Top Ten Verses in the Gospel of Matthew

Matthew is my favourite book of the Bible. I find it gives the most simple, but productive, view from Jesus. There are many great scriptures in this Gospel, as is only logical since the God of this world speaks His wisdom in it. Of all the amazing and wise verses in Matthew, which is your favourite?

NOTE: I'm using the English Standard Version (ESV) translation.
The Top Ten
1 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. - Matthew 6:33

This is my favourite verse in the whole Bible. It's very encouraging to me to know that if I follow Him first, everything else will fall into place. It's quite easy to forget this verse when painful times arise, but we must not! We must keep our eyes constantly trained on God and His incredible word!

2 So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. - Matthew 7:12

This really says everything. It's so simple, and so perfect. If we can constantly have this verse going through our heads, we will do a lot more good! Just try and remember this amazing verse.

3 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, - Matthew 5:44

This is not only a great commandment we all must follow, but it also shows to us that God loves everyone, even His enemies. He's also not talking about Satan, He's talking about our human enemies. So don't get mixed up with that. And then the latter of what Jesus says here is really showing the passion we must have for our enemies to succeed. We must pray for everyone, even the ones we call our enemies.

A part of my prayers every night is for Jesus to bless all those who do the wrong things to me.

4 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye. - Matthew 7:5

I love how Jesus just calls out our stupidity so plainly! This analogy is so genius; quite often we see something wrong that other people are doing, when we're doing the exact same thing but even to a worse extent. We must first get rid of our sin before we help others get rid of theirs. Also, take note that He's indicating to help others once you've taken the log out of your own eye.

5 Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. - Matthew 7:21

Keep note of this verse guys. Just because we say we follow Him, doesn't mean we're going to Heaven. He's warning us, we've got to do the will of God! If we do His will, then we'll go to Heaven. But until you're doing that, you need to keep working on it.

6 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. - Matthew 24:13

Do not give up! So often it feels like the easiest way, but that's not true! We must fight the good fight, we must endure to the end. This verse is worth memorizing, they all are, but this one especially.

7 Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. - Matthew 6:1

This verse is brilliant. Basically, if we practice our righteousness to be seen by others, we will have no reward; so as long as we're not practicing our righteousness to be seem by others, we will get our reward! Beware of pride, it's the root of all sin.

8 Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. - Matthew 7:15

The wolves are everywhere! Satan is the biggest one. This verse is just Jesus shining light on the deception of the devil. It's amazing! You truly can never trust a stranger, a sad as that sounds, it's true. There's just too many false prophets. Be aware my friends.

9 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith. - Matthew 21:22

All we need to be prayer warriors is faith! The first things I prayed for when I started following Jesus, was faith and motivation. Once we have the faith, we're all set! Focus on trusting in Jesus! He'll take care of the rest!

10 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! - Matthew 7:11

Here He shows us how stupid our unfaith is. I love it! If we, who are sinful know how to give, how much more will Jesus, who loves us beyond comprehension, give us what we Pray to Him for! Of course, quite often our will isn't His will, and then we will get mad, "Why didn't He answer my prayer? " Boo hoo. When you're not seeing the big picture, which is that God is doing what's best for you.
