Most Underrated Metal Ballads

The Top Ten

1 Return to Serenity - Testament Return to Serenity - Testament

Overall I find this an underrated song, but at the same time this is the least underrated Testament ballad out of the five (The Ballad, The Legacy, Return to Serenity, Trail of Tears, Cold Embrace) - Alkadikce

2 The Unforgiven - Metallica The Unforgiven - Metallica

It's in the shadow of Nothing Else Matters and Fade To Black, but overall this is a very well known song and I wouldn't call it underrated. - Metal_Treasure

3 Fiddler On the Green - Demons and Wizards

A very beautiful and sad ballad. Great vocal performance giving chills (Hansi Kürsch).

Real story behind the lyrics: the singer & lyricist saw two car accidents in one week and two kids were killed - a boy and a girl.

In the song this story goes like that: Death took the life of the boy by mistake and to make up for it, the reaper also took the life of the girl, who his soulmate would have been in life. The reaper talks to the girl: "Would you mind if take you? "... - Metal_Treasure

4 The Bard's Song (In the Forest) - Blind Guardian

This ballad has several official audio versions but the best one is on the official video. - Metal_Treasure

One of the best songs ever written and performed.

Blind Guardian fans appreciate the song but outside this fanbase it is practically obscure. This ballad is so damn good that every metalhead deserves to hear it.

5 Dreaming (Tell Me) - Yngwie

Classy, exquisite ballad. Great guitars and vox, too (Joe Lynn Turner). - Metal_Treasure

6 Rainbow Eyes - Rainbow

Maybe this is the most nostalgic ballad for a gorgeus and underrated band.

7 Diabolus - Primal Fear

Magnificent start to finish - 8 min eargasm ... - Metal_Treasure

8 Beyond the Realms of Death - Judas Priest

The first ever metal ballad

9 Love's Tragedy Asunder - Demons And Wizards

Fantastic, but quite morbid

This is a love song but it's really very dark - it's about a man whose wife is terminally ill, and he assists her suicide, and ends up killing himself.

A breathtaking vocal performance by the incredible Hansi Kürsch - emotive, expressive and divine tone. It's difficult to write and perform a love ballad without sounding cheesy. Yet, this song proves it's possible. Nothing's fake here and I believe every single word/note (credits to Jon Schaffer and Hansi Kürsch). - Metal_Treasure

10 Fortuneteller - Deep Purple

A hidden gem - released way after their peak, this beautiful song remained unnoticed. - Metal_Treasure

The Contenders

11 A Tout Le Monde - Megadeth

An underrated Megadeth ballad would be Promises or 13. - Alkadikce

I don't think it's underrated. Every metal fan knows this song. And it's #4 on the list of best metal ballads (Top Tens). How is this underrated? - Metal_Treasure

Love this song. Especially the original version. - IronSabbathPriest

Not really underrated - 1) usually appears in the top 5 metal ballads; 2) every metalhead has heard of it. - Metal_Treasure

12 Child In Time - Deep Purple

Wait this song is a ballad? It’s not underrated though. - Userguy44

See the blind man...

13 Ghost Of Freedom - Iced Earth

One of the most beautiful and powerful ballads but very underrated. - Metal_Treasure

14 Snuff - Slipknot

Not really underrated - usually appears in the top 10 ballads (metal and non-metal lists). It's #8 on the list of best metal ballads (Top Tens) and also here #8 most underrated. This is plain ridiculous. - Metal_Treasure

15 Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Metallica
16 How the Gods Kill - Danzig

Chills all the way.

17 Changes - Black Sabbath
18 Love Me Forever - Motorhead

Motorhead are not a metal band. Listen to Lemmy - he says the same: not metal. - Metal_Treasure

19 Summer's Rain - Savatage
20 Prisoner of Your Eyes - Judas Priest
21 Soldier of Fortune - Deep Purple
22 Mistreated - Deep Purple
23 Teräksen Taakka - Teräsbetoni

This song is so epic!

If somebody wanna venture beyond the conventional ballads in EN, this would be a great start (in Finnish).
I don't understand a single word but the vocals are so amazing that I don't need lyrics to get the mood (Jarkko Ahola is an awesome young singer).
Teräksen Taakka = Burden of Steel, but even without translation you will get that heavy feel because the singer perfectly communicates the message of the song. - Metal_Treasure

24 Angel - Judas Priest
25 Cemetery Gates - Pantera

It's strange that some of the most popular ballads also appear on the list of underrated ballads. This way songs that are really underrated are underrated even on the list of the underrated songs...
Cemetery Gates is #5 on the list of best metal ballads (Top Tens) and here again #5 most underrated... There is something wrong with this list.

A Tout Le Monde, The Unforgiven, Snuff and Cemetery Gates are NOT underrated and shouldn't be on this list, let alone Top 5 (if you know the meaning of underrated; If you don't - just scroll down and you will see awesome ballads you've never heard of). - Metal_Treasure

26 The Temple of the King - Rainbow

27 Thorn - Blind Guardian

Maybe it's heavier than a usual ballad. This song is very emotional. Indescribable, passionate, amazing vocals (of course, Hansi Kürsch never fails).

Great mix of acoustic and electric guitars. - Metal_Treasure

28 Ohne Dich - Rammstein
29 Sinner - Theocracy
30 A Tale That Wasn't Right - Helloween

Michael Kiske - perfect crystal voice. The song is a bit cheesy to my taste but I mostly enjoy the vocals. - Metal_Treasure

31 Catch the Rainbow - Rainbow

One of my all time favourites. - Userguy44

32 Handful of Rain - Savatage

Underrated band, underrated ballad.

33 My Last Sunrise - Demons and Wizards

One of the most emotive metal ballads and one of the greatest vocal performances in metal.
There's only one metal ballad that moves me so much - Beyond the Realms of Death by Judas Priest. - Metal_Treasure

Unbelievable vocals! Hands down.

34 Love Conquers All - Deep Purple
35 Love’s no friend - Rainbow
36 Greater Darkness - Moonspell
37 Our Loved Ones - Volbeat
38 Strange World - Iron Maiden
39 The Man - Primal Fear

Great music and lyrics with deep meaning, and one of the best vocal performances in metal. - Metal_Treasure

40 Uudestisyntynyt - Teräsbetoni

Another beautiful and sad ballad in Finnish by Jarkko Ahola. His voice is just divine - powerful and emotional. I hope one day he will get the credits he deserves. - Metal_Treasure

Another beautiful and powerful ballad; Jarkko Ahola - flawless vox again. - Metal_Treasure

I added this. This song takes you to a whole 'nother world and I loved it so much I couldn't stop listening to it. - NuMetalManiak
