents in an inner-city boarding house.

19 Bob's Burgers Bob's Burgers is an American animated sitcom created by Loren Bouchard for The Fox Broadcasting Company. It premiered on January 9, 2011 and is still running as of 2022.

Good animation.
Stupid comedy but its from America and they can be weak with it.

Well, it's so much better than crappy Family Guy or plagiarised American Dad.

20 BoJack Horseman BoJack Horseman is an American adult animated sitcom created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg. The series stars Will Arnett as the title character, BoJack Horseman.

The art style is strange and the concept sounds stupid. But it's by far the greatest cartoon show I have ever seen. It's so so realistic that it's depressing and it's a very intelligent way of trope deconstruction. It perfectly shows the characteristics of depression and that real life isn't a sitcom where all problems are solved at the and of the episode

This is a great show, and I thought I would hate it due to the dumb concept, but no, I really like it.

Don’t let the cute animals and bright colors fool you this is one of the most realist, heart-wrenching cartoons out there

Best cartoon on Netflix

This show the rating is amazing It's the funniest most engaging most everything Show on Netflix Netflix will never make an original series better than this

This show is not well-written. It's just garbage.

I guess someone should replace the picture.

25 Reboot

Speaking of ugly CGI, here's a show that'll REALLY take you back to the past (even though it was made in like the mid-1990s)

Even if this show is well written, I really can't get past the animation that borders on sickening.
