Top Ten Unexpected Smash Bros. Ultimate Newcomers

The Top Ten
1 Piranha Plant The Piranha Plant, known as the Pakkun Flower in Japan, is a plant species from the Mario franchise which usually appears as a leafy green stalk topped with a white-spotted red or green globe, with a maw lined with sharp teeth reminiscent of piranhas.

The next one could be Koopa Troopa. Moveset:
Neutral Special: Boomerang Throw (Super Mario Bros 3)
Side Special: Shell Slide (Super Mario Bros)
Recovery: Winged Jump x3 (Super Mario Bros)
Down Special: Shell Ground Pound Combo (New Super Mario Bros)
Final Smash: Blue Shell (Mario Kart 64)

It must really suck for all the Waluigi fans out there, Waluigi being snubbed by both Daisy and Piranha Plant as newcomers to Smash Ultimat.

I bet the next character is going to be a Goomba. I already have a move set for Goomba.
B: Thorn Spit (Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars)

<B>: Bat Swing (Mario Baseball series)

Up B: Paragoomba Flight

Down B: Goomba Shoe

Final Smash: Goomboss

Waluigi: wahhht! You got Pirahna plant in smash but not me!? *explodes from anger*

2 Richter Belmont
3 Joker
4 Ridley Ridley is a villain from the Metroid series and a character from the Super Smash Bros. series. He's Samus Aran's archenemy and has been fighting her since day one with the first Metroid game in 1986. When Samus was three years old, Ridley murdered her parents in front of her. He is a member of the Space Pirates and works for Mother Brain.

Too big? Not today!

5 Simon Belmont

Became a little less unexpected when it was confirmed Snake was returning, since obviously Konami wouldn't be an issue.

6 Daisy Princess Daisy is a fictional character in the Mario series of video games, in which she is the princess of the fictional region of Sarasaland.

When Rosalina appeared in Wii U/3DS instead of her, I thought Daisy's fate as Smash character was sealed. Then hey actually made her a Peach clone instead of a Peach color scheme.

7 Chrom

You'd think the new "Fire Emblem" character for Ultimate would have been someone from "Shadows of Valentina", the latest in the series when Smash Ultimate was in development. But it was this guy, who incidentally is still involved in Robin's Final Smash.

8 Incineroar Incineroar, known in Japan as Gaogaen, is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise.
9 Terry Bogard - Fatal Fury Terry Bogard is a video game character created by SNK who is the protagonist of the Fatal Fury series.

Let's be honest: when most people heard "SNK character", their minds went to "Attack on Titan" ("Shingeki no Kyojin" in Japan, thus often called SnK by people in any country) and were thinking that Eren Yager guy or whoever else from that show.

Even when the SNK copyright leak happened, I wasn't expecting him specifically. I thought it was gonna be Athena Asamiya (who ended up a Spirit instead).

I expected this guy as all the leaks pointed out to him. I wasn't that excited about him as I knew he was coming

I was not expecting any SNK in Smash to be honest. Before September 2019, of course.

10 Banjo-Kazooie

Yes, there was demand for them... in the Melee era. By the time of Smash 4, they'd pretty much been just a footnote in game history.

Everyone was convinced Minecraft Steve would be the Microsoft representative

Why wouldn't Microsoft pick a character actually important now?

The Contenders
11 Ken Masters Ken Masters, originally spelled in Japanese as 拳, is a fictional character in Capcom's Street Fighter series.
12 Dark Samus

Wasn't expecting an outright clone

13 Sans Sans or Sans the Skeleton is a character in the 2015 RPG Undertale created by Toby Fox. He is a lazy, pun-loving skeleton who is a supporting protagonist in the "pacifist" and "neutral" routes of Undertale, and a heroic antagonist/final boss of the "genocide" route. He is known for his incredibly difficult boss fight, bad puns, and the phrases "geeetttt dunked on!!!" and "you're gonna have a bad time." He is also named after the font "comic sans." Known for also being Ness from the Mother series. (known as Earthbound in Western territories.)

Not really a newcomer, but a costume for your mii

14 Byleth (Fire Emblem)

Nobody expected another "Fire Emblem" character. I'd add nobody expected the female version to make it in even as a palette swap a la Robin due to the "Smash is for good boys and girls of all ages" thing, but of course by that logic Bayonetta should have been cut.

15 Hero (Dragon Quest)
16 Isabelle (Animal Crossing) Isabelle is a character from the "Animal Crossing" series. She first appeared in "Animal Crossing: New Leaf". In the game, she assists the player with their duties as mayor. As a dog, Isabelle is a friendly and helpful companion to the player throughout their mayoral journey.

Cute little Isabelle was even less expected to become a fighter than Villager, and for the same reasons.

17 Cuphead Cuphead is the titular main protagonist of the indie run and gun video game, Cuphead. Cuphead is Mugman's irresponsible older twin brother and, like the rest of his family, lives on Inkwell Isle. He is usually played by the first player and, as a result, was the default character for Player One before the update in April 2019, after which the first player can choose whether to play as him or Mugman.

Mii costume, but if Sans can be on this list...

18 Altair (Assassin's Creed)

See: Sans and Cuphead

19 Min Min

We knew someone from ARMS would kick off Fighters Pass 2, but everyone was expecting Spring Man or Ribbon Girl. Or for Nintendo to pull a Koopalings/Hero(es) and have all the ARMS cast in one character slot.

20 Steve

Not just unexpected, but caused the biggest rift in the Smash fandom since Bayonetta

21 Sephiroth Sephiroth is a fictional character and main antagonist in the role-playing video game Final Fantasy VII developed by Square.
22 Sora
