Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction Album Review

Countdown to Extinction. The follow up album to Megadeth's famous album, Rust in Peace. Which is often considered by many to be the greatest metal album of all time.

And this is a great follow up. It's their most commercially successful. While Rust in Peace was much more speed oriented, this album I feel focuses more on lyrics. With songs such as "Sweating Bullets" being about schizophrenia.

And there's stuff on this album that you wouldn't expect from a thrash band. The title track is actually about animal rights. And Architecture of Agression being anti war themed.

Another thing I noticed on this album was the songwriting. On previous Megadeth releases, the content had been primarily written by Mustaine. With occasional help from bassist David Ellefson. This album features writing from all four band members, and each of them has a chance to shine.

The solos and riffing on "Symphony of Destruction" is just badass. Megadeth still made way for their classic guitar sound. The songs with the best lyrics are "Sweating Bullets" and "Countdown to Extinction."

The only song I don't really like is "Psychotron" because it seems a bit forced. Plus, their is a better version of this song. And that is Angry Again.

The version of this album that I own is the 20th anniversary edition. With the original album on one disc, and a live album on the other. The live album is amazing as well!

Overall, I would rate this album 9.5/10. Definitely buy this album, you won't regret it.

Psychotron is a good song, not Symphony of Destruction. Get it right. - visitor

Symphony Of Destruction is, in my opinion, the best Megadeth song. I love Megadeth and Metallica equally. The only thing I disagree with is that Psychotron isn’t good, it’s my third favorite from the album. - visitor
