As far as standard role-playing games go, this might officially be THE deepest storyline of the genre.
The art style and animation are absolutely jaw-droppingly executed for the time as well, and Xenoblade would not have existed without this
Classic Resident Evil meets Classic Silent Hill, and in the absolute best (albeit clunkiest) way possible
Mario meets Devil May Cry meets Tetris Attack, with a hearty swig of Professor Layton
Parappa The Rapper meets Guitar Hero meets Rocko's Modern Life (unlike PTR, by the way, this game was one of the ACTUAL inventors and precursors of Guitar Hero)

What Parappa 2 should have been, honestly.
I haven't played it myself, but if the fact that this game is basically Um Jammer Lammy IN SPACE ARMOR and with massively improved gameplay mechanics doesn't immediately scream "awesome" to you, you've clearly never played or even seen UJL yourself, and I feel bad for you
And now for a game that actually CAN be described as having a story as deep as multiple Mariana Trenches stacked on top of each other; Undertale, eat your little red heart out
Personally, I've played far better examples of this genre in terms of gameplay myself (Metroidvania and Cave Story immediately come to mind), but this is yet another game on this list that is easily worth playing for the story alone, which is especially shocking coming from a Mario game of all things
